Well, just finished up the second trade of New Super-Man. I'm loving it so far, though I think they did a disservice to Lex's character. He was a bit too dumb.
Anyway, I only bought this because of y'all's recommendations, so we may as well have a thread. Also, where can I read about the Great Ten? I know nothing of them.
They had a mini, IDK about it quality wise since I haven't read it.
Jonathan Thomas
Fair enough. I'll look into it.
Asher Bailey
JLC may be coming, given the title comment.
Bentley Torres
Neat! Baixi and Wonder-Woman are better characters than Kenan anyway.
Michael Young
Robinbot please
Brayden Flores
The Great Ten had their own 9 issue mini a little while back, they also appeared and played an important role in 52 along with the subsequent Checkmate Storylines all pre Flashpoint.
Nathan Davis
Reading stuff before Rebirth tends to confuse me, but that is to be expected.
Parker Watson
>Not liking the successor to Superbro, the Chinese Superchad
Gay
Isaac Lee
>mportant role in 52 They barely appeared in 52.
Dylan Morris
Liking Fatbat and Wonder-woman doesn't mean I don't like Kenan.
Robert Green
the world needs more snek and Tubby and Best Boy, let's not fight
Hudson Allen
I'll drink to that! And also to Marvel fucking up with absolutely no good Asian representation whatsoever!
Daniel Jenkins
That's remarkable.
Luis Flores
I also bought the first two trades this month because of Sup Forums's recommendations, glad I did, does anyone else like Bat-Man over Bruce as a character? I like that Chinese Batman is fun and not a constant downer like Bruce is.
Dylan Lewis
I like that he's not fisticuffs and has a strong focus on random gadgets. The B.U.V. was a great gag.
Xavier Rogers
Kenan seems to be the mopey one while Baix is the one who has a fun and relaxed demeanor, absolutely love the role reversal. I'm actually pretty curious how a meeting between Kenan and Damian would go.
Landon Mitchell
Fuck you. I'm loving monsters unleashed.
Wyatt King
Peng Deilan is the best!
Anthony Martinez
What did you guys think of the octogon parts of body stuff with his powers? I'm not sure I'm into it, to be honest.
Its super cool and a great example of working in a characters culture into their powerset without seeming uncreative.
Henry Gonzalez
Is it wrong that I want Kenan to meet Terry?
Henry Thompson
>Superman Beyond cartoon that takes the premise of NSM and moves it into the future, after Superman has died/retired/disappeared
Ethan Ross
Would that work timeline wise? I guess Terry would be young and dumb to a much wiser, older Kenan.
Jack Barnes
I'll admit, since I'm only the two trades in, I don't know how it all works out but I imagine that Supes' powers don't easily correspond to them.
Isaac Allen
Yeah its pretty cool, good to see this one isn't ending at 18 like Superwoman and BB
Juan Howard
Those were supposedly bad, right? I like Jaime because of the Brave & the Bold show, but I never read his comics.
Elijah Morales
I fucking loved this trade. My big issue was Avery Ho feeling like she came out of nowhere. Granted it's been a while since I read Flash rebirth, but I barely remembered her and was super confused at how she still had her powers and how she was willing to join JLC at the drop of a hat. Even more confused the JLC let her join.
Evan Hernandez
It's cool as fuck if you grow up with Taoism
Ryan Torres
I love it. It's a really unique take on a classic powerset, and ties into the cultural themes of the book really well. Plus, it forces Kenan to actually figure shit out in an interesting way that runs counter-intuitive to his personality.
Read his 2006 run. It's Jaime's first run, and definitely worth it. A lot of the stuff that came later was mediocre to bad.
Alexander Rodriguez
sounds perfect as a toy feature (octagon side lights up when you press the specific superman power).
Camden Myers
Haven't read Superwoman, but BB wasn't bad really its just not pulling sales enough, plus that frees up Kolins to work on something else. The Ted and Jamie duo got 3 solid tpb's though... it is what it is.
Jackson Gomez
I like it.
A learning curve for young superheroes is a necessity. I love Superman, he's a great character, but just "okay now I'll use this power" isn't something you should pull out for young characters. Even Jon has his own learning curve.
Plus it allows for failure, an important lesson for up-and-coming heroes.
Asher Miller
Amazing how well it tied in. I love it
Adam Campbell
Justice-League
Hunter Roberts
So for everyone shitposting about this from the last thread you guys need to chill.
Tamaki blows on Hulk and Supergirl because she can't into serialization yet, she's a graphic novel writer. She'll probably be fine in a one-shot story where she controls the pacing.
Hudson Diaz
Did the Great Ten have any good comics? They seem awesome.
Connor Sullivan
I straight up didn't recognize it as the same character as well. She's fun though.
Jose James
Her graphic novels suck. And wasn't Supergirl like 3 issues? How is a mini too much serialization to handle?
Connor Price
Being Super was 4 issue and it was very safe and mediocre
Chase Turner
>Japanese(-Canadian) chick
Most Excellent Superbat WHEN
Angel Perez
Oh no, people don't like this writer? I know nothing about comic book writers. What makes them bad? I can deal with boring, I'm more worried about the humor being lost. Or it biting off too much and becoming a melodrama with plot holes.
