What makes a cartoon animal "dangerously cheesy"?
There is a point where you can just tell even in pictures where it isn't supposed to be obvious. What gives it away?

Low effort drawing that relies on me fitting it to a human form I already know. There's very little 3D form, the proportions seem overly focused on forearms and chest.
The fur is being implied by an outline instead of a texture, and it's super over-the-top. Most advertising mascots, for example, will keep that outline of fur very small, unless it's meant to be something like a hairstyle, like what is showing.
Overall, you get the feeling the artist cared more about showing off how "unique" and "animalistic" the character is, rather than any sort of action or emotion.
There's something in the eyes too.
I think the number one thing is that all furry artists learn drawing from each other. There's some unmeasureable quality that gets transferred this way, and I'd be sad (but not surprised) if someone told me you can never shake that effect for the rest of your career.
If seeing them makes you worry that the next page could have gay sex, it is dangerously cheesy.
I believe the famous quote is, "I will not define hardcore always gay furry porn, but I know it when I see it."

Tails, fur, teeth and weird eyes are just sort of... there. They're not distracting, and the characters are unique despite having similar body types and color because of facial details, not because they're totally separate species.
Drawing cartoon animals is easy, but if you take advantage of that you look like a furry artist no matter what. Always put effort in, and people will notice.
