Maus

So I just ordered Maus for $11 on Amazon. What am I in for? I've been tentatively interested in it for a while, and this just seemed like too good of a deal to pass on.

This video really made me fascinated by the technical aspects of Maus. I know opening up a thread on Sup Forums-occupied Sup Forums about a topic so heavily and apologetically Jewish is asking for trouble, but does anyone have anything else to say about what makes it such an important work of the medium?

unapologetically* autocorrect.

As a non-Sup Forumsfag, you're in for a pretty harrowing holocaust story paired up with a very human portrayal of the authors father. His dad is pretty much every Jewish stereotype rolled into one, and he did an excellent job of being faithful to that and not really pulling any punches about it. If you like black and white art it's also a bit of a treat.

As a jew, I have to say its really amazing, but I feel like it demands to be read back to back with Maus 2, since to me they feel like 2 halves of the same story that spans generations.

Its a great portrayel of how the holocaust trained surviving jews to act in certain ways which created and fed the most common jewish stereotypes. It also shows how something like the holocaust can have unexpected ripples across generations.

Most importantly, though, its about how hard it is to accept our family members and truly love them, and how we never see anyone’s full life, just the fraction of it we are exposed to.

It has a lot of feels.
The art is okay.

Anja is cute!

If they made an animated movie out of it, Disney/Pixar would finally lose the Oscar.

I should try it again, cause the last time I tried to read it I was cured of insomnia

Unironically the most accurate depiction of the Holocaust with Art's father being a massive racist asshole and a generally utterly unlikable person.

t. great-grandmother used to call people who published memoirs about surviving concentration camps dupki (Polish word for asshole). She was a 12 year old Jewish girl who got put on Kindertransport to England weeks before the war began.

Spiegelman has been dead set against a film adaptation, or any other sort of adaptation from the start.

Spiegelman spends a lot of the book 8 feet up his own ass but when he gets his own irrelevant problems out of the way of the story, it's good

There's no way you could adapt this into a movie. Not with how Jewed Hollywood is. The script would either be rejected as being too disparaging of Jews or would have to be gutted.

>POLES ARE SUBHUMEN, GERMANS ARE MONSTERS BASICALLY ONLY JEWS ARE HUMAN BEINGS
That's what you're in for.

It's more that Art is a guy who REALLY believes in comics as a medium. He's been offered a ton of creative control over a potential movie and his attitude has always been "I don't want it to be a movie because it should be read as a comic." He's just a very particular sort of person.

Awesome, I'm excited to read it. Kinda crazy how well this thread has turned out so far - was expecting a lot worse.

>Book about being a Jew during the Holocaust
>"MUH GERMANS AND POLES ARE BAD GUYS"
Honestly, what were you expecting?

congrats on outing yourself as a fucking moron
I know it's bait

Don't expect a happy end.

Storytime it, OP. I haven't read it yet either.

It'll get worse if it stays up, I'm glad you got genuine answers before that happened.
Have fun readin user

You can never help yourself can you Sup Forums?

your in for one hell of a story

>What am I in for?
a lot of grimdark art that would probably be furry if it wasn't so grim dark.
a lot of "heck yeah Jews" and a lot of "even the best goyim are brutes." The Nazis are cats (and evil) and the Americans are dogs (and rather brutish).
story wise its pretty well put together, but depending on one's research I wouldn't count on it to give you an accurate picture of what actually happened.

It will certainly give you insight in the minds of generations of Jews that came later who were fed such stories since childhood about what the holocaust and wwii was like. So while it might not be the "truest" of stories, it will tell you the most "believed" story.

Are you being intentionally vague so as to trigger someone into accusations of holocaust denial? Cause you're being super vague about something.

>implying

no, i'm being vague because I can't remember a book I read twelve years ago and didn't particularly care about at the time.

Why do people go out of their way to ask "WHAT AM I IN FOR??" instead of just reading/watching the thing and then going for a discussion afterwards?

That explains why you think it was a "heck yeah jews" story.
Dude rips his dad apart, to the point of wondering if he should even publish it

Why do people go out of their way to bitch about exceedingly common behavior, as if complaining will do anything to change that behavior?

Just bought this (had an earlier copy, but lost it somehow).

Its beautiful, but also kind of sad this is the only way the public at large relates to Holocaust victims.

>why do people discuss things they themselves admit they are tenuously interested in but have just spent $11 dollars on?
>why would someone who just purchased a comic come to a comic message board to discuss comics?

You should read something more grounded in reality

what's this?

You know, you can be anti-Israel and not be a dumb fucking holocaust denier too.
Themoreyouknow

He outright shows that jews were pretty much eating each other alive to get ahead, it's just about the only holocaust story I've seen that acknowledges that the Jewish Ghetto Police were a thing.

>you can be critical of a Jewish ethostate but not of Jews themselves

No one said that.
Do you just make up stuff to argue with usually, or only when you're being BTFO?

