Look at the margin of victory for both Illinois and Texas, and read up on the Democratic machines in those areas at the time. It's made for several dissertations.
Anyway, it is less "proof" than possible explanation for why Ohio's trends didn't coincide with national trends that time around.

California's results to my knowledge have not been as widely contested by historians versus Texas during LBJ's time as a Senator or Chicago during the machine politics of the several decades before and few decades after. So where is that coming from?
