Sure, they aren't MAJOR characters, but they're still characters.

Often the anime will get you to know a character for one, maybe two episodes before they kill them off, in a vain attempt to get you emotionally invested in their death, which works for most people.

I don't know what to tell you. Characterization is one of the shittiest parts of RWBY, it's awful. shonen tier, but at least most shonen, SAO included actually keep to that characterization instead of just wildly changing it at will to cater to the badly written plot.

True, but on a meta level, we the audience know that Raven cares about Yang to a degree, if her expressions are anything to go by. She genuinely wanted Yang to join the tribe and for them to get a fresh start. Even if they aren't very strong, she does have some motherly affection for her and I doubt she can just throw that away. And although Yang and co don't know this, they HAVE to take the chance. It's a stupid one, but they still need it. It's better than the alternative of Salem getting the relic.
