Thoughts on Ready Player One?

It will be like Wreck-it Ralph, but it will also have comic/cartoon character cameos

even superman will be there!

>I saw the reference and I clapped: the motion picture

think I'll pass

Someone post *that* page

DON'T YOU DARE

I will watch it but fuck if it isn't going to be annoying people praising REFERENCES!!!!!!!!!! as if that was deep writting.

The story literally goes ''I was in a mission to save the world, my teammates were Leonardo from the Ninja Turtles, Gandalf and Optimus Prime, we needed to visit the Hogwarts'' or some shit like that

WB'S BIGGEST MOVIE OF 2018

They cut out Ultraman, Mecha Godzilla, Jap Spidey, and the other cool shit I would've cared about so I probably won't bother. The book was kinda shit regardless if I'm remembering right.

The only Superman that matters.

>they cut Ultraman
They better fucking not have. And yes, the book’s kinda shit, but it’s my guilty pleasure airplane book. Something about it makes it fun in a shitty ‘80s movie way.

Sadly they replaced Ultraman with Iron Giant apparently.

...

Huh?

...

I'm assuming this is a page from the book? Is it supposed to read like American Psycho?

I'm a big fan of Spielberg (including his modern works), but this just looks like shit.

AHAHAHAHAHA

Captain Janeway and the cute geeky girls playing ukeleles are the only women on this entire page

who's the rabbit on the left

It's WB it can't look like anything else

This isn't even remotely Sup Forums related.

You have a whole board to discuss this. Go back.

There's just something about the line about anime that makes me angry for some reason.

I think that's Jazz Jackrabbit?!

>

It's full of Sup Forums characters.

I don't want to go to Sup Forums. It's nothing but plebs and racist plebs.

The thing from Last Guardian

Oh shit I've never seen that edit that's gold

>This generation was the first to be raised online
I'm pretty sure that's bullshit.

There are like ten different *that* pages in the book man, your going to have to be more specific.

>It will be like Wreck-it Ralph, but fucking awful
FTFY

The joker looks fucking stupid in it

I can't believe this book is getting a movie. It's like the embodiment of white-beta nerd self-insert power wank. Sword Art Online has more dignity than this shit.

It will be complete cancer

what console is this releasing for

I think you’re confused user, this is obviously a new episode of Robot Chicken

>vosotros

wreck-it ralph was already awful

>SAO but with 80s/90s references: the book
>no a Spielberg movie
It's going to be shit. Not to mention that the book is awful, a literary Frankenstein monster, as far as themes and genres go.

This is literally my generation and subculture right here and I'm fucking nauseated. How many fifty year olds are they expecting to pack the theaters?

Based Butch

Nah, it's true. The children of Gen X and Millennials are the first to live their entire lives with the internet. Though, some younger Millennials probably share that trait.

Does it end with Mr. Rogers in a bloodstained sweater

I found it funny while he listed a bunch of authors, tv shows and movies, he was just like "oh yeah I read some comics too"

>Why everyone else was making movies, I studied the blade

Spain > half-breed natives

Who wouldn't want to study Blade, that's a great movie.

If Ready Player One was a cartoon that somebody didn't like the mods would've deleted this thread by now. Fortunately it's a live action movie adaptation of a book with no business whatsoever being on Sup Forums, so it can be discussed as much as you want.

It's really an interesting page, I should analyze it more.

It's fairly obvious that anime wasn't the author's strong suit. You could say that the guy that the MC is researching, Halliday, didn't have the chance to watch that many anime, but it's still really obvious how shallow that part is.
Not that everything else he listed is much more in-depth, but at least you might get the impression that this guy knows what he's talking about.

Glad to know I am not alone in thinking the book was underwhelming. It's sad to think that I felt more hype with southpark's immaginationland than this cash grab.

My favorite part of Ready Player One was when Player One did a roundhouse kick and took out a whole room.

