I'm really going to need Superman to get better taste in music. How can one like Metallica, when Alice in Chains is "leagues" better.

Superman is into Metallica?

He only liked Metallica pre-Flashpoint, so I personally don't consider that canon anymore since I can't accept him having such shit taste

Fuck you, Sup Forums, metallica is great

*were great

You do realize the Pre-Flashpoint Superman is the current one, right?

But combined with the N52 one, so there are bound to be some differences.

Yes, I'm sure his taste in music is one.

Superman can hear Jason's bass.

And superman liking metallica fits the redneck farmer side.

He's not automatically a redneck because he's a farmer
He was a nerd outcast in school, really the only people he hung out with were his parents and Lana, and I doubt any of them were into Metallica

You seem to believe redneck is an insult. Go fuck yourself

Kys, redneck. You people are cancer.

That is not at all what I said

...it is? I mean I guess you can pull a nigger and make it "your word" but nowhere outside of Hicksville USA is redneck anything but derogatory

Which writer said that Superman like metallica?

Might have been Joe Kelly. Or Joe Casey. He was talking to 90's Superboy about the things nobody really KNOWS (or needs to know) about Superman or for that matter, Superboy.

I think it was Loeb or Kelly but I can't remember

Well regardless, that's some massive projection on the authors' part. Not saying metallica is shit. Honestly I've never listened to it at all. But how could any author possibly claim that superman is an explicit fan of anything that isn't very widely accepted as American cultural values (apple pie and such)?

Because that's a writer's job, and Superman doesn't need to be a stereotype who only likes stereotypical American things like a cartoon character?

>Superman doesn't need to be a stereotype who only likes stereotypical American things like a cartoon character?

Superman is the stereotypical and quintessential American Superhero. And he literally is a cartoon character.

And that's why Kelly writes Superman and you don't

>I can't accept him having such shit taste

Why? I think that kind of humanizes him a bit. Like when Bronze Age Superman put ketchup on steak.

Hey hey, he only did that to mess with Lois.

No I mean objectively, Superman is the stereotypical American Superhero. And he literally is a cartoon character."

He is the archetype. As a historical and cultural fact that's not really something you can argue.

That's not to say different writers haven't put their own personal spin on the character, but if it deviates too far from the archetype of superman as the "all-american" hero, such characterization very nearly always falls by the wayside after that writer is off the character.

>Yes, I'm sure his taste in music is one.
My sides

He represents the American IDEAL, not American culture.

I mean I like Metallica, it just makes me think of the kind of people who like monster trucks and cheap beer and cutting the sleeves off t-shirts.

I suppose I'm projecting and being biased but I see Superman as someone who would like Bob Dylan and 60's protest music, or big band and jazz, stuff his parents would have listened to. The more I think about it the more I think Metallica would be fitting for his personality, or at least something like And Justice For All.

Theres nothing wrong with loving 1980s Metallica.
Its the 90s shit thats bad taste
Alice in Chains was always meh

>He is the archetype. As a historical and cultural

Eh, I mostly agree, but the American Ideal and American Culture are mutually intertwined, reciprocal concepts.

The best ideal of superman is of someone who unites and brings hope to all Americans. Once you add character traits that are divisive (like types of music that not everyone likes or find actively distasteful), then you start to get away from the concept of superman. I mean one person's metallica is another person's gangster rap, is another person's broadway showtune.

As someone who grew up in Kansas and finds Superman to be one of his favorite heroes, I always thought it was weird that Superman had a fondness for Metallica; I always figured he'd be more of a fan of Golden Country, Folk, or Classic Rock.

The term you are thinking of is "white trash". Supes doesn't waste money on drugs and lotto tickets
Redneck is a socialist term originally.
Also literally anyone from a State like Kansas is technically a redneck on some level. Local culture is ultimately inescapable, I thought I was immune from its influence until I moved to the coast and discovered how rude outsiders are.
Also the non-political ones are really nice people.
t. West Virginia

And you would be more right than not. Superman is an optimistic character.

Metallica is many things, but I don't think it's terribly optimistic.

