I don’t understand why you would set something in the 1950s if you wanted to make a tumblr comic. Isn’t it problematic to use the surface aesthetics while ignoring the very real prejudices that occurred during the time?

sometimes i feel like Sup Forums keeps reenacting that episode of Deep Space 9 of Sisko being pissy everyone's having fun in Vic's holodeck casino despite the fact that the real timeline it's in would treat blacks and minorities like shit and everyone tells him to get the stick out his ass
But every now and then it's about shit like his that isn't fun or enjoyable and is way too overt in shoving an agenda down the reader's throat

i don't think there's anything wrong with just using aesthetics. it's not trying to be a historical piece

>Not embracing the alternate history

The thing that's really insulting is, a comic about some black greaser girls having to integrate into a previously White only school would be fucking legit. The early years of Integration were bumpy as fuck, with fights breaking out among students, staff displaying racial bias and parents straight up picketing the school.

You could tell all kinds of crazy, scary, funny and heartwarming stories in such a setting. Instead, we get this.

Tumblr loves revising history to suit its own ends. Just look at Dr Who.

>it's not trying to be a historical piece
Look at the car in op.

>Black greasers have to integrate into a white only school

Shit I'd read that. You'd get tons of drama and tension you'd need for a story off the bat.

you people are absolutely everywhere on Sup Forums today

what the fuck are you trying to say?

I'm gonna go in just to see if its composition's any good.

What do you mean “you people”

Alternate history is good if it is interesting.

I swear, there's gotta be a name for that toothless, depthless, blobby artstyle.

Calarts seems to be a the one that sticks

Is it the 1950s or just the aesthetics of it like Fallout? I got the impression it was the latter.

i mean historical as in "this happened"

They don't have the heart for that kind of thing. I flipped through the first couple of pages. Oh look, black lesbian, white lesbian, no one would have an issue with that. Oh look, a drive-in, gays and lesbians smooching, no one in the 50s would ever have a problem with that.

It's pap.

You people who want nothing to do but outraged. Who gives a shit about this toothless bullshit m8 outside of outragefags?

What? This isn't tumblr you fucking idiot, what are you on about?

>set in the 50's
>perfect time to set up your agenda of equality and racism
>disregard that
>let's make everything okay with no real conflict whatsoever
what a real fucking missed oppertunity.
also related
>movie set back in slavery days
>the word nigger is used
>gets mad that it's accurate
fucking whut? why?

then have it be an alternate history, or that it's back in fashion or literally anything else. don't cherry pick only the things you like

I like how you can tell the girl on the far left is the lowest on the gang's totem pole.
They just yelled "Hey! We're doing a 50s kinda greaser look!" And she panicked and threw on her only dark jacket (which isn't even black) and a pink long skirt cause she figured that wearing a dress like Sandy's was "close enough".
Hell she even wore her red rag in the same way as the black leader cause she couldn't think of anything original and copied to be "just like her she's so cool and badass".

>fiction has to be historically accurate

>A female electric output changes to male
I'm no electrician so idk how physically easy/possible that is IRL.

>you're not allowed to criticize
ok

I don't think user meant no one's allowed to criticize. It seems they meant that if it were a comic about struggles with acceptance and integration in the 50s a lot of people here would still complain. It would be called SJW bullshit all the same. And that this comic is so innocuous and just kinda there that it's not worth being upset about what it's doing unless you just felt bored by not being upset today.

You have to remember that even writing a story that includes racism for a typically sensitive audience like tumblr has a good chance of backfiring on the author, even if the author has liberal values. It's easier to simply romanticize the aesthetic with an average/boring story tagged on.

Something something socket metaphor.

The one on the left is a boy.

All those things existed in the 1950s, you know.

except that's exactly the kind of shit they'd eat up- some POS bringing down 'The Man'
for a bunch of 'warriors' they sure are cowardly huh?

So it's easier to be spineless than it is to really stick your guns and tell the racism story? What a shame.

I think you are giving the writer too much credit. They probably aren't too different from the audience.

no doubt there's retardation on this board but with a ton of randos you're bound to get that. same goes for criticism

therefore, it has to be portrayed as the norm of the time IN EVERY STORY and painted to be much prettier than it ever was?
it's not even that this specific story did it that gets me the most, it's that so many of them do-take out any real conflict and consequence in any time period.

