I dunno what it was that killed the Canadian animation industry. The subsidized funds had been going on for decades and the collapse didn't really happen until the 2000s. Was it the adoption of the Flash program that made animation so cheap and easy to produce in conjunction with the government paying for everything that orchestrated the utter destruction of the Canadian animation industry?

Nothing "killed" it, Canadian cartoons were never good. They just went from somewhat tolerable to outright bad, because Canada follows each and every single US trend except a few years behind.

Canada is very proudly on the side of socialism; they WANT the government to pay for everything and ultimately run every aspect of their industries and lives, up to and including the arts. And these are the kinds of "arts" you get when the government pays for it. Canadian flashtoons.

Canada also socialized their healthcare and look at how well that worked out for them. Now any Canadian who needs a life-saving operation actually flies to the United States to have it done, because the wait times in Canada are so long they'd die before making their appointment.

Every animation studio in Canada does a substantial amount of service work, enough to keep them afloat. If they're not making a Canadian show, they're storyboarding an American show or animating commercials.

Canada should move to a European model to fix that. But of course you support tearing it down entirely instead...

Actually, it's because Canadian VAs don't get residuals, so it saves a ton of money on the backend.

Notice that when non-union VAs in New York and Texas rose to prominence in the 2000s, the American animation industry moved away from Canadians VAs almost completely. Because the non-union VAs were even CHEAPER as well as easier to exploit.

Yes, but in the form of alternate dubs done strictly for the Canadian market. Like how there were two English dubs of Dragonball Z that ran simultaneously, the Ocean Dub in Canada and the Funimation dub in the US.

They didn't NEED to dub the show, since there was an English dub already being made in the US, but the Canadian VAs needed the fucking work. Now, almost zero anime is dubbed in Canada unless it's an alternate version with Canadian VAs. Pretty much all anime dubs are done by non-union American VAs in New York. Sometimes there's a bit of bleed from Toronto, since they're right next door, but that's all they get.

This past year Ocean dubbed Gintama, Beyblade Burst, World Trigger and Kiznaiver most recently.

The Ocean Dub of DBA post Frieza Saga was done because the Funimation dub was really, REALLY bad and substandard even by anime dub quality in 1998. There was a major negative reaction to it when we switched from the original Ocean Dub of the Saiyan/Namek Saga to the Frieza Saga with the Funi cast. So to keep DBZ profitable in Canada, they produced the Ocean Dub starting with the Android Saga and it got the ratings back up in Canada.

Sadly, it also means that there's a big chunk of episodes of DBZ (the whole Frieza Saga and the Garlic Junior Saga) that were never dubbed by the Ocean Group, because that was when we tried airing the Funi dub in Canada and it flopped.

MLP has great voice work but Johnny Test hell no.

Being American, I never watched these channels, but from what I've gleaned on Internet forums, most think they went downhill around 2005-2007 - which very eerily mirrors the time American kids' channels also went downhill according to most.
