What is homestuck and why is their fanbase so weird?

Homestuck is an oddly formatted webcomic that began in 2009 and ended recently and slowly went downhill.

It's fanbase is weird because it's a combination of people who've been around since the start and enjoyed the earlier raunchier humor and (better) storytelling, and tumblr kids who only like it because of the gays. There's so many fucking things in this comic that they don't like or goes against their beliefs but they act like it's the best shit regardless, meanwhile the oldfags who like a good chunk of the comic and only think the writing went to shit near the end and they all hate it.

The people who think the writing went downhill hate it.

The people who a vast majority of the comic goes against their beliefs love it.

I don't fucking get it.

Thanks matey. I was wondering about this sometime ago aswell, just too lazy to research it in depth on my own

It literally the msot reddit shit ever created, more reddit than reddit itself

Also it got a large tumblr fandom since the creator turned everyone gay

Honestly the first 5 acts are pretty solid, it's just Act 6 where the writing takes a bit of a nosedive and it culminates in a really disappointing ending. Though Act 6 also features probably the most entertaining character in the whole comic so there's a small bright side at least.

Elaborating on what I said about the tumblr fanbase, in the comic there's this entire alien society that's totally morally corrupt and has no qualms with murder or any of that shit, but it's tumblr fans tend to sweep that all under the rug entirely. There's a meh spinoff point and click game that recently revealed a new character who's pants were coated in blood cause y'know, they kill and shit. But I legit saw posts on tumblr of people saying "maybe it's just paint" and "what if she's not a killer" like goddamn, this is their whole society, why do you like this shit if the very idea of any of them being murderers makes you uncomfortable? And yeah I know it's my fault for going on tumblr in the first place but I need to get my fanart fix somewhere.

wrong

Oh and I should also warn you that if this thread doesn't get deleted it's just going to become a homestuck shitposting thread, because mods or at least one of them hate homestuck with a passion and usually delete homestuck threads, so if this thread doesn't get deleted whatever's left of homestuck's fan/hatebase on here is gonna take whatever they can get and come crawling over here.

As a Homestuck oldfag who found MSPA when Bard's Quest was being made and canned I don't hate Homestuck. I hate Hussie and all his Jew friends.

If I make it to AX this year and Hussie has the fucking nerve to show up and do the irony
shtick I swear I would have to use every bit of my willpower to not up and backhand his stupid face.

I don't even care that I'd have to fight through an army of fourteen year olds after. He is a scam artist and the most condescendingly detached cult of personality I've ever seen.

Blame Hetalia, for real.

Wow so tuff

People too young for it got into it for the shipping and made it into a lifestyle instead of a piece of media.

Huh, no wonder why suddenly that one thread about HB shipping Tavros and Vriska suddenly disappeared.

I am not a Tumblr user, I read Act I in 2009 and the rest in 2017, and I don't hate it. I think it wasn't the unsatisfying ending that pissed off the oldfags so much, but being made to wait. For an archive reader even late Act 6 is tolerable. Sure, you end up disappointed at all the untied loose ends and wasted potential, but not enough to negate your enjoyment of Acts 1-5. To me Homestuck's quality just went from B to a solid A to C- or D at worst, averaging out at C. For them, it's an F.

has there ever been something similar to this happening?
I know really famous celebrities, like actual household names have been "assassinated" because the person wanted easy fame, but has there ever been a case of slightly famous person like hussie getting killed just because they were in public and someone upset about the content they produced just fucking killed them?

I think you're absolutely right, and the drop in quality is mostly because the author decided he was DONE no matter what he had to do to end it, so every character says a parting paragraph in a parade of "payoff" then the actual ending happens and it's done all at once.

You are correct that the massive delays were a separate issue that added to displeasure with the whole thing, but I really don't think the sheer waste of potential and lack of care for the narrative and characters in the final acts should be downplayed.

I mean, beyond just "ruining muh webcomic" he also cost a good deal of his employees to lose their jobs because he's just such an epic memelord.

...

He generally fucks everything up.

It's not about tough, I just think it's insane that he spent so long being so nontransparent and just dismissive over everything and then when he does go out in public trying to be le ironic it's like the biggest fuck you. The fact that it's intentionally only through emissaries like $helby makes it even worse.

>kill
That's a bit intense for irony lad I was just gonna give im a slap

Did you not like Hussie's neokosmos art

Edgelord alert

There's definitely more issues than just "people had to wait a long time and things didn't get resolved." Besides the latter complaint being a gigantic fucking flaw, theres also just the writing in general. Genuinely good characters like Slick get fucked aside to make way for the gay Strider bros. and once good characters like Terezi or Vriska wind up bastardized versions of themselves under the guise of "character development". There's countless pointless plot threads that make absolutely no sense for someone who desperately wants to wrap things up. The retcon arc, obviously. But also the dancestors and the 3 in-universe years of fuck all happening.

People who actually want an explanation:

Webcomic formatted like a CYOA game that takes advantage if it being digital to do weird shit with dialog, animation, and causality.

