Pacific Rim: Uprising

Why did this look/feel so much cheaper than the first despite having a similar budget?

Because the budget went to hundreds of computer animators instead of sets and props.

Because before studios usually fucked up third movie, now they give up on second.

Money doesn't buy you experience and talent. Different artists working on it etc. The CG looks significantly shittier than the first one.

you know all the robots and monsters and cities in the first Pacific Rim were CGI too, right?

They were used relatively sparingly. This one has five robots fighting an even gianter monster. Compare the suit props from the first one to this one. This one's suits looks worse than a power rangers show.

Because studios know Chinese audiences will gobble up this swill no matter how cheap or shoddy it looks.

Finally, Transformers for my generation.

>faster moving jaegers (which Boyega pushed for as producer) looked way too cartoony; did not feel like they had any real weight to them
>most of movie is set during the day, showing off the weak CG like

lets get into some other issues...

>Boyega is just playing Finn
>no one can act well
>the characters in the first were bad, but these characters were worse
>same beginning as Transformers: The Last Knight (scrapyard, young girl building her own robot, etc…)
>ending is literally the ending to Independence Day: Resurgence (which was also an awful fucking movie)
>action was dull and poorly directed
>another 'aliens want to terraform Earth' plot
>Charlie is the villain
etc…etc…

First movie was trash, but this was so much worse

The original was a passion project from Del Toro and a sequel without him makes no fucking sense. He actually put some thought into how to make everything look as good as possible with the budget they had.

This was just directed by some guy who doesn't really give a fuck and he even let the retarded lead actor make major creative decisions.

I can pass the CGI since I liked the battles but man those kids where annoying as hell

>15 year old girl built an incredibly complex machine by herself out of spare parts

It really is like my garbage chinese cartoons!

>lateral force on a skyscraper

These guys are designed to have just enough lateral resistance to take wind and earthquakes (I think, it's been a few years since my statics courses, can't remember if Fe is lateral or not). This is just so stupid.

there was a lot of China pandering in this

Movies in general lately. I'm thinking it's because they're rendering at a higher resolution. Whereas they used to just render at around 2K and then transfer to film.

Was this actually in the movie? I remember it in the trailer. It's just bad camera movement before anything else.

>see it with friends
>a dumb movie about robots smashing monsters
>they complain about it being a dumb movie about robots smashing monsters
Christ I want to kill myself

it was indeed in the movie. and it looks worse on the big screen.

Different productions. Designs and production was Toronto for the first one. Second movie is Aussie production. Trade off is more generic designs and weaker costume design, but superior CG work.

>superior CG work
proofs?

can you spoil the spoiler part a bit more?

Basically Charlie Day's character from the first movie has kept drifting with the alien brain they found and is now under control of the aliens (Precursors). He is working for a corporation that is producing jaeger drones to replace the jaeger program and has secretly put kaiju brains or something like that in them which, when activated, grows inside the drone thus creating a kaiju in jaeger armour. He cackles like a villain throughout the last part of the movie before being caught.

>superior cg work

the CG was aged the moment the trailer released

the concept doesnt sound that bad.

it doesn't sound bad in theory, but its really poorly handled in the movie. There is only 1 action scene with the kaiju-jaegers before that plot is dropped by a cheap-out plot point. I love Charlie Day but him hamming it up as a villain was mediocre at best, especially when its just him on top of a building talking to out loud to no one for most of the climax.

>let's take the Mass Effect art direction for the suits but as conceptualized by given as a commission to a cosplayer for $300
that nigga is a genius!

>killed of mako to make way for that shitty chink cunt
>doesnt even die in a jaeger

No vision.

The first one was mostly focused on looking good while being less fun. Del Toro filmed in locations and then added robots and kaiju on top.

Uprising is a lot more flashy CGI with tons of super robots and monsters, which is fun but looks more a bit more fake, especially in the day scenes.

