They usually send several, not necessarily at the same time. The goal is to cause defending soldiers to break ranks, sew confusion and in this case make the attackers advance slowly enough that ISIS can continue inflicting maximum casualties in a fighting retreat.
Some of these are absolutely devastating. They'll attack immediately in its wake and overrun positions that otherwise would have taken massive firepower (which they don't have).