>lists two dozen authors
>lists a whole bunch of films
>Star Wars and Indy both get extra callouts
>lists 10 directors
>including fucking Kevin Smith for some reason
>John Hughes gets a special shoutout
>whole paragraph on monty python
>details about several TV shows
>oh and Japan shit too
>Bill Hicks gets namedropped
>touch a little bit on music, list a handful of bands
>special notice to call out an obscure band

>the entire medium of comic books relegated to a single sentence

That annoys me more than it should. He spends the whole page referencing the most obvious shit from the 80s. But he couldn't even bother to mention a single comic book that he would've read. WATCHMEN came out in the 80s for fuck's sake, he couldn't at least mention that? Claremont's X-Men, Year One and DKR, Arkham Asylum, COIE, Miller's DD, Secret Wars, Black Suit Spidey... you don't even have to know anything about comic books to figure out some major shit that was happening back then.

And it looks like the extent of comics shit we'll be getting in the movie is fucking Joker and Harley.

Thing is it's hard to tell if he actually likes the characters in the stuff he's talking about. Like googling around I found one scene where he refers to all these anime mechs (he calls the Evangelions mechs and I hate it) and it makes it more seem like they're part of his power fantasy than anything else.

And the sequel will be even worse.

Probably the first 100% raised online, although you could make the argument for millennials being raised in the years where it mattered.

It's okay, he compensates later by writing a poem about how he hates sexist, alpha-male driven porn and wants "geek porn" that values women much better.

>Sup Forums hates based Spielberg because he made a WB movie
Nice criteria, bro.

All I need to know is if it passes the Bechdel test. If so, I'm in love!

But they don't have MCUx.

>Not that everything else he listed is much more in-depth
I'm not sure ANYTHING was in depth. I'm pretty sure Cline just picked the first thing that came to his mind for each category. Some dumb shit that stands out to me...

>Jackson
Nothing against Peter Jackson, but aside from LotR which was already mentioned, he doesn't belong on that list
>specifically shits on Crystal Skull
real solid opinion there
>Kevin Smith
...why?
>Monty Python
Objectively great, but there's more to British comedy than MP.
>From the Police to Journey to REM to the Clash I tackled it all
>They Might Be Giants & Devo
No, if that's your list, you haven't tackled shit. It's as if he asked his friend to name five 80s bands and just wrote down what came out. TMBG is a bit more obscure, so I guess he's got that going for him.
>Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Pink Floyd
Oh, I guess his friend decided to name 10 bands

Then he's got that Midnight Oil line, which is actually a pretty decent line, but it just feels excessive after listing all that normie shit. Take out the unnecessary lists and that actually works really well as an aside.

I think it's suppoesd to be Rocket

>nerd culture becomes popular
>make movie about nerd culture
truly the darkest of timelines

>Thoughts on Ready Player One?
Its literally an isekai for americans

I'm a millennial (I think... 1988?), and we've had the internet since I was 4 in 1992. I'd say I've been online effectively my entire life, but I wasn't quite "raised online." It probably wasn't until high school that I felt like I could really do everything online like listed in that image.

>mfw the half in the bag episode of this

NOW IN YOUTUBE FORM
Youtube.com/watch?v=cSp1dM2Vj48

if it weren't for everything else WB is putting out next year I would say this will be the biggest bomb of 2018

I'm calling it now, it will be a joke episode like Movie 43 or Grown-Ups 2. They will anticipate the AT-ST memes and catch them off-guard.

if nerd culture is popular , what happens to the nerds? does a double nerd culture emerge?

Elitists/anyone who goes too deep.

you're in the double nerd culture. We like the same things the normalfags do but ironically and sometimes we choose slightly more obscure versions.

It's called *chan culture. Like nerd culture but bitter and cynical instead of pretending to be, with actual detached irony instead of "detached irony".

>Nerd Culture References and Nostalgia: The Movie
No.

Someone post the masturbation monologue.

>It's called *chan culture. Like nerd culture but bitter and cynical instead of pretending to be, with actual detached irony instead of "detached irony".

You meme how teenagers and facebook casuals took dank memes and thought dank memes always have to be edgy and grossly offensive.

Did i see Battletoads in that trailer?

Probably

>I will watch it but fuck if it isn't going to be annoying people whining about REFERENCES!!!!!!!!!! as if that was a valid complaint

But it is. Excessive references in a piece of fiction can ruin immersion. A plot + excessive references just straight up isn't a story, it's masturbating on a page.

