for a population to remain stable every family is expected to produce 2 children on average, one to replace the mother, one to replace the father. The children are also expected to produce 1 child each to replace themselves. The actual number projected to sustain a population is 2.1 per family, the extra .1 is to compensate for death, infertility, etc.
since we're below 2.1, we're heading toward extinction thanks in part to the availability of abortion.