Story is about a group of four kids that play a cursed video game called Sburb that winds up destroying Earth, Jumanji-style, and they have to beat it to get it back. Fun is poked at how absurd and obtuse the game's rules are.

Best known for the Trolls, grey skinned aliens. The author spends a bunch of time describing and characterizing their culture. Each one is based on a formula so making fan characters got popular. Eventually the narrative neglected the humans in favor of the Trolls, much to people's frustration.

It's more that they started latching onto it for its nearly nonexistent queer elements, and it cultivated a fanbase of annoying fujos

>Eventually the narrative neglected the humans in favor of the Trolls
>Neglected the humans
Literally every human Derse dreamer is over developed.
>In favor of the trolls
Literally every troll Derse dreamer is under developed, along with some Prospit dreamers.

And Karkat amounted to nothing.

The only character who ever amounted to anything was /ourguy/ Caliborn

His entire character resolution was getting to fuck Dave's asshole. How uplifting!

He didn't even get that. You can remove him, and literally nothing changes

I just wish it had ended better. I could forgive act 6 if it didn't just....stop.

>The main villain of Homestuck turned out to be an edgeLORD child that got to live his power fantasy
If he wasn't born a Gary Stu i'd probably compliment it on being realistic.

I wasn't advocating for it or being edgy, I was just wondering if it had happened before.
although I admit, someone killing B^Uckley because his comic is trash would be kind of funny.

I'm completely out of touch with the "larger" fandom. How relevant is this to peoples interests?

Well fuck me, can't even cross-board post properly

Yet he was still the best part

That's the joke though, the unstoppable force that haunted them the whole comic turns out to be a whiny and not very intelligent child.

Once there was an insanely productive webcartoonist named Andrew Hussie.

His insane productivity attracted an equally insane following.

That man is gone, now, but echoes of what he was and what he made still remain in ever-shrinking dark corners of the internet populated by obsessive teenagers. The end.

He's autistic, not stupid

Yeah you might be right. He always struck me as pretty dumb, but it's certainly never made the focus of his scenes.

Reminder that being John is suffering

I genuinely thought that the downfall of the comic was going to be a twist of Caliborn using his control of the comic to re-write it. This lined up with Davekat, Jade being alone for three years thinking she killed her brother and boyfriend, and Jane's own father ignoring her completely for John, who he has never met before and the version he did meet was his own father. As well as Caliborn's art skills (slowly) improving over time and even one of his earlier drawings being the outline for a scene in the ending flash.
And then the ending flash finished and I felt a bit of dread. And then the snaps happened and blew everything I thought was going on out of the water so I guess they really did push Lord English into a blackhole or something.

The spritesquareds also line up pretty well with Caliborn's idea of "character development". They're basically trickster mode 2.0.

>suffering
He's too busy jumping around at suicidal choices like a retard, but that's okay because he will be replaced by another identical clone anyway who give a fuck about dying?

How fucking strong would it have been if the last scene panned out to Caliborn with MSPaint open on a computer, drawing it?
Ignoring the fact that it was a flash animation just because Caliborn's pure art skills are just that strong now.

well shit
means to

So what lord english wanted? I still don't get it what was his goal at all.

He's up obsessed with overly complicating things, but can pull off stupidly complex plans, and he's actually rather eloquent, if blunt. high int, zero wis, but because he likes doing it the hard way. Remember how he talks in ALL caps by holding the shift key because he thinks caps lock is for weaklings

Might have saved the comic a little. Slick's death would make sense too.

He wants to kill and fuck your sister, but mostly he just really really really likes breaking shit.

Reminder that the Midnight Crew is dead and burning in hell along with AR for being a bunch of heterosexual men who reinforce a harmful stereotype and are misogynistic towards women.

...

Well besides being almost as obsessed with violence as Jack Noir, his main motivation is to double-kill all existing versions of his sister to ensure that he'll live forever. That's why he destroys all the dream bubbles and maybe why he killed the author, who was dressed as his sister's OC at the time

I think he wanted to destroy any trace of his sister because he hated her that much.
He was also an amalgam of Equius, Gamzee, Not-Dirk, and Caliborn so he may of just hated existing but also couldn't die. I can't imagine having to share a body with even one of those individuals, anyway.

The Midnight Crew and AR weren't twee and emasculate enough.

My sister?

A better question is...why is Andrew wearing a Dark Angels shirt?

Everyone's sister. Why do you think it's Jade English?

That's a sepulchritude shirt

I doubt he plays it.

The first porn of Homestuck was gay MNC porn

>Galaxy Pants
>Minion shirt
Oddly, I feel nothing.

No one does, not anymore.

...

Can we all agree that Vriska is the 8est character?

vriska's morbid, morbid snuff fetish

I fixed it.

Do trolls even have noses? I don't recall that detail.

Can I just say that I enjoy your art? It conveys a broken man, beginning to become a fallen hero and villain, quite well.
