If you're writing an action series and your characters are all passive basement slackers, you're likely doing it wrong. A slice-of-life series with action in the background may be better suited for them, but they won't be compelling and and interesting to stick around with.

Essentially the biggest problem with talking animal stories is they treat what you are as somehow important, rather than who you are. As soon as animals can talk, they stop being animals and start being people. Everything else becomes irrelevant. If you have only one animal that talks and none of the others do, it's extremely sloppy and lazy writing to have everyone continue to treat them like the literally-dumb animals. Lookin' at you, Family Guy. If on the other hand all the animals talk but they still live the lives we're familiar with animals living (being essentially homeless, lacking any kind of agency about the existence they are aware of having), it's more of a misguided setting or premise. Good example of this would be Charlotte's Web.