Superman liking Metallica just means that whoever was writing superman liked metallica, and either didn't understand or care about some core aspects of superman.

Not the previous poster, but as someone who understands the difference between "white trash" and redneck and the types of people who self identify with those labels, the greater culture still uses the the term redneck and "white trash" fairly interchangeably and derogatorily.

>Superman liking Metallica just means that whoever was writing superman liked metallica, and either didn't understand or care about some core aspects of superman.

given the era this piece of information is changes the context.

>80s
>I like metallica, so superman likes metallica
>90s
>metallica sucks, so superman should like metallica to show how lame he is
>Superman in 00s onwards
>wouldn't it be funny if superman like dad-rock music like metallica.

I have to agree that it was a writer insert and not one that fit Superman; since Superman, with the help of multiple Batmen, was guarding a heavy metal concert, and if iirc, disliked the music they were playing, which would be odd for someone into heavy metal.

I agree that aspects of Kansas' culture are going to be ingrained in him regardless of who he associates with there, but only to a certain extent.
Superman a pretty liberal dude; even though he has a few pragmatic values he learned from living on a farm.

Metallica isn't really pessimistic either. Their lyrics can cover grim topics but not really in a cynical way. When they sometimes cover political topics, they're usually just anti-war or critical of oligarchy and corruption, things that Superman has believed in every era of his existence except during and directly following WWII.
I don't necessarily agree that Superman would like Metallica in terms of musical style, but nothing about them or their lyrics contradicts known aspects of his personality.

Mettallica is thrash metal for one thing.

Sup Forums please.

I know right, it's kind of a stealth Sup Forums thread. But kind of not.

I'm just saying that not all metal sounds alike. No reason to get defensive.

Yeah but trying to make Superman likeable to every American is a recipe for boredom
The dude has to have tastes and they might as well be rural Kansas tastes. Besides, country boy trying to adapt to a claustrophobic Metropolis that might as well be made of paper to him is a great concept
Have you ever drove through rural Kansas? When I did, I immediately Understood why they chose the area as Supes home. Those wide open spaces remind me of the Ocean, the world feels more magical there, where you can see so far that the world seems to disappear and yet is extremely present

He said thrash, not trash.

Because AiC is for Batman

Not being defensive. Metallica may be classified as "thrash" metal now, but when I was growing up, it was just heavy metal/rock.

That's a great way to view my state and one I totally agree with. Kansas country, with the aesthetic orange/blue/purple/red sunsets with nothing but stretches and stretches of land is an amazing beauty.

As far as rock music goes, Clark seems more like a 70's rock/80's hair metal guy to me.

>Not being defensive.
You clearly were since you immediately jumped to the conclusion that I'm a Sup Forums poster.

That's a nice idea, but I don't actually know if Siegel and Shuster ever went to kansas before creating him. I could be wrong but I think they just chose Kansas because it's the middle of nowhere/heartland America.

No all the San Fran bay metal bands took influence from thrashcore punk, the term was in use during the 80s, you just didn't have your finger on the pulse of the scene

here's a tip: people can like multiple things at once

Not on the internet or when talking to teenagers or imageboard users. You can always tell whose a Sup Forums user IRL because no matter how hard they try to hide it the attitude problem seeps through

>redneck Superman berates Batman for using automatic transmission in the Batmobile

Originally they didn't have him grow up in Kansas at all, he was raised in a Metropolis orphanage. Smallville, Ma and Pa Kent, and all of that was invented for the Superboy comic in the 50s.

He probably stopped following Metallica around St.Anger, thats when everybody dropped Metallica.
Is Wally still a Rush fan? Haven't heard references to that in a while.

So basically you are saying Clark should be into Pantera?

If you're a libby soyboy faggot, maybe.

Mainly because they're faggots.

You're retarded. They were thrash until the Black Album. I don't know when the fuck you think you grew up

Why can't we just let everyone, both fictional and non-fictional, enjoy any music they want?

Nigga i love aic, but he just doesn't seem like the type that would listen any of them.

Yeah people really do not understand how much of the mythos actually comes from Superboy

Specifically he likes And Justice for All, which is a better album than anything Alice in Chains put out
