The Yui daughter thing was a bit odd, but hey... Japan. I didn't see anything wrong with Asuna and kirito. They had the beginnings of the relationship and they experienced stuff together and their change in characters allowed the character development to result in romance.
My fabourite thing about the first arc is the brutality of it and the depiction of people just trying to survive in the mmo, while others risk their lives to escape. There's also a lot of accosication media going on tehre since I play mmos, I can relate to a lot of what happened in SAO.
Second arc was just way too "rushed" and inconsequential for me. Second season was alright, but it didn't have the worldbuilding that the first had, so that pulled me out of it.
