Except when you are wearing a double breasted suit. That one you never unbutton, unless you want to. That's frowned upon though. Same with single breasted jackets: it's not in custom to button the bottom one (there are some exceptions to that, though) but you are free to do so if you do so consciously. Some people might see it as a lack of style, but those people have clearly never heard of sprezzatura. The thing with style is, that as long as you look in control and have well matched fabrics, you can do whatever you want. How do you think the "unbuttoned bottom button" came to be?
