ITT: Character Reinventions

Think of a Sup Forums character. Got it? Sure? Alright. Now reinvent them. But here's the catch: You cannot change everything or deviate from the core foundation. For exaple, a more 60s Spider-Man who doesn't get humbled by Ben's death and starts operating more like SpOck is acceptable. But going all Bullet Points with Spider-Banner & Parker-Hulk is what I want to avoid in this thread. You know, make it a bit more challenging.

Alright, I'll start with something easy, to show you what I mean. Let's pick Iron Man. He's still an industrialist, but insteadof being a 2nd Generation Success-Story, his past is a mystery. He's a millitary contractor and a playboy, but Stark himself is an enigma. A mix between Don Draper and Gatsby. Moreover, even after the accident he'd still be in the weapons business, like in the early books. His personality would be more like Howard Hughes, on whom he was based.

Superman, but Clark Kent is a sleazy reporter who dresses loudly and specialises in yellow journalism. In an alternate Gold/Silver Age, Lois, his other more legitimate peers, and a number of cops are all frustrated that Clark always seems to be in the thick of the latest super crisis so he can get the latest scoop and brag about it:

"Geez Louise, Franky. I'm glad none of this serial killer's death traps worked on any of his kidnapees. But if he hadta off somebody, why couldn't it av been that reptile, Clark Kent? I betcha a mint that he's going to make it sound like he singlehandedly saved everybody or sumfin to that nature."

Superman uses his Clark persona to vent all his frustrations, vices, and vulnerabilities in a noted inverse of the typical superhero fantasy.

This is very confusing for Clark's Smallville friends when they come to visit him since he was nothing like that back when he was younger.

Batman as less of a Mary Sue fanfic character, and more of an anti-hero.He uses his wealth and influence of Wayne Industries to try to fix Gotham, like normal, but much more extreme and controlling. He gathers political clout over the years, becoming more and more able to enact sweeping changes to his city in his quest to end crime. His initiatives and acts frequently toe the line of authoritarianism as time goes on, and some of his rogues tout themselves as freedom fighters. His biggest foil would still be the Joker, retooled as more sympathetic and less pure evil, but still insane.

As Batman he's a more brutal character, still not killing but absolutely not above crippling his enemies permanently (The Riddler has his cane for a reason this time) He doesn't have any Sidekicks or police support as the bat, and the Idealistic heroes won't associate with him, even attempting to stop both Bruce and Batman on occasion. When a street-level hero tries it, they are often overcome and placed in Blackgate, now the most secure prison on US soil due to Bruce Wayne's near-limitless funds.

Bruce's actions eventually put him into opposition, but not outright conflict with Superman, who becomes his friend at the beginning, but is increasingly driven away by batman's viciousness and authoritarianism. Clark eventually sees Bruce as almost another Lex Luthor, just as obsessive and in danger of crossing the line into villainy for good.

Zatanna Zatara as a normal human magician, rather than a Homo Magi. She basically operates a lot like some of the goofier/older incarnations of the Joker, using stuff like playing cards and magic swords and other magic gimmicks. I always thought her outfit was a little out of place with her powers literally just being spell casting. I'd keep her outspoken and peppy personality, but she'd be way more social and because of it always burnt out from other people, constantly going to huge rich-bastard parties. She wouldn't have lots of meaningful relationships, either. Kinda like Bruce Wayne.
Also now she isn't a magic cunt I'd get rid of all that dumbass ancestory
The only thing I can't decide is whether or not she's a hero or villain. I like the idea of her being a lighthearted bank robbing villain, I wouldn't be able to stand her as anything higher tier. Maybe a Flash or Batman rogue.

Spider - Man. Uncle Ben doesn't die, but suffers from punctured lung, which makes him a bit more moody. Still, great responisbility works, only now Spidey is more focused on crime prevention and sending his villains to psychiatrists if possible, thanks to his talk to Ben afterwards. Makes for a more boring story now that i think of it

Batgirl - Former mentor Bruce Wayne dies in an operation orchestrated with the help of Robin, who betrays both. Now batgirl takes care of Gotham, but instead of doing it as batgirl she instead dresses up as Batman so the rumor of his death doesn't cause panic nor the loss of hope among the citizens. The girl is torn apart by the loss of her two friends, an abandoning of her life in order to take the place of a full-time vigilante and of course the pressure of living up to Batman himself, every time the people of Gotham doubt she takes it personally, and eventually she breaks the long standing rule of no-killing.

