>student film
>movie starts with a character getting up in the morning
This is a disturbingly common trope in student films. It's used a fair bit in regular film but in student film it legitimately feels like it's over 50%

>Buddy cop/Cop drama movie
>It starts with the MC chasing a criminal

Attached: 1521489103340.jpg (640x646, 55K)

>student film
>ends with character waking up in the morning

>student film
>its about suicide

>Student film.
>Cast isn't 100% white.

>watching a student joint
>character pulls out a gun and starts saying "fuck"

Attached: 1495005636776.jpg (2000x2000, 629K)

>student film
>ends with a sudden cut to black and loud noise

Ugh, this is even more common than starting with the character waking up.

Anyone have a link to that movie on youtube with a hitman confessing to a priest? I think it was called the Confession. The original uploader deleted it.

i can go to school and graduate by making something that looks like this shit?

Nah, he's seemingly deleted it everywhere. Wish I had made a copy back in the day. Perfect example of cringe-y student film.

>student film
>director is also the main character

I used to have a playlist filled with a bunch of shitty student films that were posted on Sup Forums but I can't find it now.

>director is also the main character
Is this one so common just because of an inflated ego? If you're Orson Welles go for it, but only an infinitesimal amount of people are comparable to Orson Welles.

I had to make a student film this semester and made a mockumentary about a fake rock band

It was pretty fun and we only ripped off Spinal Tap for one joke

probably because most people are lazy and it's easier to remember lines and make up shit when you're also the actor,

or its because you want it to be perfect and the only person who knows exactly what you want is yourself

how do you make a low budget interesting immersive story that doesn't include the following; violence, drugs, crime, 2deep4u nonsense, cringy humor (i'm so ironic teehee). what are you left with? it is going to be a trope filled mess either way.

>or its because you want it to be perfect and the only person who knows exactly what you want is yourself
If a director can't clearly express or convey to their actors what they want from them they shouldn't be directing.

It's a fucking film class not Sundance retard

Yeah. I’m currently working with a friend who’s putting on paper my story conceotnfor a short film and this is the main thing I’m looking to avoid. I don’t want to make something that feels like/starts like a student short film, always some entirely meaningless, bland world. I’m making something that sets up the characters, sets up the world around them, then starts the story.

i love music mockumentaries and apoof biopics. It's really fucking dated now, but Fear of a Black Hat was like a favorite comedy when I was a little stereo.

Throw a link up for your class video.

Twilight Zone type stuff eg Primer.

>student film
>is in black and white

Attached: 1517874091961.jpg (655x627, 101K)

>his movie doesn't start with a spaceship coming out of warp

I've lost interest.

Point still stands. Also your performance in that film you directed was shit and you shouldn't have done it yourself. Deal with it.

Just make what you want

Boy you have no idea. I actually knew this one guy through a mutual aquaintance in college and he ended up with a degree from the New York Film academy and the only thing that changed was production quality in his movies. Here's a sample
youtu.be/Qoy4nvUtFhM

That's at least a novel idea. Was there any music?

>student film

Daily reminder that this is what you get when you spend 4 years in film school.

Holy shit that projection kek
I didn't get a worthless meme degree like film thankfully

>making a student film and have thus far avoided all these pitfalls
Whew

>student film
>it's boring as fuck

i'm not in film school. just saying it will inevitably have some tropes in it.

Had to tap out by the time the title card came up. Ugh, why would they cast that guy as a fighter? Ridiculous. His voice makes him sound like a pubescent teenager. Not right at all for the part.

Yep. I made it with some friends that I used to play local gigs with for fun, and we played an original song in the film as well as a goofy ass slow, romantic version of Holiday in Cambodia we called "Honeymoon in Cambodia". It was pretty fun

I can't seem to find Myth anywhere. The one with the dragoons and shitty cgi

>student film
>its about sex, drugs or awful shit happening to people
I hate it desu, dude people suffering lmao is the most lazy form of film making

Attached: thinking-emoji-298x300.png (298x300, 36K)

>That projection
No. And it's obvious that's why you were so defensive about it.

This one is undoubtedly the most common student film trope.
What do people think is a fair gauge to decide whether it's worth watching a student or short film? Most audiences decide whether they like a feature film or not in the first ten minutes. What do you think the appropriate time gauge is for student short films?

>student film
>BANG, cut to black, credits roll

Attached: 1519709633832.png (657x527, 33K)

I have to make a short film for university. It has to relate to social justice or student issues. I'm so sickened by these limitations that I have barely thought about it. Help me Sup Forums

>He went to film school
>Instead of going to F.I.L.M.S
fucking plebeians.

>film class

>end up making a comedy about pirates
>mediocre grade
>fail the class

>action films by ugandan's too poor to buy hard drives to save their films
>infinitely more enjoyable than any hollywood action flick made in the last decade

what sort of story would you tell to make it compelling? a lot of narratives are made from human suffering or flaws (addiction, dealing with tragedy, crime)

Last semester I was in a film class, we had to make a 3 minute film. One group did a film that was 2 minutes of a guy watching a girl jog, and in the last ten seconds he kidnaps her.

The leader of the group spent seven minutes afterward detailing how he takes her home and brutally rapes and murders her after the film ends. It was the most uncomfortable thing I've ever witnessed in a uni course.

