How are American comic books superior to Japanese manga?

They are not.

The men are hotter.

What? You don't like skinny japanese lady boys?

I love both. When it comes to artsyle I find the way the Japanese draw girls more appealing. But western dudes look better. It’s always fun to see Manga reference comics and Comics reference manga.

yes they are

Comic books plots usually go beyond "I NEED TO GET STRONGER".

it's dumb pitting them agaist each other, they're different cultural takes on the same concept.

It's like asking whether frozen custard is superior to gelato.

They're in color.

That's because comics are written from the point of view of needing to keep going forever, manga is meant to have an end, so the power creep doesn't mean anything. Writers don't have to deal with the consequences of how strong they make their characters, there's no "and then what?" in manga.

That's because comic characters are written as strong as they need to be.

What are you talking about? Manga has everything

>Battle stories
>Adventure stories
>Drama stories
>Romance stories
>Comedy stories
>Porn stories
>Educational stories
>Historical stories
>Sports stories
>Sci-Fi stories
>Biographies
>Perverted but not quite porn stories
>Fantasy stories
>Mystery stories
>Slice of Life stories
>War stories
>Crime stories
>Religious stories
>Horror stories

And everything in between with an endless selection of each, written and read by everyone from amateur teenage boys to gnarled old women. That’s not to say that Western Comics lack amazing stories too (Sandman, Watchmen, Habibi, Fables, Maus, Blue is the Warmest Color, A Contract With God, Donald Duck, etc.) But 80% is just capeshit. And I say this as a capeshit lover too.

They are more collectable. That's about it.

And comics have endured doing that for 80 years. Wouldn't that mean "capeshit" is inherently superior?

Instead, we get "WE NEED HOPE AND JUSTICE!"

In some ways yes, in some ways no.

Comics has punisher, manga has Berserk. Berserk is kinda better.

Because comics can be 'slice of life' without ending up being generic moeshit. Not that mangoes can't avoid falling into that trap, but it definitely happens more often than not.

Because when an American comic book character ends up with the wrong character, the writers can rewrite the universe. But when a Japanese manga character ends up with the wrong character, we're suppose to accept it.

Also, most if not all American comic book females have lips.

Who said anything about “superiority”? Cape comics endured because of the nostalgia factor. A select group of people on the west read comic books. A very select group. In Japan EVERYBODY reads manga. Anime is considered rather kiddie though. Go figure.

Berserk looks so fucking good, I swear one day I'll read it.

color

They can usually break away from tropes more easily.

Manga is more heavily influenced by other manga, there's a distinctive style of storytelling, and its easier to find comics that break the mold than manga.

Also , color?

Progression in comic is usually usually spurned by some cosmic item that had activated or something like the life equation rather than real character development and any development there is quickly gets abandoned in an arc or two's time to return to the status quo.

I’m not getting you here. Most slice of life isn’t CGDCT.

>Manga is more heavily influenced by other manga
I've never heard a more retarded statement.

punisher and berserk aren't really that similar. They have similar themes but come to opposite conclusions.

>Who said anything about “superiority”?
I did. You think nostalgia is that much of a factor when the people who read it as kids are mostly dead because it's been 80 fucking years? Comics draw in new readers and keep older ones every day. Capeshit is superior because it still works since your grandparents were young, maybe before they were born.

Exactly. Status quo is God, and comics have been getting away with it for more than (I assume but it's a safe bet) twice your lifespan. The fact they keep readers and draw in new ones means what they're doing is right. Just look at Marvel, they tried to break from that and it didn't sell.

They are more relatable if your american but i wouldnt say superior just different

And not because the comics code ruined everything for everyone?

>capeshit
>shonenshit

If that was true why did people keep buying comics anyway?

I think he means thats why most comics are cape comics. The comic code banned almost any other kind of story

And if the comics code "ruined everything" how has capeshit still endured for so long? The best selling comics and most popular have always been superheroes. People like to gripe about capeshit but that doesn't change the fact it's a proven seller.

Pre comics code western, romance and crime comics were pretty popular and post comics code were almost nonexistent.

You realise he's not talking about sales but rather variety right? Finding comics that tell a story outside of capeshit is somewhat rare but capeshit in and of itself is derivative and tends to repeat plot lines with different characters or mcguffins.

>check wikipedia for comic sales
>fucking wan piss that started in the late 90s is 30 million less than batman that has unreliable source of total sales that started in the late 30s
>already surpassed spiderman
>German mickey mouse stands at top at 1 billion
Where the fuck did the german mouse get a billion sales?

And comics still sell quite well, so it looks like that loss, was no big loss.

Sales being entirely irrelevant to the conversation.

When you say "western comics", realize you mean any panel strip collection drawn in the entire western hemisphere. You're basically pitting a small island against Europe and both the Americas. 80%is definitely not capeshit.

Not him but he's talking specifically about ongoing stories.
Oneshots and newspapers comics aren't the same thing.

>Finding comics that tell a story outside of capeshit is somewhat rare
no it really isnt

>draw in new ones
LOL. Good one

Yes, it really is. At most you'll get problem of the day format comics like Garfield.

The people who work on them are treated better and tend not to literally work themselves to death?

the only manga i have any intention of reading

>manga is meant to have an end
Then why are so many still ongoing even though they started 40 years ago?

Manga industry give more creative freedom to the writers than the comic industry. That's what make mangas more creative. We have problems like shonen jump puting their finger in some manga and overmilking one franchise and the spamming of one single genre to make easy sucess (the current genre spam is isekai) but at the start any mangaka can try a shoot.

Sure, i pulled this out from my ass so, maybe i'm just saying dumb shit.

Fucking ten years on a boat
