absolutely not, it looks awful
wes anderson tends to be formulaic, but this is just ridiculous. I remember when I first saw the trailer thinking "its like someone tried to cram every wes anderson cliche into a single movie" and sure enough it was him doing it.
and now I've seen the trailer about 50 fucking times, so no I'm not fucking excited
Curious what gave it the pg-13 rating.
Maybe they dropped the "cuss" thing they did with Fantastic Mr. Fox and it's that rating cause cursewords.
But yeah I'm looking forward to it. We keep getting more and more good stopmotion.
>Comes out this Friday
Not anymore, it's a limited release for a few more weeks. Only opening in 27 theaters worldwide this weekend.
Why? Are they that concerned about flopping? The only other animated movie coming out this week is Sherlock Gnomes.
Who invited Sup Forums.
No because that's how Fox Searchlight normally releases movies.
Yup, only five cities this week (New York, LA, San Fransisco, DC, and Austin)
A lot more of the bigger ones are coming next week though, I know here in Minneapolis it's opening next Wednesday, and it's supposed to be wide by the originally announced April 20 date
"Rated PG-13 for thematic elements and some violent images"
It's really typical for Fox Searchlight movies to get staggered releases, Grand Budapest Hotel opened the same way and it made $175 million so it's not a death knell by any means.
It could have something to do with the fact Fantastic Mr. Fox flopped when it opened wide though, and that this is even more niche given it's not being marketed as kid-friendly like that one
I remember wanting to watch Birdman and I had to wait 2 weeks for it to come to a local theater.
The Shape of Water took 3 weeks and I saw near Christmas.
I had to drive an hour away to see Birdman.
I'm not so starving for animation that I'll be excited for a film that looks awful just because its animated.
Lucky for me it played at a mall that was really close to where I was living at the time.
>shape of water
still mad that won best picture, what a piece of crap that was
>Violent images
I hope to see a dog bite someone's face.
Or perhaps one of the characters die (even if not onscreen SUPER HARD offscreen like they did War for the Planet of the Apes).
Do you judge every movie so harshly on a quick trailer?
tbqh none of the best picture nominees this decade deserved a nomination
Kek. I love Anderson but this is pretty true.
>tfw gonna watch PacRim2 instead despite what the reviews say
>inb4 WE WUZ KAIJU and
>Bayformers
I'll watch it on DVD or netflix instead its not even going to show at my theatre anyway
frankly, grand budapest hotel was the only film of his I really enjoyed
now that's just a ridiculous overstatement
It's not bad, it's a solid 6/10. Charlie Day fucking the kaiju brain he keeps in his apartment was a little weird but overall his character was one of the better parts of it, especially him being a goofy mad scientist villain. Action is stellar too.
when it makes it look this bad and cliche, yeah I guess I do
isn't that what trailers are for?
from the trailer it looked a bit too much like the transformers movies, is that not the case?
The action is a lot better in the actual movie; it has more weight than the trailer made it seem, I think the marketing stuff sped up a lot of the action footage. The first major fight in the movie is a little too "Bayformers" for my taste but the final battle is a really fun ride. Suffers from what the first movie did though and killed off all the Jaegers, again. Kaiju have a lot of character this time too, mostly because it focuses on the three (not counting the fusion and the cyborg, pic related).
Given it's animated they could probably get away with an on-screen mauling in a PG-13 if they fought hard enough.
Ratings are starting to become more and more meaningless, nothing gets a G anymore and theyother day I saw Your Name and was shocked it got a PG, given just barely offscreen nudity (and full onscreen teenage butt in panties), sexual jokes and implications, frank discussion of thousands of people dying (and showing the explosion on-screen) and the general tone in the second half of the film and the fact it's clearly made for teenagers. Totally within the realm of an 80s PG, but as far as the modern day goes it doesn't make sense for it to be in the same category as Moana and Despicable Me.
DESU that's probably near the bottom with Darjeeling for me, I think Rushmore is his best though I've seen Life Aquatic the most times (its structure is sloppy but the comedy and visuals are great and it's a nice lazy afternoon movie). Fantastic Mr. Fox is also up there given I'm a stopmo devotee
Her design is so odd yet endearing
I wonder if there's anyone on the planet with an actual white afro like that
well damn son
>PG-13
Does it have dogs fucking or something?
>"Rated PG-13 for thematic elements and some violent images"
Any other director/studio would've cut it down to a PG the most.
>Maybe they dropped the "cuss" thing they did with Fantastic Mr. Fox and it's that rating cause cursewords.
I guess Anderson originally wanted the characters to swear but the Dahl estate didn't allow it, so they compromised with the "cuss" thing.