Attached: 12319293188.gif (332x332, 1.84M)

That's because it's the easiest way. Directors are lazy or just plain student tier

>student film
>opening sequence has music that doesn't really fit and goes on too long

Attached: pepe.jpg (229x220, 6K)

Just follow these and you'll be okay

Probably the result of a shortage of actors, either due to there being a neglected-until-the-last-minute deadline, inability to find anyone who actually wants to star in a shitty student film, or shyness on the part of the director.

Similar:
>actors are the director's family, personal friends, and fellow classmates
>they aren't in any way actors
>film feels even shittier than it actually is as a result

>student film
>the characters are having coffee & cigarettes

Attached: dogsface.jpg (240x250, 10K)

>student film
>it's about an experienced hitman played by a 19 year old and is described by the creator as "tarantino-esque"

>The leader of the group spent seven minutes afterward detailing how he takes her home and brutally rapes and murders her after the film ends.
He sounds like a really supreme gentleman.

>student film
>violent scenes have a weird soundtrack or classical music
>has nudity, full on hanging flopping balls and male asshole

>student film
>ending has boy ask girl question
>she smiles
>cut to black

Attached: sm.jpg (480x640, 18K)

First minute or two. By far the most common student film trope is that they have an interesting moment in mind and they make everything up until that point boring, as their idea of contrast. I've always tried really hard to make them interesting right off the bat, in seconds if possible.

All of these reasons, and more, are why I never went to film school.

>that question is "Did you fart?"

>student film
>has that one scene shot from inside the fridge or microwave

Yeah, you're supposed to be learning how to direct though. Sharing your vision with your actors is crucial to learning how to direct.

>has nudity, full on hanging flopping balls and male asshole
one of my student films involved a "nudity" scene where we saw the character's naked back, my actor INSISTED we make it full frontal instead, so we filmed the scenes and ended up not using them

what the fuck is wrong with actors

>student film
>it's hardcore pornography
>professor quickly shuts it off
>student gets upset and insists it is artistic

this

jesus fucking christ how many times I've seen that fridge shot

Attached: montereyjack.jpg (650x400, 35K)

>student film
>its a drama

Attached: justfuckingwow.gif (403x234, 1.99M)

honestly make whatever you want and put a big fuck you to your professor, sounds like shit and i would never watch something like that on my free time. youre going to school for fucking movie making either go all out and make something you enjoy and if it turns out good you will get noticed regardless of your sjw school, or you can die trying doing something you thought you could make a career in

Did he have a large penis? He may have just wanted to show off.

Lol, we had an art film project back in high school and I totally put "catered by" in the credits because of Jays student film. Here it is below uploaded exclusively for this reply youtu.be/2mgNToYq7SM

desu it's a lot easier to make good drama than even passable comedy at a student level. Comedy is very difficult.

pretty average desu

Okay, that's somewhat strange.

>student film
>scene of a lecture about the films subject

>student film
>film is about a disorder the student director has
>director is also the star
>also the only character at all
>whole class watches in uncomfortable silence

>student film
>its just the director creampieing some “actress” in the class over and over

just sit down and think of something fun to make. I was DREADING my documentary assignment during one of my filmmaking classes, but it turned out to be really fun once I hashed an idea out.

that was physically painful to watch, i'm assuming this is a speedrunning event

>Want to be a writer of sorts
>see thread like this
>realize that I may not make it

I mean, I haven't even started out doing anything, it's just something I've wanted to do.
What should I do Sup Forums?

so this is how i look to other people, fucking hell, I have no hope

Just make something people will enjoy and you'll be able to stomach if not be proud of.

Death Wish but instead of Charles Bronson it's a nigger. Retell the entire story in 5 mins if you can.

>Learn all you can about what not to do
>Make content and try to not do those things you know not to do
>Continue doing it until you get better
>Get lucky or know someone in the industry
>Get a chance to do it for money

>be film student
>put in a group with female director
>her script is literally about a suicidal girl and starts with her waking up in the morning
>ending is her cutting her wrists in the bath
>tell her i don't like the script and offer suggestions
>i shoot and light it
>she and her female friend edit it
>surprise surprise the movie sucks but the cinematography is great
>they don't put me in the credits

This pisses me off to this day

write a fuckload of scripts. my honest recommendation is to try to get to the point you can just shit out scripts like Max Landis, except make them good. you're not going to write The Godfather your first go around, you need to practice

>student film
>has a clubbing scene
>has drugs
>has sex or nudity
>has a black and white scene
>has gays /trans or whatever
>has people cussing often
>Dutch angles
>has symbolism
>is a re telling of some obscure myth or whatever
>has dirty people
>involves dysfunctional families
>has children or pets dying
>coming of age
>has a scene full of neon lights
>is purposefully bleak and lacks color

>student actor keeps looking at the camera

My advice? Write something. Now throw it in the trash and write something new. Do this about a dozen times or until you write something decent. Now start saving them and keep writing.

Why do teens and young adults think suicide is ever interesting? Maybe if it was kind of funny, but it never is.

i watch this through to the end every time. i can only hope this person was severely bullied throughout their time at school.

No you guys are mean. Cant handle the blow to my confidence before I start a new project

>Not respecting the craft and trying to make everything you touch kino

>Producing output for potential opportunity rather than just because
Found your first problem

This. People who start off not taking it seriously end up being hacks. Treat every film like you're trying to make the next Citizen Kane.

Is he blocking part of the projector the whole time? Why didn't anyone tell him to gtfo the way?
