Why aren't anthologies supported more?

Why aren't anthologies supported more?

You get substantially more content and story variety for roughly the price of a couple of floppies.

Because when you only like one story in it you feel really cheated. Especially if it happens a few times consecutively.

I bought every issue of Island and get Now by Fantagraphics

...

i think is mostly because there is no need anymore, know the internet takes care of the distribution of really indie comics, the same thing with cartoons shorts, we used to have tv shows that whowed animated shorts, now they are on the internet

Do the mods still delete Heavy Metal storytimes?

i dont rememeber they used to do that,we shoud try

Because it always has strips I don't like and thus don't want to pay for.

The few storytimes I've lurked got deleted because TIDDAYS.

Is Heavy Metal still a thing? I always heard tales of it from older folks talking about the scant titties they got to see in print media and figured it would have either died or gone to shit years and years ago.

The French version is dead, but Heavy Metal is still being published bimonthly.

Is it good, or is it just living off the name?

How much of a factor is the proliferation of cape books leading to some readers having difficulty appreciating or even trying out non-cape books?

nah.

Shonen is terrible and Graham is a faggot that wants to kill off the comic industry so indie trash can flourish. Also, a Heavy Metal subscription is only like $25 a year for bimonthly magazines. Just get it if you're even remotely interested.

>Graham is a faggot that wants to kill off the comic industry so indie trash can flourish

Sounds good to me. Second crash can't come soon enough.

>Second crash can't come soon enough.
Big 2 aren't doing shit right now. Literally all indies have to do is publish a single truly good comic. But guess what? The industry is being handed over on a silver platter and every single one of these hacks is just choking. Indies will always be bad. If the big 2 die, they take everyone with them.

>If the big 2 die, they take everyone with them.
see

This has to be a falseflag, right? Right? Someone can't possibly be this retarded.

I never had a floppie reading Heavy Metal, least the good issues.

I actually discovered Requiem thanks to Heavy Metal magazine so I definitely see the worth of the mag.

Unfortunately Hellboy didn't save us, nor did Underwater Welder.

Just post a link here and dump the storytime on /aco/. They could use the culture over there.

the art houses are gone or changed dramatically, probably as a result of art schools changing.

comic books are not profitable, there is no average reader anymore, and quality control is pretty fucking bunk, i picked up a new Euro anthology comic called "Seriemix" in 2017, every issue is about 50 pages, and maybe 10 pages of actually good and interesting art, the rest is "art" and i have some reminiscence of old anthology comics which were 100+ or more pages EVERY issue, with superb art from Moebius, to Bane Kerac to Bisley and just average smut, violence, horror, comedy from all sorts of indie artists, that shit doesn't exist anymore nor do i believe it ever will again

it's dead, jim.

Because art isn't what it used to Ben and the writing is even worse.

Do yourself a favor and read every issue of heavy metal between 1977-1979 and then read even 1 issue from the last 5 years and tell me I'm wrong.

Anthologies are fairly expensive, you can argue that it's a lot of page count but if you only enjoy half the stories then what's the point?

Is it really a rip-off if the alternative is buying a 20-page story at half the price?

And even if you only enjoy half the stories then you're still getting entertainment worth more than you'd usually pay for if you bought in singles.

Meant for

That is from Requiem, as in, that comic about some SS officer dying and being "reborn" as a vampire in Hell and stuff?

It's pretty meh. Even with Grant Morrison as editor I cancelled my subscription

In the West that 54c magazine would cost something like $15

It's already happening. People don't buy anthologies, they just throw a few bucks to a bunch of Patreons.

Why buy multiple trash big two comics when you can donate to the creators directly?

>more than you'd usually pay for
Not so sure about that. But yeah 20 pages of quality is better than 2 good 10 page stories. Most anthologies don't have short stories anyway, they're 100 page stories broken down into 8-12 pages/month.

