I wish Rankin-Bass had the opportunity to adapt the whole of LotR. Sure, it probably would have been kinda cheap and bowdlerised, but it would have been neat to see and RotK wouldn't have been as much of a mess.
Heck, John Boorman was working on a LotR movie. That got scraped and some of the ideas he had for the movie went into Excalibur.
Thank god that never happened
What about the 60s Hobbit cartoon which was made with $50 for the sole purpose of holding movie rights a lil longer till they're more valuable to sell?
The Boorman LotR script had all sorts of insanity but the thing that always sticks in my memory is Galadrial made Frodo fuck her before he could look in her mirror

>getting away with /ss/ because he's technically a grown man
the man was a visionary, well ahead of his time

William L. Snyder was a producer who owned the film rights to The Hobbit. For whatever contractual reason, he had to actually turn the rights into a film before a certain date or he would lose them. So he had Gene Deitch create an incredibly rushed 12-minute "animated" adaptation of The Hobbit. It was unknown for years because it only ever had one showing to about a dozen people in Czechoslovakia. You can read the full story from Deitch himself here:

I need to get high
>Bilbo and Mika reigned together
>Bilbo killed Smaug-I mean Slag(so alpha he doesnt even remember his name right)
Is this Bilbos own fan fiction? Is this what was actually in There and Back Again when he gave it to Frodo?
Apparently Aragorn also nails Eowyn on the abttlefield which should surprise no Excalibur fans
First for John Hurt Anton Chigurh Indian Aragorn and Viking Boromir
Frodo is 18 in human years, Pippin is like 14 or 15.
...
How the fuck did Wormtongue make it into the poster?
>those tiny ladders
>Rankin/Bass's The Hobbit
Still my favourite Tolkien adaptation, to this day. GOAT soundtrack, too.
>Aruman
Indian Aragorn was a total badass. Live action Aragorn looks like a wimp by comparisson
What's the point of the ladders?
Window openings in the fort, is the most logical thing I can think of at the moment.
...
>fuck the ladders are too short
>we fuckin carried these for weeks we're using them goddammit
That shiteating grin on Sams face.
Rankin bass Eowyn is a qt
It really shows how dedicated they were to the process of rotoscoping that they even kept in blatant mistakes on the part of the reference actors. Like Aragon falling down or the Ringwraith being unable to control his horse.
The real beauty in those ladders is that they're easily long enough to scale the section on the side. But, nope, we're goin' up the middle, boys!
Or the third Ringwraith not taking off his cowboy hat
>Rankin/Bass's The Hobbit
Legit great movie. So charming.
>YEEHHAW, WE GUN GET THAT THAR ONE RING OFF YA MIDGET BOY
John Huston has the greatest voice of all time. DDL gets so much credit for There Will Be Blood but he's pretty much just doing an SNL-tier impression.
>the tray-sure
>They're getting away!
>We'll...
>Don't sa-.
>cut them off at the pass!
>Oh my God, Frank! I hate you so much!
>WHAT IN TARNATION IS THAT BIG OL WATER STALLION COMIN OUTTA THE RIO GRANDE?
>I'LL TELL YOU WUT IF AH HAD MAH FLYIN HORNY TOAD WE'D GET THAT LITTLE GREENHORN OVER YONDER SURE AS FLIES ON COW PIES
...
youtube.com
>The old animated Smaug was more threatening then the new one with shitty cgi gold
Using the authentic Eowyn dialogue was also an improvement
>Merry is done by Casey Kasem
Shaggy sure grew a spine.
>MAH FLYIN HORNY TOAD
>I am Gandalf, and Gandalf means ME!
This was definitely something.
>Witch King sounds like a robot Joker
Not feeling it
It's definitely the Black manta effect
I loved RB Hobbit as a kid, and still enjoy it. It had a MUCH better Smaug than Jackson's.
What the fuck was that.
Almost as bad as Bakshi's LotR.
really made me think
The Rankin-Bass Hobbit is far better than Jackson's in general because it actually uses dialogue from the book. It would be amazing if it was two hours long and had a bigger budget and they didn't cut anything out.
Still angry that Jackson played this like for humor
>no complete story comic.
its been decades since the 70's, more lotr comics when?
>no discussion of Cкaзoчнoe пyтeшecтвиe миcтepa Бильбo Бeггинca Хoббитa
Plebs
>Ruski Hobbit