I thought this thread got deleted

Well, it's still here, so...

>Mary Sue

I think your Iron-Man approach is really interesting. I think it would be cool if he played up his villainous side and sorta plays at both teams, kinda like The Green Hornet being known as a villain to help him do heroic things. Maybe he can even swith between armors and be Iron-Man AND Crimson Dynamo when he needs to be "undercover". He could help other heroes from time to time despite them not always agreeing with his reckless, almost dangerous, ways of dealing with situations. Maybe he can even have specialized weapons to use against heroes as a theoretical contingency plan.

Clock King as Star City's top crime lord. The strict, efficient kingpin regulates nearly everything in the city, making sure everything beats steadily to his own will, and surprisingly crime is down. A foil to Queen Industries, a straight man to Oliver's witty nature, Tockman is driven to make Star City a well oiled machine that benefits everyone, even if it means people have to die here and there.

Killer Moth was once a rank and file goon that worked for everyone. One day he'd help Joker with a heist, the next he'd help Penguin run his club. He sorta learned from all of these, learning how they all failed. You see, during his later henching years, he decided later to become a real villain, and let his daughter design his suit. The suit turned out to be clumsily designed, but he stuck with it. Now he's one of Batman's most dangerous foes due to him not taking a while to kill Batman like every other villain, and possibly also due to him knowing Batman's identity.

Way to go, user. You recycled Sup Forums's Killer Moth pitch and made it lame by making him "one of Batman's most dangerous foes"

allow me to change it more
>Moth stays a millionare due to him being rich from all the times he's worked under some villains
>Doesn't really kill, only when it's someone fucked up who's already trying to kill him he's okay with murder
>Joker actually gets him to become Moth because he sees him as a joke and wants to push him down further
>Seems like an utter joke when it comes to plans, but they're all just to drag out Batman. He wants to block out the sun? He actually just wants the Bat
>Still works as a mercenary for other villains, if only to fund his own shit.
>Really only wants to hunt the bat as a sort of game, really only to see who's superior
>Eventually he becomes a sort of hero for the D-listers and below
>Alternate timeline where he accidentally kills the Bat during one of their sparring sessions, he BECOMES the bat himself as a way of honoring him, all while still having his goons helping him

so.... the Monarch?

I'm not really good at these but I'll try one.

Gregor Shapanka was the son of a Hungarian politician who had ties to the Nazi Party. Shapanka's family enjoyed a comfortable life and Gregor himself showcased a gifted intellect which would lead him to pursue a career in the scientific fields.

Not long after WW2 ended and the leftovers of the SS were being persecuted, the Shapankas fled to America for refuge. Most of Gregor's family died of illness not long after but America had already turned their attention to the new enemy on the horizon; the Soviet Union.

Gregor, sensing an opportunity to return to science applied for a job at Stark Industries and in doing so joined the R&D team of the company to combat the USSR.

Gregor Shapanka realising his own mortality after witnessing the slow, painful death of his family, researched ways to become physically immortal and when he tried stealing and selling Stark tech for more money, he failed and was summarily fired by Tony Stark.

Returning with a cold generating suit he became known as the supervillain, Jack Frost, who committed bank robberies to fund his immortality research. But Gregor's own technology backfired on him as his suit went haywire in a battle with Iron Man and the resultig catastrophe mutated him into a being who can generate cold by absorbing the energy from his surroundings.

A mutate and a criminal. Gregor Shapanka now seeks vengeance on Tony Stark.

How does he do that btw? It sounds like a rad concept

Son of a watchmaker, slowly worked his way up a banking corporation, finds out his firm launders money for Star City mobs. He starts correcting their fuckups/accounting errors because he can't afford to lose the cash he's invested in this company, and to help pay for his sick sister. He starts getting engrossed in the numbers game and knows where all the dirty money is flowing, but as time goes on gets more and more work piled on him, and he can't leave because he knows too much and his productivity has made Star City's mobs more profitable with his financial know how. All this time working has left little time for his sister, and even with medical care he's paid for she dies and Tockman realizes the time he has wasted. After that, he decides to slowly network his way into the families, no longer just a number cruncher, but actively taking over, buying others out.

