Because the archetype isn't interesting. It's a predictable one dimensional character.
Without selfish desires or internal conflict, they're essentially just a feel good plot device rather than a person.

Not saying the archetype can't be done well but many writers are so focused on making their character heroic that they end up with an character that's flawless, bland, and boring.

Does Superman's rogue gallery even include a magician?

Superman is ridiculously powerful. He's invulnerable, he has super-senses bringing him close to omniscience, he has superspeed bring him close to omnipresense and he's so ridiculously strong and has all the other bullshit power that he's close to omnipotence.

It's really difficult to put him in the situation where he is at disadvantage, but has potential (If he works on it) to overcome it that doesn't involve macguffin rocks and even more retardedly powerful villain who has even deadliest laser eyes and isn't even more retardedly strong.

It can be done, sure. But nobody should be in position to have to do it. Everybody should've known better than to have someone so powerful as their hero, but they are stuck with Superman because they write for DC.

The problem is you are seeing Superman as "he's a hero who has to be challenged" Superman is a symbol, a plot point. He is the ultimate form of heroism and the American spirit. An immigrant who fights for truth and justice, an unmoving, unflinching hero who devotes his life to helping others, and is incorruptible in his ideals and morality. To some people that boring and they want Superman to be weaker, more vulnerable, but thats not what Superman is, Superman is the quintessential hero, the man who arrives when the chips are down and no one else can win the day, to beat evil and save the innocent.

Benjamin Ortiz
Benjamin Ortiz

So Superman is a deus ex machina? That's his raison d'etre?

I don't think he works very well as a symbol either, because being superstrong and superfast and super everything is not part of anyone's experience, immigrant or not. He isn't really any kind of self-made man who came to America for American dream, worked hard and shit. He was just born the way he is.

Cameron Campbell

Depends on how you do it.

Attached: wander.png (37 KB, 457x474)

He's not just a symbol of immigration though, he's a symbol of heroism, heroism that cannot be defeated, heroism that can overcome any villain. Superman at his core is idealism in physical form, in a world where heroes are very rare and the ones that exist don't amount to much. Superman is a hero who can accomplish big things and change the world, and won't be threatened or beaten down by corrupt or evil individuals.

The thing is that people keeps seeing Superman as a kind of Goku. A guy whos main plot is to win a fight, to simply defeat the enemy and to show that he can't be defeated. Basically a plot about defending himself.

Superman is not abou that, neither a plot point. His stories are about him protecting his fellow humans, His world.

It's not about resisting his enemies attacks and wining because, you know, he's Superman. It's about the problem of, having all that power that makes him invincible doesn't means at all that he can save everybody.

I liked the monologue in JLA when he said he lives in a world made of paper, or the comic where the atomic bomb blew everyone but him. Yes, he survived the explosion but he could do nothing but bear all his friends deaths. What the fuck matters if he's strong to survive? What matters to him is the safety of everybody else.

I'm not so sure about that, I think most people get that he's protecting the world and people it's just from what i've seen most people get annoyed at how equipped Superman is to deal with it all, even super hearing alone is crazy.

Are you retarded? Superman is one of the most lucrative IPs on Earth.

Where the fuck did this meme come from that the Superman brand is struggling? It's older than everyone on this forum and its still printing books, making movies, and selling action figures.

The thing about Superman and other capes is that they're action/mystery/adventure characters capable of being slotted into a variety of plots. You can have Superman in a big punch out with an alien god. You can also have Superman try to convince a race of aliens to abandon their dying planet. You can also have Superman take his family on a vacation to Washington DC.

Part of why Superman has survived so long as a character is that he's adaptable as fuck. He's not a shonen character. There's more stories you can tell with him besides CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG BUT ARE YOU ASKING FOR A CHALLENGE?

Superman is challenged. It's just that his challenges aren't always "can Superman finally beat this big mother fucker".

One of the best Superman runs of all time was Joe Kelly's run where Superman said he was a pacifist and NEVER THREW A SINGLE PUNCH.

Just look at the Silver Age where Superman got really big, so big Lois and Jimmy and Superboy had books. He rarely fought anyone. He would have adventures where he'd find a lost robot from Krypton or a strange boy with powers like himself or red kryptonite would turn him into a lion-man and he'd have to find how to make the best of a situation.

Superman isn't a gladiator. He's an adventurer.