>scrapyard

That's literally copied from TFA though.

Having fun is for fags and nerds.

Why are we not sharing the most important aspect of this crap? This little cutie right here.

>the concept doesnt sound that bad.

He is one of the best parts of the movie.

In the other hand Jing Tiao stole my heart.

Attached: Liwen_Shao_(Uprising)-01.png (1920x816, 1.35M)

The movie is filled with cute grills, you can pick and choose.

Attached: C26m_qIVQAA9vYd.jpg (1200x914, 156K)

why did del Toro pass on directing PR2 to make Fish porn?

I'm still mad they killed off Mako when she could've been on the sidelines as a support character

Attached: guillermo-del-toro-feature.jpg (3000x2039, 600K)

Well in that situation wouldn’t his foot just blast into the building?

He probably wanted to do something different and more personal. And the movie probably only exists because of Boyega anyway.

Although a lot of the ideas in Uprising are clearly part of his original plan for the franchise.

The climax is pure Super Sentai, at which point those kind of questions are unnecessary.

> tfw they killed off the qt asian cadet

at least the other asian girl survived

Attached: DYNqmroWsAAVSEk.jpg (680x1024, 78K)

Jing Tiao is the most famous star in the movie outside of Boyega, in retrospective it should have been obvious she was going to have a prominent role.

Not in terms of quality but in the fact that Australia have more CG workers and have more experience with purely green screen production in comparison to Toronto.

Because kike producers siphon money off the CGI budget then blame lazy animators for poor production quality, which is why reboots always have CGI shoehorned into them. Look it up.

The China pandering in this movie was off the charts.

The problem is that CG is used so much these days people don't notice it when it's done well so people only notice the imperfections.

youtube.com/watch?v=bL6hp8BKB24

I would bet that almost the entire battle in Tokyo is CGI but since the buildings look well people don't think about it. That sequence alone is probably a lot more work than people realize.

hey hey hey dont say things you cant take back

>China pandering

It's basically a Chinese movie, I think the studio is owned by China, a lot of the locations are in Asia, and the structure of the film itself feels more like a Chinese movie than Hollywood.

literally about to watch this in 5m.

saw the first one two nights ago for the first time and can't believe i waited so long - saw it three times again since then.

can't seem to get my mind off it. i know this one isn't going to be as good but fuck it.

Accounting tricks funneling the money to Black Panther free tickets for entire schools and churches

>wh*te boi still mad about Black Panther being a success

Uprising also did really well in China which pretty much proves that Black people can carry big budgets films over there.

enjoy for what it is user.

I'm surprised it even got made at all, with all the production problems and release date changes it had.

Del Taco knew what he was doing. The director of this is a literal who faggot who's only directed like half a dozen episodes of TV shows.

You know, let's set aside realism for a second and how buildings would react to a robot this big; was it worth it for this shot? For a shot where a giant robot pushes off a building to get its leg off the ground high enough to give the kaiju a weak-looking kick to the head instead of using its laser swords to attack directly?

Of course not, it looks stupid and is stupid. It would look stupid if they did it in a low-budget spy movie to show how graceful and acrobatic the female lead is. It's like what Buffy would've considered a sweet move for their weekly TV show. It just looks even more stupid when a giant robot is doing it.

what a cutie. how much is from her in the movie? any suggestive clothing?

Just came out of the theater
I expected big robots battling dinosaur monsters
Thats exactly what I got
10 bucks well spent, which is a damn sight better than what I can say about a lot of "good" movies these days.

Did they even build cockpit sets for the sequel?

It's the difference between realistic robots and super robots. The first movie was realistic while this one is just more fun and silly. That kick is nothing compared with some of the shit they do in the movie.

this scene just looks straight up sentai/power rangers like.

It's actually in line with his character from the first movie to be an unwitting pawn of the aliens thanks to drifting with kaiju brain, since it's exactly what he did in the first movie, but having him be an actual cackling villain is a little weird. If he'd been blissfully unaware of the implications of his actions right until the very last second, that would be more in character.

