In the aftermath of Superman's death, intergalactic conqueror Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds) arrives on Earth, attacks the island of Themyscira and steals the Mother Box, an ancient artifact guarded by the Amazons. Queen Hypolita (Connie Nielsen) alerts her daughter, Diana Prince (Gal Gadot), who travels to Gotham City to ask Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) for help. Bruce has had visions of an impending alien invasion and is investigating the kidnappings of several scientists from S.T.A.R. Labs by Steppenwolf's enforcers, the Parademons. Diana reveals that Steppenwolf attempted to subjugate Earth once before, but was defeated by an alliance between humans, Themyscira, Atlantis, the Green Lantern Corps and the Old Gods. His secret weapon, three powerful Mother Boxes, were left behind and split between the three kingdoms.
Bruce reveals that S.T.A.R. Labs has one of the Mother Boxes and sends Diana to meet Victor Stone (Ray Fisher), a college athlete who was severely injured in a car accident. Victor's father, Silas Stone (Joe Morton), used the Mother Box to revive Victor as a cyborg. Victor is unable to control his new powers and refuses to help. Silas is later captured by the Parademons, who are searching for the Mother Box. Meanwhile, Bruce travels to Iceland to meet Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), the rightful heir to the throne of Atlantis, who has been exiled for being a a half-breed. Arthur refuses to help him, and later tries to defend Atlantis from Steppenwolf, but Steppenwolf defeats him and leaves with their Mother Box.
In Central City, Bruce recruits young speedster Barry Allen (Ezra Miller), and they meet with Diana in Gotham. They are called by Commissioner James Gordon (J.K. Simmons), who has located the scientists in an abandoned tunnel connecting Gotham and Metropolis. Victor joins them as they go there and rescue the scienttists, including Silas. Steppenwolf confronts and nearly kills the group before Arthur rescues them, while Steppenwolf escapes.
Returning to the Batcave, Bruce believes that they're not capable of defeating Steppenwolf alone and decides to use a Mother Box to revive Superman, despite Diana's objections. They retrieve it from S.T.A.R. Labs and take it to the damaged Kryptonian scout ship in Metropolis. Barry and Victor retrieve Superman's body and activate the Mother Box by combining their powers, and it reactivates the scout ship, which heals Superman.
Superman returns confused and attacks the heroes. Parademons steal the Mother Box while they're distracted. Bruce calls for Lois Lane (Amy Adams), and seeing her restores Superman's mind. He leaves with Lois for Kent Farm to meet his mother, Martha Kent (Diane Lane).
Armed with the Mother Boxes, Steppenwolf attacks a village in Ukraine and begins reshaping Earth to the image of his master Darkseid. Bruce and Diana apologize to each other and rally Barry, Victor and Arthur to stop him. They arrive at the village in an armored jet and fight through the Parademons to reach Steppenwolf's stronghold, where Victor disables the Mother Boxes, saving the world. Steppenwolf attacks and nearly kills the heroes before Superman intervenes and defeats him. The heroes then protect the innocent, while Steppenwolf is betrayed by the Parademons and taken to his homeworld, Apokolips, to be punished for his failure.
The world celebrate Superman's return, and he resumes his life as Clark Kent. Clark, Bruce, Diana, Arthur, Barry and Victor go their separate ways, ready to assemble once again should the world need them.
In a post-credits scene, Clark and Barry meet to have a race.
