All this year I'll be posting Punisher comics. Most of them will be from the pre-Ennis era, but some will be from the Ennis era as well. Expect at least 1 storytime per week.
Yesterday I finished up the era of Punisher comics that begin in the mid-80s and lasted into the mid-90s, with a story arc called "Countdown", which you can read here: I also posted a "graphic novel" called "Empty Quarter" yesterday as well, which you can also read over here: However, I never really completely finished the classic era of The Punisher. Yeah, I storytimed it through to the end, but there were so many one-shots and miniseries and cameos and team-ups and crossovers and just so much other shit that it was ridiculous.
So what I think I'm going to try to do for the rest of this month is post 1 storytime per DAY. At least up until we've covered everything up through before Countdown.
Today we'll be reading the very first Punisher Annual. Written by Mike Baron, this came out way back in the 80s, which I guess means that this was technically part of his original run. It also features a backup story by Roger Salick, plus some extras. The art in particular might be the best thing about the issue though. The main story was drawn by Mark Texeira, and the backup by the most classically styled but still underrated Mike Vosburg.
I'd guess that was just Baron trying to write a "cool looking action scene". Though I guess maybe he did used to be a LITTLE more athletic in general back in the day. Lots of "tucking and rolling" to get away from falls or explosions or other things like that. They used to emphasize his "special forces training" more back in the day.

And now for some backup thing that ran in a bunch of Annuals at the time that has nothing to do with the rest of the issue. I'm not even sure what the deal was with this as I haven't read the other parts.

Hunter Davis
It's interesting how both Mark Texeira and Bill Sienkiewicz started out as Neal Adams clones and then both turned into two of the most unique, most stylized, and most instantly recognizable artists in comics ever, not to mention being two of the best period.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

Why in the fuck was this page scanned so much larger than the others?
Dylan Ross
How could anyone not see that this is an obvious setup?
Xavier Ortiz
Fucking love these "Punisher Armory" style pages.
Zachary Green
I would unironically live there.

Does anybody remember what this was all about?
William Ross
Guy said so himself. He was desparate and had no better option.
Also he was stupid enough to get into this mess in the first place.

FOR ANYONE WONDERING WHAT THE STUFF ABOUT THE HIGH EVOLUTIONARY IN THIS ISSUE IS ABOUT:
This issue was part of one of Marvel first major "company events", called "The Evolutionary War" (you can see this of the cover as shown here: ).
"The Evolutionary War" ran in nearly all of Marvel's "Annuals" that year, most or all of which came out in the summer, so it only took a few months to read the whole thing.
Fortunately, this Punisher issue has basically NOTHING to do with the larger story, so it stands on its own pretty well.
The actual "event" itself was about The High Evolutionary being a shithead and the superheroes fighting him, or whatever, it doesn't really matter.
Elijah Garcia
Love the art in this.

>Does old Frank do a lot of gymnastics?
I don't remember when these books were released, I'd say the 80s, in which case Frank is not yet that old in them. With daily workout it's not impossible for him to be able to do those moves, provided his workout involves gymnastics-type training.

What did he mean by this? Is it a reference to a previous story?

>The High Evolutionary
I didn't see that coming. Will Frank try to get to the HE's moonbase and stop him?
Why weren't the people in the Eradicator armor weren't New Humans? HE doesn't work with ordinary people, and it would have confused Frank and the cartel people even more.
Jace Martin
Does The High Evolutionary have a moonbase? How many fucking things are built on the moon in Marvel?
Elijah Bell
He doesn't just have a moonbase, he has an entire replica of half the Earth on the dark side of the moon.