Fuck, I'm tired, that probably sounds like shit

Keep it up user. I'm really interested in how he runs Star City especially.

Joker, but instead of doing random edgy nonsense that makes sense only to him, he recognizes that Batman is not a person, but the idea and the only way to defeat an idea is to make joke out of it, so his schemes focus on ridiculing heroes in the eye of public and shit like that.

Well, it’s not comics but...

Stephen Universe - The estranged celebrity son of famed rock idol, Mr. Universe, who in the years since his stardom has seemingly dissappeared off the map. Stephen spends most of his time living up the celebrity high life, spending his part time taking care of the roaming beasts that plague Empire City with his inherited magical powers. His part-time superhero antics pay the bills, but his real focus is on living the high life of celebrity culture, but recently he’s become increasingly obsessed with winning the affections of Connie Maheswaran, the young medical prodigy and secret paranoid conspiracy theorist over what she fears is an impending intergalactic invasion.

His reckless lifestyle is interrputed by the appearance of the Crystal Gens, his estranged godmothers who see him as the only hope for fighting back a full on invasion from the gem Homeworld by way of uniting all of the disparate rogue gens in the local star systems under one banner, a task which Stephen frequently sleeps on, much to their concern.

But, at his core, Stephen is still, despite his cool kid frat boy exterior, still an ultimately emotional and empathetic guy at heart with an unnatural knack for getting inside people’s minds. Hopefully it’s enough to save the world from complete devestation.

Id love to see this Clark’s Ma and Pa dress him down for acting like they didn’t raise him.

Killer Moth getting BTFO by Batman once, then reinventing himself as the wheelman for other villains

>a sleazy reporter who dresses loudly and specialises in yellow journalism
>Constantly writes provocative, slanderous articles about various political figures in-universe
>They can't eliminate him because every time they shoot him they somehow miss by centimeters and seems to shrug off every poison they feed him

Green Lantern Corps scaled down to street level, with their policing given the same kind of serious tone as Law and Order. Real detective work ensues. Sinestros are a mix between a recurring gang and the terrorist group du jour. Reds are a rival gang and a hate group, whom the Sinetros posit as the greater of their two evils. Larfleeze is an urban legend, a thief who steals everything not nailed down, and maybe more than that. Local Blue church with Deacon Brody Walker. Local psych ward and rehab with Indigo logo.
I’ve got nothing concrete for the Star Sapphires. Feminist activists a la Pussy Riot? A violet-colored dating app? The newest designer drug?

Nah you’ve gotta go full comedy. They try to poison him but he suddenly bumps into you and you spill it. You go to snipe him and he sneezes/bends over/trips every single time

batman that operates a bit more on instilling fear
wears a creepy mask, sorta like pic related but less organic/realistic
uses fear toxin
has theatrical and practical gadgets that help convey the myth of the batman being a literal monster

I like it

Like any other criminal empire I would imagine. Also had this idea to make him a avid swordsman, took fencing. Carries a blade and a small knife, like an hour/minute hand, and uses his analytical nature to predict when to dodge Oliver's arrows, and when to strike them out of the air. Maybe even give him a glorified, clock themed pacemaker that keeps his heart ticking

>hour hand sword and minute hand parrying dagger
Don't forget the second-hand holdout gun.

steve-o noki-verse?

The thinking process behind it was to really focus on the "American Dream" aspect. It's why he'd create his "Empire" all by himself, instead of inheriting it. And as the series would progress, you'd learn exactly how. It's why I used Draper & Gatsby as examples, since their whole character arcs hinge on being ashamed of their pasts, and keeping it a secret. Something like this would happen here but the "twist" would be that nothing really terrible happened in his life, he just had a superiority complex that made him feel inferior due to not coming from old money, causing him to withhold information.

I'd keep the weapons bit intact, but also have him start an army-for-hire firm down the line. Stark Industries would turn into a Tech-Conglomerate with subsidiaries that would make everything from toys to nanobots, but his control freak approach would just make him want to have a hand in every pie. He'd still have good intentions, mind you, but he'd be a more "melancholic" character. The women and the booze would be distractions, ways to feel "normal". Just like the early characterization, really.

