The cgi is what makes it endearing with its goofy stylings and weirdly over expressive movements. If it were made with the same graphical fidelity as, say, Sonic Boom, but with the same awful writing and laughable voice acting, it wouldn’t be regarded so fondly. At least, in my opinion anyways.

The problem is that it IS using good animation. DKC as a show is for as stilted and weird as it looks, tried to do a lot of things that 3D animation of the time was still avoiding. It was one of the first shows to use motion cap, the models were more detailed than some of its contemporaries, and it actually had SHADOWS-- Beast Wars couldn't boast that.
The thing is mo cap was in its infancy and this was only a scant two years after Reboot even aired as the first computer animated show.

He's not in Smash because Sakurai has a very dim and narrow view of the DK series, and he's not in DK games anymore because, reportedly, Nintendo didn't want Retro Studios to use them. It's speculated that Nintendo blames the near death of the series on the last developers who had it using Rare's old characters, instead of the fact that those games they made were niche as fuck.