Is it part of some new style for characters to keep their eyes shut?

I assumed the tall one on the far right was the boy.

sanae..you're beautiful...

I do know one thing, no lesbians were going for these chicks in reality. Because real lesbians have actual standards.

>written by a "kirirarau Aotearoa" who likely just took the aesthetics of the era in the U.S (off the internet) and nothing else

>crapola
Kill yourself.

>smackjeeves
That's a shithole I've forgotten about

What did "they" mean by this?

Eat my crapola. Fagoli.

>Doesn't park motorcycle in smaller parking spots made for them

They're all girls, but one is trans.

The answer to which may surprise you!

I got it! it's the most normal looking one... obviously

Course not, he's a Rebel.

>he's
very problematic

Yeah, but that would actually take effort to write.
Why put in effort when you can simply just pander?

I guess the author must be... pandersexual

the ginger is cute

I'd fuck his anus hole.

I want to grope his belly and whisper sweet nothings in his ear.

That's the thing, the author does want to show real prejudices, they want to show oppression and injustice and all that shit but are too triggered to actually show it.
You get tiny hints of shit sprinkled in, like when the club the black girl wants to go to no longer allows blacks, only for that conflict to last a single page before being immediately resolved by them just finding a "way cooler" club. It's like tumblrites understand that conflict is the most fundamental part of any story, but are still too frightened by it do touch it with their bare hands.

Then again, you're talking about people who consider Skyrim too triggering because people are racist towards elves, and then practically have a heart attack if they go play Morrowind and find out slavery is legal in that game.

I gotchu senpai

My main issue with this comic, like a lot of this style is they want to make everything nicer and friendly for LGBT people but they always want to show them triumphing over the evil straight white man so they make the conflict so shallow and innuendo laden the let the MC beat up a guy and that's it. Conflict over.

I wouldn't really see a problem if they just made it a AU 50s where shit is nice and gave them a conflict that was outside their sexuality.

Honest question: Were black greasers a thing?

>like when the club the black girl wants to go to no longer allows blacks,

A club that seems to be an open lesbian club, no less. It's so confusing about what it's trying to show.

In not the same because at one point the comic addresses the attitudes of that time period then glosses over it by punching a racist/sexist in the face. It would be one thing to have a Fallout style alt world where you have the athetics of the 50's with none of the bullshit but when you bring the bullshit up you cant hide behind that excuse

>greasers
Not exactly because greasers were specifically stated to be Italian and Hispanic (mostly Mexican) youths. Blacks in the 50's didn't really have or were called a specific subculture within the 50's because of the heavily segregated areas back then.

Well, strictly speaking, didn't greasers get their name from the grease in their hair?

>There is quite literally not a single heterosexual in a ground of 14 people
Is the gang some kind of gays only affair? Do they have "poll smokers" on the back of their jackets?

That's not the Reg I know

Well the term greasers has many origions. It did come from the product they used for their hair, but it also came from the culture doing "lower class" labor work, quazi-racism due to Italians and Chicanos having a more olive like skin completion, and from their fascination with hotrod culture.

Yeah, greaseball was a euphemism for italian too.

So to answer the question properly I don't know. I don't doubt there were greaser gangs with blacks in them since a lot of them were involved in organized crime, which attracted a lot of people. But organized crime and gangs generally tends to be racially homogeneous.

So again, your guess is as good as mine.

>smaller parking spots made for them
which didn't start happening until what, the 90s

>but they always want to show them triumphing over the evil straight white man so they make the conflict so shallow and innuendo laden the let the MC beat up a guy and that's it. Conflict over
I didn't know Dave Willis moonlit

>all those made up sexualities
'demiromantic', get the fuck out of here with that.

my dad went to high school in a (white) ethnic community and there was one black kid in the school who spent his entire tenure at the school on crutches because he was constantly getting his ass severely beat by the dago and slav kids.

It's weird that they'd break their magic gender and race-friendly 50s for this kind of thing. Makes it even more confusing and dissonant.

Quick Google search gives mixed answers. On the one hand, many Greasers were apparently Anti-Civil Rights (at least, Anti-race riot) and at least a few were white supremacists. One the other, there was in fact, a black greaser gang in New York.

