That's not true at all, it's VERY obvious that someone thought of this as soon as A New Hope when Han Solo explains the calculations bit and wondered "what happens" so you're very wrong. Then they realized they can't do it as soon as they revealed fighters can have hyperdrives or they have to make it so week it's not a feasible weapon.

The controversy stems from how the film handled Luke and Snoke. Luke isn't even TLJ's fault, for the most part. I would have preferred Luke to hang around and restart his Jedi school with Rey's help, if only because putting Rey in Luke's old position is incredibly lazy. But, again, TFA already started that.
The movie's bigger problems revolve mostly around the subplots and Kylo's development being so boring after what TFA set up.
