Take Finland for example, we were ruled by a foreign power and not too much later we're at the fucking top of the list in basically every single good quality in a country that you can measure.
Also, I suggest you take a look into these countries. All the infrastructure - and I mean ALL of it is old and crumbling, built by European colonizers. Not much progress has been made since.