Odds are the general story/tone/atmosphere make it decidedly not a kids' movie, though I agree that had it not been Wes Anderson this would've had a much harder time getting made, not to mention getting a marketing push. Fantastic Mr. Fox's marketing tried to court the family audience but it most likely only managed to fit into that mold because the book it was based on was, after all, for children.
Once the Fox deal goes through Disney will own all of his movies besides Bottle Rocket though, and it's up in the air what he'll do after that. My guess is he'll probably go to Sony Pictures Classics because Disney just straight-up doesn't do smaller movies anymore.
Never heard anything along these lines (and it's such a quirky thing that seems intrinsic to the film's universe which would almost make it a positive case of censorship), but I don't have the Criterion version with all those new extras
Must be pretty mild though, in the UK it got a PG. The local censors' site mentions quite a bit about the content, under Insight.: bbfc.co.uk/releases/isle-dogs-film
Well that's fucking gay, I actually convinced some of my friends to go see it this Friday.
>More limited release/select theater bs
Why is this still a thing?
Because for a movie like this, a sustained hype and box office longevity gives them a much better chance of making money than if they tried to make all their money at once, the latter being the typical Hollywood business model for the last couple decades.
ALL movies opened this way before Jaws, and pretty much any smaller-budget movie still does this nowadays. The goal is to keep people talking over a period of weeks rather than have one burst of articles followed by a quick fizzle-out.
There's also something to be said about desire created by unavailability, which has been working pretty well for Nintendo
Guess it's going to end up waiting for dvd rentals or netflix then. Local theater probably isn't going to end up showing it at all.
It's supposed to expand wide on April 20 (which was the originally announced release date), unless you live in bumfuck nowhere it should be playing somewhere around within the next month
If it was something like IFC Films, it's because they're releasing niche stuff that only rarely deserved a wide release, and they're a small company. The only movies they've done that even got a wide release were Boyhood and My Big Fat Greek Wedding
However since this is Fox, I have no idea why they give it such a small release.
By the way, this limited release stuff started with The Deer Hunter. They were the first huge example of doing this.
Sorry I stopped paying attention to poodle hair since there is a much hotter Goth Girl on the right.
Yeah, but it will bomb in the box office because it's simply extremely visually unappealing for the average moviegoer.
So i'll enjoy it assuming we'll not get any more stop motion from Wes Anderson
>Yup, only five cities this week (New York, LA, San Fransisco, DC, and Austin)
I'm from New Orleans and I'm seeing it this Friday.
Wes Anderson has only one particular style of storytelling and directing but damn if his movies aren't entertaining.
I like that balanced rusty fishing boat.
Went to theater couple weeks ago and this trailer was in front of film as soon as it finished group of early 20somethings said "that looks fucking stupid" *external laughing after saying that*
I hate people that don't realize certain art forms like old school stop motion are still struggling to stay alive with all this CG tech around now
WHO THE FUCK CARES
LOL
ITS JUST A FUCKING KIDS MOVIE BECAUSE ITS AAAAAAAAAANIIIIMATED
Those are called "normies" and they aren't the market for Wes Anderson movies.
Stop motion is doing pretty okay all things considered (arguably better than theatrical traditional in the west), we've already at two movies this year and plus LAIKA will live forever because their president is Nike founder's son with billions of dollars at his disposal. Though they've yet to announce any concrete details whatsoever on their next movie which was originally slated for this May (and supposed to be more adult and very different from their previous work), makes me wonder if there's been retooling.
I wonder if the My Life as a Courgette people are doing anything new also, since that was fairly successful movie
Another stop motion bomb
what's the explanation for idris elba's character having a son
despite the first movie nor any if the comics saying he had any family other than having a sister and mako being his adoptive daughter
I literally cant find a showing near me and its almost Thursday. Im hoping to god my local regal will show it friday.
It might not be playing until next week, it's showing up here next wednesday
Literally read a book. Limited releases make sense and are a driving force behind how specialty and indie cinema releases can find success.
where do you live?
she's punk
>think we're getting /ss/ with journalism chick
>she's actually one of his schoolmates
WEAK
to be fair, they're 100% right
Just watch The Plague Dogs.
The purpose of a trailer, quick or long, is to sell whoever is watching on going to see the movie. So, watching this trailer, I got no idea what I'm getting into other than a stop motion movie that looks like shit. So you want me to spend money purely on faith?
Interesting, because I think that movie sucks. I love Bottlerocket, Rushmore and Tannenbaums. I think Moonrise and Fantastic are good too. Never seen Darjeeling. Don't like Life Aquatic either.
