People liked Starco because it was, in their words, "cute and perfect". In the first two seasons both characters were generally likable and deeply supportive of each other no matter what. It was a special kind of friendship that people grew an attachment to because there was no bullshit, just two people caring for each other's well being. Even when Marco was trying to go for Jackie, Star simply sucked it up and helped him. No sabotage, no drama, she was just there for him.
But now all of that is gone and replaced entirely with bullshit. The setup for thus season was contrived as fuck, and Star and Marco's relationship now is abysmal at best. It's no longer two friends caring for each other, it's a Princess with her own personal whipping boy. By the time the kiss actually happened, the relationship has been so utterly fucked that it takes all of the emotion out of what should've been a powerful moment a season ago. It's practically a Phyrric victory.
