The Thing's flyer was an actual, well, thing from the comics. Think it was mostly seen in his solo books, otherwise he was in one of the four pods of the fantasticar.
But yeah, it wasn't created out of thin air for the toy line. Don't have access to my comics here, the closest pic I can find is this one which admittedly does not do a good job showing it off.