Thought I was the only one.
HOLD!
WHERE THERE'S A WHIP
THERE IS A WAY
They make Bilbo look a lot uglier on the poster than he actually does in the film.
The same way he made it into the LOTR Conquest game instead of Gollum
We don't wanna go to war today, but the Lord of the Lash says, nay Nay NAY!
That's Starscream, not Robo Joker
WTF is this fanfiction shit? It's somehow worse than Russian Hobbit and Peter Jackson Hobtrilogy combined.
You wait!
Men comes before orcs.
GET BACK!
tfw the titular character whom the entire plot revolves around appears for one scene and has about three lines
I know this is /tg/ but anyone else play this?
>map is upside down
Don't mind me, just posting a jolly singing man
>Frank
>Goddammit, Frank, we talked about this.
>We talked about this, Frank
>You were in the room with us, Frank
>We voted, Frank, you remember?
>We all voted that we'd wear the spooky viking helmets
>We all agreed, Frank
>We agreed on the viking helmets, Frank
>Not the FUCKING cowboy hats!
>I'm SO fucking done with you, Frank
Check out the comic series illustrated by David Wenzel, it's pretty damn good
>annimated Silmarillion in the vein of Fantasia.
You have ten seconds to explain how this isn't a multi-million idea.
Too obscure. Only people who would go see it would be the real die-hard Tolkien and animation fans.
It'd be like a more expensive, less successful Laika film
seconding, excellent series, art's pretty good
Can somebody post a MEGA of the animated movie soundtracks?
i watched when i was a kid,i remember the orcs scared the shit out of me,i still remember them from time to time
This is the weirdest version of The Magnificent Seven ever
I think what kills me the most is how everything about Tolkien has to adapt the movies visual style now. I know I sound like a contrarian hipster faggot when I say this but when I read the books what I imagined in my head was quite rather different and Id like to see more distinct visual takes on the stuff again.
There's only two illustrators that can capture Tolkienverse for me. Tolkien himself and Alan Lee.
>I SAY I SAY BOY WHAT'S THAT BOY UP TO HEY BOY WATHCOO TRYING TA DO? you better be givin' tat' ring back before the dark lord come and take ya...now don't set the world on fire... *say, that boy ain't lightest feather on the bird if you know what i mean*
watched it on VHS repeatedly. it was on the same tape as Princess Bride
That's a good tape
and legolas was cute. CUTE!
Rankin Bass's witch king design was awesome
so was Eowyn
lets noit forget the finnish LOTR
i saw the first film as a kid and hated it. Something about the art style unnerved the hell outta me.
The halflings were CUTE
mfw i never knew what middle earth looked like until i played on the map in atwar. It still doesnt look like what I imagined watching the movies.
>Come not between the Nazgül and his prey, or he will slay THEE in turn
That's...
That's literally the EXACT opposite of what that line is supposed to be for fuck's sake.
If you didn't have room for the full line then just fucking cut it.
unintentional rape-faces: the movie
>pictured: gandalf's face when he arrives at Frodo's house after Bilbo leaves the little fellow all alone
>But Aruman..
>SARUMAN!!!
Gets me everytime.
I've never forgotten this song since I first heard it 30+ years ago. It still pops up in my head occasionally.
Once upon a time in the Middle Earth.
>You brought one ring too many.
>The greatest adventure is what lies ahead
>Today and tomorrow are yet to be said
Found a used DVD copy at a store last week. Less good than I remembered, but still very charming. For a TV adaptation it's pretty faithful
>triggered
Has anyone ever tried to make a song for LOTR like Lenard Nimoy did for Ballad of Bilbo Baggins?
I usually got to the Complete Songs and Poems by the Tolkien Ensemble for my LoTRs music fix.
It has Christopher Lee for several of the tracks
If only I had asked that at home instead of at work.
Now I got to wait 8 hours to watch that beautiful vid.
>Alan Lee
but that's the fucking movie shit that sucks
Ted Nasmith is good
Also the german dude who did the illuminated manuscript for the silmarillion
You left out John Howe, my dude.
Arwen was like 13 and not his love interest so it was a-ok
twn be your dad
