One thing I think hurting this season-- or more like these 4 most recent episodes since the movie was intended as the conclusion of S2 in everything but when it aired-- besides the frontloaded shipping drama and no villains, is the lack of lore in the aftermath of the movie (which of course did have actual lore). Yeah sounds dumb, but while 1 had the excuse of setting stuff up, 2 had already touched on some of the properties of the wand split and dipping down and Star's wings 4 episodes in.

What have we learned about the mythology of the universe or whatever? Not much. The sanctuary Glossaryck stuff was more or less just what already happened with the MHC at the end of the movie, and his connection to the state of the book was implied then as well when it burned up. We still don't know shit about Eclipsa except she likes the rose garden and Snookers, and that second part is also from Battle for Mewni. There's the debate about her being evil/doing what she had to do, but that's nothing these threads haven't been saying for the past year.

Even as they're clearly going for character development and stuff, things just feel stagnant right now. You know how for the first season you sometimes have to persuade new watchers "it gets a plot, just keep watching"? It feels like we're at that stage but in the 3rd season instead, which is kind of ridiculous. Sometimes people complain about the beginning of the second season, true, but at least then it felt like we were getting more info about the world despite the heavy slice of life stuff. And Star wasn't even on Mewni then.

I just want to piggyback off this post say that how you feel about the characters in Star vs. is never permanent.

-Ludo and Buff Frog: Went from Saturday morning villains to cherished side characters (Next appearance WHEN)
-Glossy: Went from annoying mentor to playing 20-D chessmaster. And to throw a wrench in it, now he's retarded
-Tom: Went from "that one ex character who's a jelly asshole" to a really cool dude.
-And just to be consistent: Star and Marco seem to have almost swapped places in the fans eyes right now at least in terms of views of their maturity

Even Pony is starting to find her fans now. All I'm saying is that the way we feel about characters can quite easily change for the better

But how is that possibly true when we've been on a crazy roller coaster of emotions this past week going faster than any of the previous seasons. By the end of next week, looking at the synopses, it'll feel like an entire season's gone by

The characters are changing but it feels like this could be happening in any setting. Like they're not really taking advantage of the magic and fantasy setting despite having every opportunity, even by comparison to 2. Plot's over now, time for shipping.

And I know that's not true and that things are guaranteed to change soon, but the issue is that it feels like forever and it's just been 4 days. For non-obsessives watching it'd feel even longer. You know what helps? If you don't take too seriously a cartoon aimed for kids under 13. Seriously. Don't know about you but I try watching it for fun and all but I can't help it and see many flaws with it. Then again I remember when I was a kid and back then I saw cartoons of the time as flawless too.

In the other news I am disappointed in Star. Often she seems to be very reasonable which is really impressive for her, and then there are moments when she basically says to Marco's face she loves him and then acts like it's nothing and she's almost aggresive over him returning because muh bustung in muh life without giving me a heads up - geee, almost like I have seen that already in the very same show. When it goes down to writing Star's character as female they do fantastic job.