In the end, you have a "two-faced" person. The Tony who goes in talk shows and promotes his products while being a womanizer super-hero, and the Tony who schemes behind the scenes and feels empty. Iron Man would be his hero persona, but he'd use the War Machine alias for the more black-ops "missions". Rhodes would be a General Ross-esque antagonist who becomes the Iron Patriot. I'd revamp/overhaul his whole cast, really.

But really, the whole book would be a character piece. Tony would come to terms with who he is, his mortality, his "destiny", his persona, plus start accepting outside help, learn to let go a bit. But it'd be a long way to there, filled with mistakes and pain and suffering. I'd really put him through an emotional grinder.

Frank Castle, an ex-hoodlum from Queens, gives up his life of crime to marry his high school sweetheart and join the priesthood. But soon, he is drafted into the Vietnam War, and subjected to all of its horrors. After being stripped of most of his humanity in the crucible of war, he comes back to his apartment to find his wife and children slaughtered-- and recently. A small clue left behind points to an old acquaintance from his days on the street, and the bad blood he thought he'd left behind. He determines, from that point onward, that no injustice shall be unseen, and no scum shall be left alive. Using his knowledge of the streets and his combat-honed skills, he walks unseen amongst the populace both innocent and guilty, passing judgement-- ...no, PUNISHMENT, on those who would seek to do harm to the good people. As his own personal war rages on, Frank must grapple with the grim implications of his actions, his family's death, his ever-wavering faith, and the system he once fought for, as his crusade on crime spreads ever wider. Will he keep his spirit same and soul everlasting in this vengeful tract, or will he become that which he hates most? Either way, the fight marches onward; for there will always be the guilty to punish, and he is-- The Punisher.

I like it user.

You might just get that with the Chinese GLC

Really don't get how this is any different from regular Punisher besides Frank starting out a street kid.

>that's a deagle chambered in .22lr
makes me lul every tiem
>a .44magnum or .50ae deagle would have a chambering of two to three times that size diameter muzzle

scarecrow is now a southerner
that's it

DC or Marvel?

yes

My take on this approach--
>in the past, he's done some of the things he catches criminals doing (and punishes them for)
>he's built up before being brought down
>he actually has issues he has to internally struggle with, instead of just pulling an eternal FRANK face and shouldering it with zero problems
I wanted to make him less "revenge fantasy avatar" and more "broken man slowly goes off the rails" while still retaining elements of the former that make it work. It would be a spectacle, watching the humanity slowly slough off of him as he witnesses and commits atrocity after atrocity. Half the thrill would be seeing how he deals with, say, feeling more remorseful about killing a street thug that had the jump on him than that fisherman in the Mekong who may have been reaching for a fishing pole... or a Kalashnikov. As much as I like good ol' revenge fantasy Punisher, it would be a more interesting character study to "bring him down to our level" as it were. Admittedly not a bulletproof concept, but it's interesting and it could work.
They probably just straight-up traced some cheap plastic $30 lookalike spring gun and didn't bother to account for the muzzle size. That's artists with a time constraint for you.
>tfw no autoloader in a meaty magnum cartridge
I-it's fine, I wanted a Beretta anyway...

A thread on the Advice board of an anonymous Gujarati sword dancing forum asks about how to deal with romantic interests that are patently bad influences.
One post tells the story about a hard-partying girl who wouldn't take no for an answer - even if it meant drugging her boyfriend.
A second post talks about how a rebound relationship after a bad breakup started out great, but slowly turned into mutual toxicity.
A third relates how the author's girl isn't all bad - she has her sweet moments, but he has to be very firm about where he draws the line.
A fourth is just a WorldStarHipHop link of Carnage attacking a party.

Larfleeze and the Orange Lanterns

Larfleeze attempts to construct a proper Corps after losing his original. To that end, he is attempting to assemble a group of Lanterns who are "greedy enough" to be his soldiers while not being avaricious to the point of trying to wrest control from him.

