They pray to them and shit like that, and hold meetings with mediums to communicate with them and pray to them to do things for them. When I told her that is, quite literally, blasphemous and heretical, and against all teachings of the Church, and that they're all going to burn in Hell, she simply replied that "that's our culture" and shit like that.
Another example. My girlfriend's cousin has some mental problems. She was really depressed for a while or something. So her family took her to see "el Hombre" (the Man), which is the local slang down there for the Devil. Basically they go to this place in the middle of the woods and pray to the Devil to fix things in their life. In return, they "sell their soul" to him. Most of them do it asking for things like help winning over a girl, or money or popularity and shit.
What's worse is they don't seem to understand how this is completely incompatible with Christianity. I told my girlfriend that her cousin is going to Hell for all eternity, but she claims she isn't. She says that "it's not like she asked for money or something so God won't mind." I tried asking her what the fuck she thinks "selling your soul to the Devil" does and she said it doesn't really mean anything.
This is how many, many South Americans view religion. The vast majority don't give a shit about Spirit Cooking because they do shit like that in their home countries all the time.
Next time a Catholic tries saying the RCC is the most popular church, point out that 50% of its followers are literally still pagans.
