The begging of Season 4 made me want to stop watching. Why did this show turn to shit?

Keep watching the season. Overall the quality has dropped a bit but S4 has, hands down, the best episode of the entire series.

Because it would be far too aggressively depressing if it wasn't comedic. A lot of the premises and characters in BJHM are inherently quite cartoon, but twisted to make it "real", ie consequential. Why do you think that comedy and tragedy can't go well together, anyway? The contrast is a highlighting feature between the two. They play off one and other. The vibrantness is part of what makes it engaging.

Season 4 scenes that focus on Bojack, Holly, and Bojack's mom are some of the best in the entire series.

Conversely, scenes that focus on Todd or Diane are some of the worst in the entire series.

This is exactly right.

agreed... holy fuck was season 4 great

Season 4 made it painfully obvious that the writers have zero fucking clue what to do with Todd and they've run out of shit to do with Diane as well.

Which one? Ruthie?

Ruthie fucked me, personally, up a lot. But the one that hit closest to home and worked best was Time's Arrow.

whichever one had bojack's depression voices telling him he was a fucking asshole the entire time

The stuff with Bojack was a lot better than the B stories this season, but it too was lacking something.
There was no arc and there was no pay off for us knowing Bojack's mom's history. There were lots of ways they could have tied it all together. But it just get fell flaccid.

Stop hating on Todd. It's nice that there is one character who isn't iradeemably disturbed or broken.

Todd himself was fine.
It was the forced "Public Service Announcement" about asexuals
>Hello. We are asexual but we are like everyone else. We still love and have feelings. We just don't like having sex.
It was like that but without the irony

Nobody is hating on Todd. We're hating that the writers have no idea what story they're trying to tell with Todd.

I actually think Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter are one of the arcs that a very deep and I've only learned to appreciate that in recent years when living your life with a partner becomes a topic that is more present than ever.

But yeah, it was not a great season for Todd.

To be fair, you have to have a very high iq to understand Bojack Horseman.

i'm still hoping the bring back sebastian st claire

The only problem with Diane and Mr. peanut butter is that its no different than the last season. A lot of shit happens in their story line yet they've effectively gone nowhere.

Isn't this what marriage is?

The biggest problem for the D/PB storyline this season was that it wasted such a good premise.
The race for governor was a perfect wedge to place between them.
Instead, it just happened then fizzled out with neither character affecting the outcome.

What should have happened is that Diane purposefully sabotage's Mr PB's campaign because she's jealous that he gets to be successful and important without any effort while she's worked so hard and hasn't got anything to show for it. Wanting to be special is a big part of her character. She's not like her dumb family. She's special and important and smart. Mr PB's casual success throws that back in her face.
So Diane should have used her blog to sell personal dirt on Mr PB, which causes them to lose, which causes an actual fucking conflict where the characters have agency.

Is there a good reason to watch this show? Every time I hear about it, it's always followed by how depressing or miserable it is. And I'm not into misery porn shows.

It's also pretty funny.

It can be but stagnation isn't the problem Diane is having and impressing that upon the viewer is a terrible idea as it's just wasting a season's worth of development.

Yeah, basically everything Diane, Mr. Peanutbutter and Todd came short this season. Which is sad. Also, the story lines didn't intersect as much this season. I hope they fix this next season. But the BoJack, Holly, and BoJack's mom story line really makes up for everything.

Some top tier humor, plenty of cleverly placed animal puns, etc.

i lost it with the grasshopper joke. i wasn't expecting it at all.

I love the humor. what I don't like is the very few but utterly unforgivable times they let warped moralizing interfere with what is meant to be an 'everyone is terrible' story

It's not entirely misery porn. A lot of it is actually real life lessons.

Very true. Diane and PB have gone nowhere for a very long time. There is plenty that could be done with them but nothing seriously major has happened since season 1 and 2. Diane especially had a lot of potential, seeing as she was such a prominent character in season 1 against Bojack. Did they even talk to each other once in s4? Diane could easily be written as the main protagonist now that Bojack has been explored so much.

fucking todd, fuck me i hate tod soooo much i wish he would die after a wack scheme back fires and the gay mafia kills him
Diane and Mr peanut butter comes in a close second

she made me pro-fucking life
they way she treat mr peanut butter still rustled my jimmies. im no peanutbutter fan but i hate when women treat good men like shit

If the wacky humor annoys you, how did you get through 3 seasons? It's not like Season 4 introduced this, it's been in every season released.

The only part I laughed at in that episode was the quick "it's true asshole!" scene, the rest gave a few smirks

Season 4 is for sure the last season I'm watching. Hollyhock was annoying, we were led to believe that she was just fucked up and weird because her first action was chloroforming I think Todd a few times, and yet later when she's separating change and watching TV dazed that was supposed to signify to Bojack that she had been taking pills. Also, they kept trying to give her jokes and playing up the sympathy card but it just wasn't working, I cared because I wanted Bojack to make it work with her, but I didn't like the character herself.

Diane was way fucking worse in this season too, from the gun episode, to the fracking episode, to giving her insanely obnoxious lines that I've mentioned before. The end with her getting infuriated that Peanutbutter did that ballroom thing was the last straw but I wish they did it sooner so I could've dropped it sooner, rather than tagging it at the very end.

Making beatrice incredibly sympathetic and playing up the sexist card using a time in history when lobotomies were the smartest thing humans knew what to do with a "sick" person was a low move for the sake of. The only bit I liked was when Bojack sat with her in the room describing where they "were", but the rest I was just fucking hoping she was faking it, but that was around the start of the season. The situation itself was sad but paired with Beatrice it didn't work for me.

Then there was Todd who was actually fine with me around the start of the series, but this season was fucking brutal with him. It's not just REEEEEE ASEXUALS but that whoever decided to write his lines either lost what made him at least serviceable or didn't write him before and were new. But I do hate how forced and reoccurring the asexual bit was, for an adult series it was preachy as shit, I could see a teen sitcom spelling it out to viewers but adults know that shit and the only people who would enjoy his humorless arc are the asexuals/lgbt+ people who like the media representation, IE pandering.

You forgot one
>Making it Furry Trash

Humor and depression go hand in hand. It's probably not something you'd really understand.

Was Hollyhock a donotsteal? She seemed like it.

I'm pretty sure that literally the entire reason the series exists, why the main character is a horse, and why he's depressed, the joke behind all of everything about Bojack Horseman is "Why the long face?"

Huh, here I was thinking it was a gag on beating a dead horse

>there was no arc, no closure
I don't think you understand the show very well.

That is quite literally the point.

>people complaining things dont get wrapped up
>people complaining that PB and Diane aren't changing with each escapade
>people complaining that hollyhock was a boring normie with depression
Holy shit, how do you get through 4 seasons of a show without understanding it in any capacity? The contrast of life's endless struggles and people's real behavior to the sitcom reality Bojack desires drives the entire fucking show.

People don't learn their lessons. Things don't end. Things don't wrap up neatly. You cannot reach perpetual happiness.

needs more princess carolyn

...

It's a Mr Ed joke. You know, the show about the talking horse?
