2000AD Judge Dredd

The thread yesterday died before I could storytime this. Posting 'Young Giant' one of my fave Dredd + cadet stories.

The backstory you need to know for this is the original Judge Giant was a cadet passed by Dredd, became one of his most reliable partner Judges, and was killed just before the Apocalypse War.

This is his son - and no, Judges shouldn't have sons.

He isn't a clone?

Nope! That tends to be reserved for Dredd and his ilk.

Kid's first stabbing. Remember, folks, keep the thumb on the blade and stab upward!

One thing I like about this story is how procedural it is. Kind of like the movie in that respect.

Net busted for a minute.

Is the syringe in panel 6 that stuff that makes perps experience thousands of years of confinement in a short amount of time?

Fuuuck yeah, this story. And Ezquerra's fully painted artwork at its most gorgeously lurid.

Look at that lime-lemon Dredd. Fucking amazing.

Sorry anons my connection's just dying on me.

I love how dominant the colour is in this for sure. Makes it even more distinctive when it breaks back to normal too.

Nah, that's the time stretcher and it's a machine. That's just regular truth serum.

And that's it! Giant goes on to have a long and illustrious career with Justice Dept.

The final page of this story is basically the same message as that "Dredd speaks to the Academy of Law admittees" story from the last thread, but I think it lands a lot better here.

The next time I have a long streak of time and a stable internet connection I think I'm gonna storytime The Dead Man > Necropolis, so keep an eye out. It's from a similar timeframe and this is honestly just a really nice period of Dredd.

Thanks for the storytime, OP. It's funny how they've been doing the "Dredd grooms young cadets to take over safeguarding the city when he's gone" subplot for literally decades now. Like, Giant Jr. is a grown man by the time Beeny shows up.

Yeah. I dig Beeny's initial story a lot too though. It's more of an investigation, and Dredd is a pretty confrontational with her whereas he's outright fatherly with Giant Jr. here.

You think when Wagner dies and they publish the last Judge Dredd story, 2000AD will start over with a clone of Dredd?

I used to story time Dredd epics back around the time the 2012 flick came out (some of you might remember them). When we get an air date for the Mega-City One, I feel I'll have to start doing it again.

First up, knock on wood and bite your tongue. Secondly, I don't think so, no. Rebellion has already expressed no interest in Wagner's DKR-style "last Dredd story", and he hasn't written it any further either, so it seems they're more interested in keeping the old fuck around.
Maybe if things got *really* dire sales-wise and they had to come up with something to shake things up, but that's unlikely.

I just meant 2000AD would want to keep the setting even if they retire Dredd with Wagner's passing in 40-50 years, if not more, depending on advances in medical technology.

Oh yeah, absolutely. Dredd and his strip are still their (relative) biggest cash cows, and it's the one with the largest number of writers. I don't think they'll retire Dredd, what with that story last year about him getting a full rejuve job, but it's even less likely that they'll retire MC-1 as a whole.

Showing off bump.