It works like a big pyramid scheme. Orange Lanterns start with 100% Energy and must use their rings to get more via absorbing it from outside sources or converting physical matter into power. Their batteries serve an inverted purpose as using them will bring their rings back to 100% (ex. You had 500% power before using it, the extra 400% is taken off) and give the excess energy to Larfleeze. Lacking anything to contribute (or if he thinks you're not contributing enough) will result in immediate termination. Besides that, they can do what they want; good, bad, whatever.

An activist anti-hero who revels in the public light and spends equal time protecting Star City from threats and performing outrageous stunts that expose or bring attention to acts of corporate greed and corruption. While he's friend of Nightwing and Black Canary's husband, he's otherwise only barely tolerated in the hero community for on account of his obnoxiously self-righteous tirades and the open secret that he funds most of his operation with money stolen from the super-wealthy.

forgot the picture

A baby is discovered by a ship in the middle of the ocean. The baby is adopted by a childless sailor, and he brings him home to his wife. They decide to name him Arthur.
They both live by the sea, and Arthur since early childhood had an affinity towards the sea and sealife, which nobody can explain. He feels like he doesn't belong in land. He starts out as a sailor at a very early age. One day they meet some abondoned captain in the middle of the sea. He's dressed like Corto Maltese and has mannerism like a mix of Corto and Constantine. He is recognised as a wanted pirate and the crew ties him up so they can leave him at some nearby piece of land. He tells Arthur that he's from Atlantis and he can help him reach there. Arthur reluctantly helps him escape and then they both flee. Arthur steals a ship, hires crew, meets other Atlantis explorers along the way and they begin their quest for Atlantis with the WW1 in the backdrop. They have to dodge off coast patrol, pirates and the navy. The first part is a maritime adventure as Arthur and co go around the world researching and exploring various clues about Atlantis. Arthur starts discovering his powers slowly during this time.

Aquaman and his ship are discovered by the guy who originally owned the ship. Their ship is set ablaze and the crew is captured. Aquaman plunges into the sea. He had been into the sea before, but never deep or for long. He goes unconscious and upon gaining back his consciouness, he finds himself in some tent, which he soon discovers is underwater and on top of a chain of sea creatures. He was found unconscious by an underwater gypsy civilization. Their beliefs claim that they are ancestors of ancient Atlanteans. The second part is basically underwater barbarian Aquaman with a mix of biopunk. Aquaman meets Mera, Vulko and occasionally meets the sailor who he rescued in the first arc. It ends with Aquaman winning back his Kingdom.

As for the backstory:
Atlantis was once the most powerful and advanced civilization on earth. They got too full of themselves and decided to conquer Olympus, where the Gods lived. Atlantis eventually lost and as punishment, they were submerged deep into the sea. The gods feared that they would try to attack once again and split Atlantis into smaller backward tribes and different kingdoms, which will forever be without any progress. Poseidon, who takes pity upon the Atlanteans cracks the curse and says that Atlantis will be unified and flourish once again by a ruler born between the bond of a surface dweller and an underwater dweller. All of the kingdoms develop differently and have their own belief system and mythology now, but they're still aware of the prophecy. In the far future, in the kingdom of Poseidonis, the queen is accused of eloping with a surface dweller. The gods ar wary of it; That Atlantis may unite again. They get the other tribal chiefs and kings on their side, since the new ruler of Poseidonis might reunite Atlantis and take their kingdoms off them. They even get the ministers and other potential successors of the throne on their side with promises of power. With everybody on their side, the queen is to be executed. The queen prays to Poseidon to protect her child. Thus, Arthur is saved and placed on the surface, where nobody would be aware of him.
So, the third part would be Aquaman conquering other Kingdoms to reunite Atlantis.

This thread reminds me of that great thread a while back. Where we reimagined lots of different cape heroes. Good times good times

The one with Sorcerer Stark as a OP's Pic? Back in Summer?

Yeah.

I remember the Ghost Rider ones. And Pirate Strange. Also Der Pinguin. And Lovecraft Hulk. Oliver Queen: Archer King was fuucking rad too.

Yeah, that was mine. With Techno-Sorcerer Doom (+Council of Doom) & Pirate Strange with Old One Ancient One. I tried again around October, but nobody answered. That was truly a good thread. Even hit the bump limit. Makes me wish it was possible to recover it.

