Most of these are not only inconsequential but don't even happen in most 2010s cartoons >Status quo Ah yes, something that didn't exist in cartoons pre 2010 that regularly destroyed their entire universe, blew up their homes, suffered what should be permanent injuries, gained powers that never show up again, get kicked out by their owners, or just generally cause a problem that will inevitably fix itself by the end of the episode with no permanent repercussions. >Flash animation Most cartoons aren't animated in flash, don't use puppet rigs. and aren't motion tweened >Episodic plot Besides this not being true, even before the 2010 most cartoons were episodic. >2nd degree writing Depends on the show >11 minutes episodes Still something most cartoons pre2010 did >Food jokes Butter toast This is honestly the only real complaint about modern cartoons that is true across almost all of them
Wyatt Ward
The magic sword thing? Rapunzel, the quirky girl knight 3d cartoon
Brayden Flores
I hate how animesque a lot of them are.
Oliver Ross
3 Your recipe for 2010 cartoons is something that is in 3 not even popular cartoons?
Sebastian Butler
If by a lot you mean like two or three.
Matthew Hill
>Present a base for drawing your own character >Someone posts theirs >"omfg no fucking get out"
Wouldn't "Most of these" imply the majority of them, yet you only pointed out a quarter of them?
Evan Mitchell
"Most of these" meant the rest of them, >Grapling hook >Unicorn >Reference to other cartoons >Slightly SOL >"Follow your dreams"/"Believe in yourself" >Rapid-fire lines These are the ones I was calling inconsequential, the ones that weren't (but were also stupid) I responded to specifically
Camden Wright
That makes more sense
Hunter Wright
It's the extreme quirkiness I despise.
Luis Wilson
That's what happens when you raise an entire generation on fanfiction, deviantart and memes.
Charles Fisher
I was raised on that stuff and I hate the shit OP is talking about.
Benjamin Ward
>Starts off cute and quirky but it's actually dark and has DEEPEST LORE
Xavier Harris
>Episodic plot It's done like this because shows usually aren't played in chronological order. Has to be interesting to watch an episode alone. >Ineffective villain If you mean a gag villain (Ludo from Star Vs. or Lord Hater from Wander), then it's usually to create a villains status quo so the steaks can be raised later with an actual serious villain (Toffee, Dominator). >Grappling hook I've only seen this once or twice in modern cartoons >Unicorn A magical fantasy beast in cartoons? GASP >Reference to other cartoons If it's enough to detract from the scene and doesn't add anything, it's shit. >Slightly SOL I agree with this one. So many cartoons are aiming for SOL shit and it's maddening. >Shipping There has always been some sort of romance in cartoons, it's fun to write. I will admit it gets a bit sick if it becomes the main focus. >Self deprecating humor That's alot of todays humor, but I agree it's not good >Relationship drama Easy way to make the illusion of adding conflict >No stakes whatsoever Goes with SOL, but alot of cartoons with even a mix of something else have steaks. Don't know what your talking about. >2nd degree writing >Flash animation Both of these based on the show >Random naming Don't know what you mean by this >Weeaboo undertones Goes back to referencing other cartoons >10 minutes episodes I agree this is a problem >"geek culture" No idea what you mean >Status quo Gives the viewer a sense of normality. Everything can't change every episode. >"Follow your dreams"/"Believe in yourself" Nothing wrong with believing in yourself user >Rapid-fire lines Please explain >Author mouthpiece I'll agree here >Medieval fantasy There are almost no medieval fantasy stories, what are you talking about? >Food jokes Easy humor
OP, most of these are oddly specific.
Josiah Garcia
>Inefective vilain
how many cartoons ended with the villain winning so bad it made the whole show pointless?
>Episodic plot >Inefective vilain >Slightly SOL >Self deprecating humor >Relationship drama >Flash animation >Random naming >Weeaboo undertones >Follow your dreams/Believe in yourself >Medieval fantasy >Status quo 2010s cartoons weren't the first you buffoon.
>reference to other cartoons >10 minutes episodes Now you're just picking cherries.
You must admit before 2010 these were the exception rather than the rule.
Zachary Davis
let us apply it to a random 90s cartoon
>Episodic plot darkwing duck was episodic >>Inefective vilain darkwing alternated between joke villains and real villains >>Grapling hook dakrwing had one >>Unicorn surprisingly, cannot remember one wouldnt put it past them though >>Reference to other cartoons very much so, due to being disney >>Slightly SOL only very slightly, since gosalyn occasionally had normal girl problems >>Shipping there was a minor subplot >>Self deprecating humor a whole lot, since darkwing was a parody of superheroes, and would spend 4/5ths being an idiot and 1/5th getting dangerous >>Relationship drama of the "dating catwoman" variety >>No stakes whatsoever depended on the episode nd degree writing subjective >>Flash animation did not exist yet >>Random naming >>Weeaboo undertones minutes episodes 2 11-minute episodes >>"geek culture" this came out before marvel movies, and so was indulging a whole lot of obscure comic references before it was cool >>Status quo aye, very much so >>"Follow your dreams"/"Believe in yourself" parodied >>Rapid-fire lines darkwing was a very dramatic fellow, to say the least >>Author mouthpiece none, but gosalyn was the obvious stand in for the kids watching >>Medieval fantasy modern day >>Food jokes when they were hungry
Asher White
>There are almost no medieval fantasy stories, what are you talking about? The usual Troll/Dwarf/Orc/Elf/Vampire/Goblin/Princess/Wizard/etc... combo
Joshua Morgan
>The usual Troll/Dwarf/Orc/Elf/Vampire/Goblin/Princess/Wizard/etc... combo Then you mean fantasy unless it's during the age of castles and the like. Even then, not super common.
