imo, Amy has always been a bad/bland/useless character, other than being a "girl with a desperate crush on Sonic" and pseudo-strong-woman she barely was anything else to her. Let alone her totally uninspired design and color palette of a girly girl. Yet another one useless moody female, who can beat up teammates, but can't beat up enemies or do something useful at all.
To be fair no one else would have worked, the Beatles all gelled really well with each other.

Be honestly, even when she's better written like during the Ian Flynn era of Archie, I have to agree. While I do like her design, solely because I'd fug it (but only after literally every other female choice), Amy doesn't really DO anything special that deems her necessary and isn't even a good friend to anyone. Not even Cream, who the series tries to force as being her Tails even thought Blaze had a better relationship with her for that in Sonic Rush.
Honestly, I don't think anyone really likes Amy for any reason other than "she looks cute" or people thinking she'd look great with Sonic even though that's only true on a visual standpoint. Heck, the problem with Sonic himself has never been that a romance can't work with him. It's just that a romance with him can't work with HER. He'd be better with someone that knows how to either keep up or let him come and go as he pleases and literally EVERY other girl in the series can do one or the other. Some can even do both.
Amy exists just to be Sonic's top fangirl and as a reminder o the audience that Sonic is a popular dude in-universe, but even THAT is redundant because Tails already does that without being an annoying little bitch. Well, unless you're playing Lost World.
tl;dr Yeah, Amy's cute girl but that's all she has going for her. Other than that, she's useless and a waste of space that could be filled by better characters. Advance 2 did the right thing making the initial cast be Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Cream and Rush was right to make it just Sonic and Blaze.