Welp, better look to the future and make some cool new ones.

desuarchive.org/co/thread/94355925/

I guess. This one's mine as well.

D'Oh, completely forgot about the Archives.Truth is I never learned how to use them.

Pretty interesting user. It could make for some fun swashbuckling adventures in the Pirate Ship section.

Barracuda is now a regular employee of Kingpin's, mainly used to deal with uncooperative capos. He has his own series where he makes hits against unsympathetic and evil villains so you can enjoy the violent antics with a clear conscience. It'd be like The Punisher but done in a humorous tone.
He's also dating Typhoid Mary.

The Mad Hatter is Gotham's resident inventor, sort of like The Tinkerer. He is a guy who's on friendly terms with most of the rogues and who's responsible for building/fixing/selling a lot of tools for the other rogues. He's not exactly a huge threat himself but his machines are exceptionally dangerous at the hands of people who know how to use them.

He has a Wonderland Gang comprised of himself, the Tweed brothers (one being particularly smart and the other being particularly strong and both being more competent at criminal work than Jervis), The Carpenter (his business partner who offers a death trap discount for Jervis' clients), White Rabbit (who just kinda invited herself in and no one really complained about it) and other villains.

He has the backstory from TAS but his main goal is specifically to help people live out their fantasies and make everyone satisfied in them. That includes Batman.
He's no longer a pedophile. Instead, he's mostly oblivious as to what sex is, like the delusional manchild he is. It could make for some pretty funny scenarios like Poison Ivy trying to seduce him for free gadgets but all he wants to do is put her in a Alice costume and invite her for tea. People think he's a pedophile because of the way he acts and his obsession with young blonde girls, but his intentions are not sexual and he doesn't understand what he is doing wrong.

Essentially, her is like a child playing dress up throwing tantrums when other people don't join in. Jervis wants to be a whimsical and quirky man, but he doesn't have the right mentality or temperament for it. It's why he is the Mad Hatter; he's trying to force himself into a more interesting person and for everyone else to join in on the fantasy.

Reed Richards: everything's the same but he's a woman now instead.

I guess I'll try another one. I did just now. Ok so basically it's a retelling of Black Widow's story but more focus is put on her adventures as a child soldier with Ivan in WW2. She and Ivan get kidnapped and she's trained to become a spy in the Red Room when she's 15. Five years later she breaks out and rescues Ivan from the KGB and she goes into hiding.

She meets Alexei and they start a romance and when the KGB find out they fake his death and kidnap him and Natasha, out of grief, returns to the Red Room. She trains and becomes their best Black Widow and is sent out to do some missions. She's mostly successful solo but she always fucks up when she's partnered with somebody:

>French was too greedy
>Turgenov was too arrogant
>She had some real feelings for Hawkeye

So she returns to Russia, kills her bosses and steals all of their information and secrets. She then goes back to America and surrenders herself to SHIELD. Only after a few romps with other evil organisations.

She then uses her knowledge and secrets to become an Avenger and to live a better life and to get diplomatic immunity for any crimes. Acting as SHIELD's Hannibal Lecter of sorts.

In an unknown time....in an unknown sand country full of surreal scenery depicting signs of the apocalypse....Spectre is without a host and depowered; He's almost a mortal soul, though he can still perform miracles. He's also lost a calming feeling of the presence of God from his mind. He wants to be judged worthy by God on the day of judgement. He finally senses someone who can be the host. It is a new born child from some Muslim family. Spectre sends an epiphany asking the father to sacrifice the child so that it may become the host of Spectre, who would then continue his job that God has bestowed upon him. But his father refuses.
Spectre has to kill the child and possess it, while the child's family is on the run from Spectre and his cult, other messianic and demonic cults, and other dangers of this surreal pre apocalyptic world. Spectre gets more and more desperate by the moment, and worries that his effort will go to waste.

>venom as a history of relationships
Has this ever been explored?

It has potential.

Alan Scott is the Green Lantern of Sector 2814. The Guardians have now fully embraced the power of the Starheart and has started to imbue some of the corps with Starheart magic to combat alien magic where traditional Oan rings are shown to be ineffective.

Mogo is the base of the science-based ring wielders and the now reborn Oa is the base of magic-based ring wielders, where Alan Scott has installed the Starheart Power Battery.