As you wish.

It is Willy Wonka and the Isekai Factory.

Wasn't the entire point supposed to be that the MC and his friends were complete fucking losers, just like all the other sad sacks that are elites in the OASIS? The villain wanted to shut the game off because everyone was such a waste that they just spent their entire day-to-day lives in it while the world wasted away.

Marche was right.

The book can’t decide what it thinks about the OASIS. One second it’s this beautiful wonderland, the next Cline’s telling you it’s probably why the real world is falling apart. The book ends with our kid hero being given control of a kill switch for the damn thing.

What the fuck is his leg

I do wonder how many nerds with no life whose only value in their eyes is to be "nerd" would feel offended by this movie about a nerd with no life whose only value in his eyes is to be "nerd".

It would be a great time to be around if only for Sup Forums's tears.

>“I wish someone had just told me the truth right up front, as soon as I was old enough to understand it. I wish someone had just said: “Here’s the deal, Wade. You’re something called a ‘human being.’ That’s a really smart kind of animal. Like every other animal on this planet, we’re descended from a single-celled organism that lived millions of years ago. This happened by a process called evolution, and you’ll learn more about it But trust me, that’s really how we all got here. There’s proof of it everywhere, buried in the rocks. That story you heard? About how we were all created by a super-powerful dude named God who lives up in the sky? Total bullshit. The whole God thing is actually an ancient fairy tale that people have been telling one another for thousands of years. We made it all up. Like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. “Oh, and by the way … there’s no Santa Claus or Easter Bunny. Also bullshit. Sorry, kid Deal with it.”
>― Ernest Cline, Ready Player One

>I don't want to go to Sup Forums. It's nothing but plebs and racist plebs.
So it's your first day in Sup Forums I assume.

Don't forget the atheism and why is he skinny he supposed to be fat.

You shut your whore mouth.

It’s basically a live action version of that old drug awareness cartoon with the Turtles, Alf and Slimer

I mean, it's kinda both. In a much more functional society like today's, the OASIS would be the coolest shit ever to fuck around in. In the 2040s or so when the world has gone to shit and people live in stacked RVs, it's the complete last thing that should be hitting the public.

The big point of the book was that the OASIS was great as a game, but it was essentially the main reason why the Earth had completely stagnated in development and failed to recuperate in any meaningful capacity. I remember that at the end, the three MCs said they were gonna use all the money to help the planet get its shit together.

Also it makes complete sense for the MC to be a bitter, cynical ass, given that he lives in a junkyard and the normal living quarters for the human race.

Yeah, tell us again how awesome "la patrulla X" "lobezno" and "estela plateada" sound.
Bloody gilipollas

>but it was essentially the main reason why the Earth had completely stagnated in development and failed to recuperate in any meaningful capacity.

Yeah well, they elected Wil Wheaton as the US president so they were doomed to failure and deserved it.

SO THIS ONE TIME ME AND ALF WERE SITTING IN THE DELOREAN PLAYING CONNECT FOUR WHEN OSCAR THE GROUCH CAME AND TOOK ALL OUR RECESS PIECES (JUST LIKE IN E.T.: THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL).

SO OSCAR ALMOST GOT AWAY BUT THEN GABE NEWELL SHOWED UP AND GAVE US A REAL LIFE PORTAL GUN, SO WE CAUGHT HIM AND THEN WE ALL WENT BACK TO MY PLACE TO WATCH SOME GARGOYLES ON DISNEY AFTERNOON.

The worst part about this shit is that I believe you. Not even gonna fact check. I believe these are the depths he would sink to. Does he make his State of the Union address from a porn set couch too?

oh what the fuck, how do I not remember that?

>GABE NEWELL SHOWED UP AND GAVE US A REAL LIFE PORTAL GUN
>not Gordon Freeman
this made me fucking chuckle my dick off

>not a VF blasting jpop
Why bother?

So this is that one annoying guy who compares everything he sees to something he's watched or played in movie form.

WB must really hate Pacific Rim since PR2 is coming out the week before this.