If I remember the comic showed at least one non-Jew to be a prisoner in a concentration camp. What a progress. Soon we're be able to tell everyone the truth that the occupation was just as harsh for everyone.

>reasoning with tripfags
You're right I was mistaken.

welcome to Jewish logic

this is about the level of smarts i'd expect from a namefag.

>you're a tripfag so I'm not a moron even though I have no argument
Yeah OK kid

Whos denying the holocaust? Sacco gives an historical account based in interviews and an investigation, he is a journalist. Spiegelman gives a feels over feels nice and cute fiction loosely based on his family's history.

In the beginning of the ocupation sionists in "Israel" hated holocaust survivors and publicly shamed them as cowards for not resisting the genocide. Nowadays they pretend themselves as heroic survivors which is completely falseT

Theres absolutely no relation whatsoever between hating sionism and denying the holocaust.

You don’t even know the difference between a namefag and a tripfag
Just sayin

>"you don't have to deny holocaust"
>so i guess i can't criticise jews, huh??????
you're either retarded or a Sup Forumsdrone.

>has to respond to every post

>thinking there's a difference.

>ignoring the fact that Jews are untouchables in our society
>you can openly deny the holodomor but not the holocaust is some western countries

>if you wish to know who owns you, look to whom you cannot criticize

No quote is more unsettling than that.

As a matter of fact, many descendants of real survivors of the holocaust have turned into academics that denounce the ethnic jew sionist myth, like Shlomo Sand or denounce sionist crimes against humanity, like Norman Finkelstein.

Not even at Sup Forums is everyone a stormfag Sup Forumstard and Sup Forums is still full of thinking people.

Mate, do not drag one people's oppression in here to devalue another's. You don't care about the Palestinian's lives, you're just an antisemitic prick.

Fucking hell, man. Have some shame.

>you're either retarded or a Sup Forumsdrone.

>oy vey goy! don't talk about their suffering, you don't care about them, you're only doing it because you hate jews and want to make us-I mean them look bad!

>All Jews support the Israeli occupation
Go fuck yourself.

Dude, yeah, Footnotes in Gaza is an important book, and HELL yes, it, and the story of Palestine as a whole, deserves more recognition. But you know damn well there's a loaded reason it was posted in this thread, and it is just plain antisemitism.

Jews are hardly untouchable in your society, and the US has no laws against Holocaust denial.

The worst antisemitic pricks in the world are sionist and their supporters like u m8. In the eyes of the world they´ve turned what once was an ancestral culture full of wisdow, philosophy and art into a grotesque monster that publicly tortures children amongst another thousand horrible crimes.

I was just shillin for Sacco man he is highly unknown and underrated while everyone reads Maus all day long

>not all
Found the Jew.

>and we fall back to name calling
Sad. And low energy.

OY
VEY

Dude, I'm not a zionist, and you're using an accusatory and indirect "they" a lot.

There's a wide world of difference between a New York Jew, son of a Holocaust survivor, and an Israeli Jew, who lives in an apartment next to a division wall where people are tortured at night.

Stop being lead by the reductionist, antisemitic rhetoric you see on this fucking autistic hellsite.
The first Free Palestine protest I went to was when I was 13, and the first speaker was a Jewish woman, a community leader, challenging the Israeli regime.

It is not revolutionary or daring to kick the fucking Jews, you idiots.

Irish Catholic, but sure, oy vey, whatever.

>how to instantly prove you're a Sup Forumstard, the post

>I've been found out, even though I made no effort to hide it
Worst Jew ever.

I think I'm gonna go grab this off the shelf and re read it.
Also gonna check out footnotes from Gaza, because as stated, you don't have to be a mouth breathing holocaust denier to know Israel is a pretty shit country with a history of violent oppression all their own.

>how to prove you're a (((Jew))), the post
Jew posting really has gone down hill since they lost all their government funding.

I like how it still never presented a real argument, just called people jews.
What do you things do to afford interest access anyways?

It moved me to tears. I appreciated the candor and sincerity in the author and their dedication to telling a story exactly how it was.

I think it really drives home that a hero doesn't even necessarily have to be a decent person or a nice person. Just someone who did the right thing at the right time.

How am I not to think you are a zionist when you complain about the critic of zionism ideology and crimes as antisemitic?

And I´ve already explained how many real holocaust survivors hate zionism you are lacking on reading comprehension and argumentation skills mate. Calling somethin "antisemitic" without any explanation is not an argument.

If you think posting a comic that is a critique of Israel, that will lead to conversation about the hard facts of Israeli occupation and Zionist genocide, in a thread discussing a comic regarding Holocaust survivors in New York was anything but a stunt to provoke born of inherent antisemitism, then this argument is pointless.

Sacco deserves his own thread, derailing this thread, which has nothing to do with him, his work, graphic journalism, or Israel, is a cheap Sup Forums stunt.