Some other honest questions:
What does demi-romantic or demisexual mean?
What does gray-asexual mean?

that was the page which made me confused at the whole comic and what its trying to tell. at first it plays in a happy go lucky gay 50s alternative reality and then we get this? what the fuck

I hate that I know the answers to that.
Demi-romantic: Someone who only experiences romantic attraction after developing an emotional connection beforehand. This is TOTALLY SO RARE that it needed a name.
Demisexual means the same thing, someone who only experiences sexual desires with people they have an emotional connection with. Again, so unheard of that it needed another label.

Gray-asexual basically means 'sometimes wants sex, sometimes doesn't. So. Again...very unheard of.

This is absolutely asinine.

The historical revisionism is intentional, it always is with these kind of stories. It's an aggressive ideological campaign against the opposition's values.

>comic is about racial inequality
>written by some suburban white girls or, at most, some aristocratic fourth generation immigrants who think they're oppressed

Every time.

This is...quite boring. Honestly don't see what you saw in this...at all.

At a glance I kind of like the art and concept but after I saw the bio page listing everyone's preferred pronouns and sexuality I immediately lost all interest. Even if it's much more well executed than it looks, that's still a lot of "show, don't tell" 101 going on.

>an openly gay interracial club
>in the 50s

They'd be publicly fucking crucified as a bunch of lowlife commies thst need to be banned the thing about the 50s was everyone was in everyone's business for better or worse cause of the end of the war essentially making everyone have a common background. So anyone who wasn't a part of that was clearly some degenerate that needed to be run out of town, according to the public.

Since then demographics have dramatically changed so the values have shifted considerably, but it's downright stupid to ignore this shit if it's the whole point of your comic.

Ok...... Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

>Anxious ginger
>Dark haired, olive skinned guy
Wait just a fucking second

Gender:Demi-cancer

It's time to stop!

>Demi-Pansexual

HOW DOES THAT EVEN WORK

Wait, what?

I can understand someone being sexually attracted to someone with no romantic feelings, but why would anyone have romantic feelings for someone they don't want also want sexually? Isn't that the biological point of romantic feelings? That's not to say people don't sometimes change their mind about wanting to have sex with someone they're romantically attracted to, but isn't romantic-feeling paired with sexual attraction at the outset. I thought that what distinguish romantic attraction from a friend-crush or whatever? What even is romance in this demi/pan, etc. label-obsessed context?

Depends what you mean by "open". There was certainly a thriving gay community back then. People kept to themselves, but it's not really a secret what they do.

It's """"problematic"""" to portray history as it was.

It's the [current year] so you have to be diverse, even when you write stories that would simply not be diverse. If the past is "racist" it's easier to rewrite it than look at things as they were.

I don't know quite how to explain it. Because tumblr seems to think that everyone on earth wants to fuck everyone of the gender they're attracted to. They use Demi to mean "doesn't want to fuck everyone."

So Demi pansexual would be "Doesn't want to fuck everyone but when they do like someone it isn't based on gender."

>Other

To parse the code stated here , I think it means someone who is pansexual but is only sexually attracted to people they have a prior "emotional" connection with.

That's the stupidest fucking shit I've ever heard, it's like that one tumblr post about a dude trying to make up a word for being cis that wasn't cis because "I feel like I'm genetically born to be transexual but identify as the gender opposite of my transexuality (basically, I'm cis but am terrified of calling myself the C word)"

I going through the whole thing w/ a 6 pack.

It's deep friendship but they want to call it a sexuality.

>50s setting
>Terms like bigender and demiboy

They've only got two, broad terms for people like that in the 1950s: Faggot and mentally ill.

You're gonna need a lot more than a six pack my friend

I love how this comic actually glorifies cheating, implying that queers are stupider than normal people.

Sounds like Tumblr needs to learn fucking Greek.

You know I am a pretty tolerant guy, I want to fuck Monsters girls, I don't care what other people want to fuck.

But this sort of shit is infuriating and just makes me think if somebody ever called themselves Demi-Pansexual in front of me, they get a fucking fist to the bridge of the nose.

Like seriously, I didn't used to hate transexual people.

Now I do.
