I think there's a line you cross where you stop expecting movies and television to help you understand life better. People who just follow along with character arcs and shit seem to think that there's always a moral lesson to draw. But at some stage you stop looking for that lesson, and just want to appreciate the work for what it is.
X Files is about overcoming adversity and learning to trust other people. Twin Peaks is about editing a scene of a woman just repeating numbers over and over again and still drawing the viewer's attention.