Gabriel Walker
So serialization has nothing to do with it and she's just a bad writer.
John Evans
Let's hope the editors do a good job
Easton Howard
How are Gene's other books?
Hunter Ramirez
Boxers and Saints is good.
Thomas Baker
Her pacing is pretty lousy. That's the only problem I've had. I heard her GNs were alright but never really cared enough to track them down.
Zachary Wood
I've been loving New Super-Man, but I have to admit I wouldn't be enjoying it half as much without the Sup Forums storytime threads where people explain the Chinese stuff like and Grass Mud Horse.
That kinda makes me worry about how the book is being seen by people (Americans at least) who just pick it up in the shop and read it by themselves.
Jacob Miller
Me too. I only got a lot of the stuff because I'm chinese.
>cao ni ma >white/green snake (definitely gave me the feels) >bagua >qi stuff
I actually did those grounding exercises as a kid and the stuff about emotions and qi is the same thing my sifu said
Austin Davis
Don't know why but I never liked Diana. I like this Wondy more than others. Hell even like Artemis in RHatO more.
Ryan King
>white/green snake >Fa Hai is a doomsday turtle I wonder who's gonna be Xu Mengjiao and who's gonna be Green Snake
Liam Sanchez
Do you think it'll hit #50? I only like buying trades...
Wyatt Powell
Bought this for a Sup Forumstard and he liked it. He hated brohulk
Jason Hall
>ONE ISSUE
THANK FUCKING GOD YES!!!!!!!!!
Nicholas James
I like the idea that they let her join because they had no idea how to get a flash of their own and weren't about to say no when one showed up at their door
Grayson Gonzalez
I think I-Ching spoke for Avery, so that's automatically an in
Owen Johnson
What writer would make you drop the series?
Jaxson Thomas
Anyone not Yang to be honest. Unless they bring in someone just as knowledgeable about China and equally good writer, I probably will be disappointed regardless That is not to say I will drop the book when Yang leaves though
Matthew Moore
Fun fact: Yang initially declined this series because he felt like he didn't have any connection to China. So all the mythology is him doing research
Ethan Wilson
I quite like her GN, but her Supergirl and She-hulck were not very, mainly due pacing issues.
Luis Hall
*very good
Luis Campbell
I only knew the stuff that they explained directly in the comic. Which there admittedly is a lot of explanation for.
Brandon King
Because WW is all over the place in terms of everything. This one is pretty consistent.
Her rather typical teenage behavior does seem pretty funny in hindsight given her origin.
Leo Rogers
Yeah it shows. This is who we should ask for, someone dedicated to this craft. Who else does this?
Lincoln Baker
kek. Thats also kinda cool though in a way because he's learning about it on the fly and working it all in without any kind of mental boundaries.
Jose Long
Regardless of how good or bad it ends up, I'm glad it's only a fill-in
William Watson
I liked Kenan after the superman zero escape
Jaxon Ward
This series is fucking kino
Brandon Edwards
That seemed like a tremendously stupid move. Is Zero a new thing? Is he like a new Superboy?
Matthew Thompson
> we'll be making some changes to the title! > we're getting rid of I Ching and now Kenan is a rapper and the book's changing its name to Big Hero 10!
Kayden Butler
subtle
Dominic Russell
they had a mini that was cut short by I think two issues because it didnt sell. IIRC Socialist Red Guardsman and Thundermind didnt get their backstories. I was pissed because Chinese Shazam had me interested, it was a decent read.
Bentley Thomas
>my sifu I DON'T CARE IF YOU'RE FAT UGLY AND SMELL I ENVY YOU NOW
Angel Diaz
That's because Deilan is a pure snakefu.
Cho was much better in Incredible Herc. I honestly don't dislike the idea of Cho becoming a Hulk and it's one of the few legacies that makes some sense, but the execution is seriously lacking.
Eli Hall
Okay, I read Flash Rebirth 1 again and yeah, I didn't even realize that Avery was Chinese. The name should've tipped me off "Avery Ho", but still, I thought it was just a joke teenager.
Wonder how she got involved with China Triad or whatever. Or who the fuck those guys even are.
Kevin Flores
>over design mons yikes
Oliver Reyes
>Who else does this? Most people don't even research the characters they write. And some like Bendis and Priest are firm and open in their decisions to not research.
Owen Morgan
I enjoyed his Avatar OGNs, but I eventually fell off of them. At the very least The Search is worth reading for the conclusion to the cliffhanger from the end of the series.
Carter Nelson
hes honestly the only reason i still read avatar occasionally
Luke Cox
Boxers and Saints felt like a gut punch (in a good way) I was expecting something like Mulan where it's one big romanticization due to the artstyle but it gets depressing as hell especially when you know the greater context of the Boxer Rebellion (they seriously thought the whole spirit possession shit was legit).
Kevin Parker
>Priest >Not Researching Deathstroke is full of callbacks to things that happened outside the book. He did deliberately ignore Tony Daniel's run though and things he doesn't give a shit about.
Evan Hernandez
My reaction exactly. GLY needs to write this book until the end of time.
