Haven’t seen the new one yet, but I always felt that Ruby traded up for the most part with RNGR, due to my liking the deuteragonist team more than the main one.
Ren was especially preferable to Blake as the stoic one. Kind of snarky, more likable, and has a much more traumatic past without being a total bitch about it too.

It's understandable in japan as they're fairly homogonistic and their culture, etiquette, language, and flavors are so starkly foreign. They just don't want to deal with asshole foreigners and it also lets less-asshole foreigners know that they wont have servers with workable english, english menus, and chicken strip baskets. Yes, the nips are xenophic as all hell but it's not necessarily a bad thing to not want to deal with people who wont assimilate at all during their trip and can't even have a basic grasp of functional japanese.