>15
but where are her boobs?

Because Del Toro makes things he is passionate about, not soulless sequel cash-ins. That's why he made Crimson Peak instead of doing literally anything else with his time.

She is basically the co-protagonist but gets sidetracked a bit by the wacky scientists and the Chinese CEO.

>it's going to outgross the original

Also
>take heavy inspiration from Evangelion and Gundum
>become absolute shit
Really makes me think

did the Jaegers in the first movie even jump? I can't remember.

Stryker Eureka was the most fast and modern one and the most it could was sprint.

Adding to this it's also why he did Hellboy instead of coming back to do Blade 3

It's what happens when the creative mind leaves the project. Look at metal gear.

looks like a guy, honestly

she looked OK,
not exaclty a qt but not that ugly either.

how do you spend most of your 150 million budget on fx and still have the movie look like shit

holy shit, she's gorgeous.

why didn't they put her in the poster? nothing against boyega, but she would have get the straight male demographic

There is a giant monster that is formed by all the other monsters combining into one.

>why didn't they put her in the poster?

Because Hollywood is afraid of girls. Although the trailers make it obvious she is important.

>150 million opening

IT WAS SUPPOSED TO FLOP

Is that why it was cutting to different scenes so abruptly every couple of minutes during the first half of the movie?

> $33,227,565 Domestic

Foreign BO is carrying this movie.

The editing isn't that fast, but it's clearly faster than what people are used in Hollywood movies. Although I think they also cut many things to keep it short.

Gipsy Danger was able to jump or atleast hurl itself in the air towards the EMP-powered Kaiju in the harbour fight

Well it did $65 million in China alone.

you've got to adjust for inflation you dummy

did they went overboard with the animu stuff in this movie or did part 1 had more references?

Attached: Pacific Rim 2.png (533x356, 311K)

It's basically live-action anime, and the white drones remind me of Eva.

youtube.com/watch?v=p_ReiyIzNX8

Del Toro intentionally didn’t have references or homages to anime or mecha in the first movie so it could stand on its own.

Why does anime ruin everything?

most big budget films budgets are a ponzi scheme

especially sequels

Because it has a nigger as it's lead

Would have been great in a movie that wasn’t shit. I suspect it was one of Del Toros ideas from before he left as I recall something about corrupted Charlie being in the original art book.

Also would have worked much better if they had focused more on making him a guy losing his mind and sense of self to the influence and will of the aliens, rather than making him a literal puppet that speaks in a distorted demon voice on behalf of the aliens.

This reminds me of Spy Kids 3D

well, not completely... ;)

That skyscraper would just fold on itself like foam without offering any resistance, just saying.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR READY

Del Toro was going to direct it at first but left it and decided to do A Shape of Water instead. So I would say most of the film are his ideas, although they probably did some changes, like having more Asian characters.

I have the feeling they were dragging their feet with approving it for so long that he eventually had to focus on something else. And by the time they went through with for sure greenlighting it, he was already in another contract. That’s pure assumption though.

They're about equal but Uprising had more normie ones.
>t.pleb
The movie opens with a Mazinger, Robot Jox and Tetsujin 28 reference all within 10 min of each other. If you didn't understand that the "Gypsy is Analogue" line is a reference to the "Giant Robo is Nuclear" line in Giant Robo: The Day The Earth Stood Still then Del Toro tricked you by picking obscure enough homages.

pretty much,
that and joining a para-military force at 12-15 years old.

>I have the feeling they were dragging their feet with approving it for so long that he eventually had to focus on something else. And by the time they went through with for sure greenlighting it, he was already in another contract

That's allegedly what happened with The Hobbit.

But they had the good sense not to fight in broad daylight, because CGI works best in dark, rainy settings.
Also, the cockpits were real sets.

I'd fuck Saber Athena DESU
