You are working under the assumption that we don't know the drugs are coming in, and that we aren't tracking them.

Refined nuclear materials can be picked up from a pretty far distance away by scintillation detectors. They give off a huge amount of radiation, and will throw off normal average background readings with such devices.

Radioactive material is heavy AF and so is its correct storage equipment. Not to mention that Geiger counters can be placed inside walls, under the road and in the roof and have preprogrammed alarms for specific spikes of different gamma and x-rays that mean Radioactive potassium in bananas is ignored but U and Pl etc set off the alarm even when hidden in other Radioactive material.
Also drugs are made from relatively common chemicals where as nuclear material must be mined and refined and can easily be detected by satellites.

Moving large amounts of radioactive material around is difficult and for it to be refined and processes to a point where it isnt taking up heaps of space would require the infrastructure the idiots are too busy blowing up.

I used to work in international logistics and am fairly aware of how this happens. The majority of bulk loads of drugs coming into this country come in through shipping containers owned or leased by major (fortune 500) companies. It works like this. GE has a plant that manufactures certain machine parts in latin america. The drug cartels confront the plant manager and tell him that they are going to place their product in the 200 containers he is shipping into the US next month or they will kill his family. Manager complies. Shipment gets to port. There are a number of ways that customs inspects containers, from a quick look in to removing every declared item and inspecting the actual container itself. Basically because of manpower and time only a small percentage of containers can get inspected at all and 200 full containers every month from a company with a rep (and power) like GE is not a priority and they are not going to do a full inspection on 200 containers.
