Think about what the internet used to look like when Reddit and Sup Forums were made. Most activity was contained to message boards and homepages. The biggest sites on the internet had no interactivity, and the place you went to discuss things usually doubled as some kind of other features (MSN, Proboards, etc). Sup Forums was unique in that it was specifically for talking with other people.
now look at the internet. All of it has condensed down into Social Media sites, of which three of them dominate the entire internet. Most people who use the internet use it for those sites, and all other functions, such as news, games, etc. are merely extensions of the social media networks.
Not Sup Forums.
Sup Forums, userbase aside, has barely changed at all. And people want that. People ultimately don't like being judged on every single thing they say or having to worry about walking on eggshells around people when they just want to vent online. That's why so many people showed up to Sup Forums where you can say whatever you want and it all gets washed away after a few hours.
I think people underestimate the importance of an anonymous board that links people's ideas instead of their identities like every other site. Sup Forums has inadvertently grown into a niche that didn't exist when it was made.
that's why I think people still come here.