Yep. Made by Ledroit of Black Moon Chronicles fame and the art for Heroes of Might and Magic V (which UbiShit used only for the hero portraits and for nothing else).

That's a shame then.

buy this lads

I've been banned. Mods should be banned for that

Morrison ushered in a new high for it. he cut out the porn adds and replaced them with more comics. He brought in new talent and doubled down on the sex and weird stuff. He's now writing a column on how to practice magic, which is a neat insight into his head.

It hasn't been this good since the early 2000s

I discovered Bilal, Manara, Jodorworsky all though Heavy Metal

>taking a stranger's word for you it instead of easily pirating an issue yourself to decide
Jesus...

I get all my hot opinions on comic books from Himalayan snow-sculpting forums.

didn't there used to be dozens of these in Europe? what the fuck happened

I was actually mulling around the possibility of starting up a small digital anthology with some friends.Been looking at things like old Shonen Jumps, Heavy Metal, and the Titmouse Mook books. Figured we'd do a few comics, put editorials between them, throw it up online for a couple bucks. Maybe start a patreon to help fund it.

Is it really a hopeless endeavor? Would we be better off just doing a website like Dumm Comics? I just love the Anthology idea.

alan moore had an anthology started a few years ago, dont know what happened to that

Oh it shows.

do you sincerely think webcomics, digital first and quarterly anthologies that sell as few copies as monthly ongoings is "good"?

Like I get that you don't like Big 2 books but them existing doesn't change your enjoyment of other shit. Them not existing means the industry becomes as cheap as possible, which means digital with few and far between collections.

further more, so many of these creator owned projects only get made because the creator has or had a job at the big 2. if they were working accounting and barista jobs they'd have the same shitty output webcomic writers do.

You're talking about Image trash, not actual indie comics.

you're not responding because you have nothing to disprove what I've said and in fact you have no intention of doing so because you're likely more of a cartoonfag with zero stake in a comics discussion.

You sound mentally I'll.

Cinema Purgatorio?
That was pretty trash save for the actual Alan Moore stuff.

>Why aren't anthologies supported more?
They really only appeal to a niche set of consumers in an industry where it's already difficult to build and sustain buzz for anything that isn't from DC or Marvel. Even then, it's hard to sell them on adding 8 bucks onto their pull lists

Cinema Purgatorio wasn't an anthology, it was a dumping ground for stories Avatar Press apparently couldn't afford to publish separately.

>taking some strangers comment wholesale without doublechecking if his views are reflected in his self published manifesto
your own fault

>They really only appeal to a niche set of consumers in an industry where it's already difficult to build and sustain buzz for anything that isn't from DC or Marvel. Even then, it's hard to sell them on adding 8 bucks onto their pull lists

You need a clear theme for it. Saving grace of HM is its clear theme of 2000AD-inspired fantasy and sci-fi with boobs and porn in the mix. They can have a gallery of concept art of Mad Max Fury Road while simultaneously advertise hentai porn dvds on the next page, and still be sure their core readership likes both.

>2000AD-inspired fantasy and sci-fi with boobs and porn in the mix.

I mean it's more a Les Humanoids era Heavy Metal inspired since even 2000AD ( at least under Pat Mills) wanted to be an English Métal Hurlant.

I feel like Heavy Metal just doesn't have the same role of importance now that plenty of publishers are bringing over Euro comics to America. They're no longer the one place you had to go.

>doesn't respond
>resorts to calling me names
sure thing, sweetheart. I just told you why I think the big 2 shitting the bed is bad for all comics and you decided to tell me I was talking about Image trash to show how SUPERIOR your taste is. Fuck yourself.

But they can still be one good place to advertise them.

>simultaneously advertise hentai porn dvds on the next page
nope, based Morrison took that out and added in more comics

>Graham is a faggot that wants to kill off the comic industry so indie trash can flourish.
I'd love death of a floppy as main format.

It will remain so until people stop using webcomics for either gag strips or porn.