Have his last book then, its in pdf though...

>Days of Destruction, Days of Re - Hedges, Chris; Sacco, Joe.pdf

www7.zippyshare.com/v/osE5pHJl/file.html

>complain about the critic of zionism ideology and crimes as antisemitic
that's not what happened. user said that holocaust denial is not requirement to criticise jews/sionism. the rest is your projection.

>thinking screaming "JEEEEEWS" is n argument

There is nothing wrong with the Jewish species. They're just naturally inclined toward evil and to subjugate the goy.

Nope. This was his answer to Footnotes being posted, read again.

>Mate, do not drag one people's oppression in here to devalue another's. You don't care about the Palestinian's lives, you're just an antisemitic prick.

>making a joke about how retarded Sup Forums is makes you Sup Forums.
Mk, got any other autistic my opinion is law shit you wanna sling I'm all ears.

So, we are hijacking this thread?

Is it wrong to not have much of an interest in Maus? I've just always been interested in other mainstream nontraditional comics.

You guys are nuts if you think I'm following those links.
I'm down for a storytime though, pretty interested in that footnotes from Gaza one if yall got it.

Absolutely not man, some things just aren't your bag. I've got the first three volumes of Cerebus, and I just can't get into it that much.
It isn't a bad comic, it's just not my bag.

>Dude rips his dad apart
I forget, what was going on with him and his dad?

>expecting that anons will recognise jokes and irony on Sup Forums

It was funny how the author pointed out how much his father fit the stereotype in one point.

Don't expect a good holocaust story. The real story behind Maus is Art's relationship with his father as he chronicles his dad's experience, and so the bulk of the plot is built around the drama in their relationship, not his father's adventures in Poland.

That being said, the parts where Art talks about the Holocaust are brutal. He really challenges the idea of the "perfect victim" and paints the entire situation with such stark, unabashed realism that encapsulates the entire experience. Maus is probably the only Holocaust book I know of that shits all over the idea of Never Speaking Ill of The Dead. I'm genuinely surprised it's such a celebrated part of the Holocaust canon when eventually you reach a point where you don't even care if most of the characters live or die.

By the end of the book the reader is just as confused, frustrated, and disillusioned as Art is. And I say that entirely as a compliment- Maus is a fucking trip.

I just feel bad for ignoring its seemingly huge significance, I just don't like feeling obligated to read it. I felt the same about Watchmen until I finally got around to reading it a few months ago and enjoyed it, and I wonder if I'd feel the same after Maus.

Jesus Sup Forums derailed this hard.

Anyways OP, I read this the first time when I was like 12 and I've probably read it 30 times since.

It's a haunting and harsh look at the holocaust and the people that survived it. It doesn't shy away from depicting the worst traits of both. It's perhaps the most graphic, not edgy, book I've ever read.

And ignore the Sup Forumstards. Maus has no problem admitting that others where involved(an entire storyline only happens because there are also polish prisoners in the camps) and that there were plenty of people who acted unscrupulously of all types.

In the end the book is as much about grappling with terrible parents and the conflicting emotions that come with that as it is about the holocaust.

If you want another good Spiegelman book, I highly recommend In The Shadow of No Towers, his recollection of life as a NYC resident (and a Jew) in the wake of 9/11. It actually makes for a relatively decent reading companion for The Dark Knight Strikes Again of all things, helping contextualize Frank Miller's descent into madness after the first issue.

got a CBR linkbro?

Just remember that this is a hobby, and even if the only comic you ever read in your life was Sonichu that would be just as fine as being a shelf fag with $10,000 invested in your collection.
It's about enjoyment.

>The Torah demands Palestine be returned Palestinian sovereignty
Nigga do you even know what they Jews did when the first arrived in the holy land?

You'll just have to settle for the prequel, An American Tail.

This is probably the best description you're going to get.

t. 9th Grade English teacher who has to teach this every year.

Show your students pregnant Anne Frank hentai and post their reactions on /his/

...

My favorite bit in that regard is how post-holocaust his dad throws a fit because he gave a black dude a ride.

I also really liked how he struggled with how the animal metaphor kinxa breaks down and his inner conflict about how to portray the holocaust.

I don’t think you need to worry that way. I for one did not find it interesting and wouldn’t own it if I hadn’t found it cheap in a thrift store. I mentioned earlier that I should try it again ... everyone else likes it, and it is a “significant comic”
But if I still don’t like it I am not likely to lose sleep. There are a fuckton of other comics that I like

I remember really liking it when I was a kid. It was the first time I'd seen the word 'damn' in a comic book, and I thought they'd put it in the wrong library. Although maybe they had, this was an elementary school library.

Just be thankful no one has posted about Anne Frank (yet).

Threads relating to Anne Frank in the smallest possible way consistently devolve into pregnancy fetish pornfests and Neo-Confederate shitposting.