Leo Thomas
Quality thread.
Easton Bell
I don't think anything deserves to be called 'medieval' unless it reproduces the aesthetic of the medieval period by portraying a society with the values and technology associated with it.
Kayden Parker
Are you a fucking underage? A lot of those were normal in cartoons since ever
>SJW pandering >Made by millenials
>Memes
Jackson Green
>hyper detailed meme face attained using wrinkles and ridges
Lucas Lee
What are you talking about, that one's been used in a lot of comedic cartoons outside of the 2010s
Zachary Campbell
>people whining online like little bitches
Josiah Powell
>>"geek culture" more of SNS geek culture
Tyler Green
So, basically everything that's been a staple for cartoons since the 90's.
Christian Torres
It's much more fun when you mix and match two of those items at once. >Grappling hook unicorn >Medieval weeaboo fantasy undertones >Ineffective villain relationship drama >Rapid-fire shipping lines >Reference to other self-deprecating humor cartoons
Angel Garcia
Tell me more about your character "Cal" there.
Connor Collins
Why people say that its Calarts fault when 70% of these shows are not made by Calarts people?
Chase Green
I don't think that works well in most tv shows, but more movies should do this, it makes any happy ending feel deserved.
Jackson Morales
80's tv cartoons were full of orphans going through bad shit.
Michael Murphy
I believe the proper term is "scapegoat."
Tyler Robinson
Most of these are either not prevalent in 2010s cartoons or were always prevalent in TV cartoons. Some of these aren't even inherently bad.
Adrian Martin
These days it doesn't really mean "creator went to calarts", it's just a collective name for simple, boring and safe art styles.
Colton Hughes
>Grapling hook this isn't a thing. Stop posting it.
Nathaniel Cooper
Quirky girls
Luke Taylor
well what's an unsafe art style?
Ren & Stimpy? Modern Spongebob?
Kayden Bell
Yeah but you're not making a cartoon for tv.
Noah Rivera
>Flash being used as an adjective rather then knowing its just a tool and only is utilized as well as the artists using it. >>"b-but tween animation"
Flash animation = animation made with Flash. Which often mean "puppet" animation and simplified shapes.
Jason Parker
>puppet animation >simplified shapes that's not mutually exclusive nor is the reason because of flash. Just because shows take liberties in cutting labor costs with easy to draw/animate techniques doesn't mean that's the set standard. Any non brainlet will tell you to watch Motorcity for an example.
The thing i hate most is that most are not even targeted at children anymore. They know their core audience is 20 something neck or leg beards because kids cant sit and watch an actual cartoon when theres a gorillion videos on youtube. That way, they try to make really infantile drama to show how grown up or whatever it is, while older shows did just that and better because they didnt aim for that. Cartoons today are fandom hives, not something for a kid to watch on saturday morning
Don’t forget quirky exclamations like “Cool beans!” or “Sweet sauce!” Adventure Time really fucked up cartoons

Quality Thread. Let's add on to it
>LGBT rep and undertones >most or all male characters are evil/losers/morons >"""Comfy""" aka boring episodes >Trying too hard to become a meme in order to gain viral popularity >String arms >Stoner and Surreal vibes
>Chiptunes/bouncy synth based soundtrack >References to Neon Genesis Evangelion for no purpose other than to say “Hey, remember NGE? Because WE do!” >Romantic drama that sucks out any and all enjoyment from the show >Child/teenage male character is voiced by a grown man >References to outdated memes from 2009 or something >References to aspects of “fandom culture” (ie some character mentions fanfiction they’ve been working on) >Garishly bright/pastel colors
Low effort and easy to be generic. You have to be extremely lucky or extremely good to make good sounding chiptunes/synths, like Fox and Moroder
Gavin Lee
Pretty sure those existed before Adventure Time also. Don't even recall any current shows with those.
Samuel Cruz
Kek
Jace Adams
Fucking agreed. Especially the music
Nathaniel Hernandez
>Chiptunes/bouncy synth based soundtrack God I hate this. The only memorable soundtrack I can remember from the past few years is the WOY ost, and they didn't even release most of that shit.
Adrian Jackson
>Shipping
does people not realize that this is something the fandoms of shows do and not the show itself?
Connor Jones
We get it. You’re a manchild. Go back to Disney Junior.
