Also, the whole "unrealistically hot" argument doesn't work. Betty Ross became a gamma monster called Harpy, and she was ugly as sin. The Leader was supposed to be suave and handsome in a Vincent Price-ish way (artists just varied in how they drew him), Doc Samson was almost entirely human-looking except for the hair and Betty fell for him, and a What If? issue showed Rick Jones becoming The Hulk and still looking relatively handsome.

Lost in all of this is the true story as to WHY She-Hulk (and to a lesser extent, Spider-Woman) even exists:
CBS had the TV rights to Hulk and Spider-Man (the infamous live action Spider-Man show from the late 70s) and with Hulk, they wanted a spin-off ala Six Million Dollar Man/Bionic Woman. A female "She-Hulk" which they also foolishly told Marvel, CBS believed they would own 100% and worse, do long after they canceled Hulk's show.
Marvel got pissed the fuck off that CBS was plotting to betray them. They had their lawyers look over their contracts/copyright and trademark laws and found that CBS COULD do let alone do it to Spider-Man as well. Worse, ANYONE could do it since no-one had copyrighted/trademarked She-Hulk or Spider-Woman as of that time. The lawyers told Marvel the only way to stop CBS (or anyone else) would be to beat them to the punch and create their own female Spider-Man and She-Hulk.
Hence the creation of the two characters.
The only reason they didn't disappear entirely is two-fold:
Chris Claremont got made writer of Spider-Woman (which he personally kept alive for nearly four years)
Roger Stern LOVED both characters. So much so that he added She-Hulk to the Avengers (where she came into her own) and retconned the end of Claremont's Spider-Woman comic, which ended with Jessica Drew dying to keep her around.
