Bookscan 2017 top750

comicsbeat.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/EDIT-BookScan-17-Top-750.htm

>Incredibly, this is the fifteenth annual report of something that is hard to exactly perceive and understand: the size and shape of the sales of graphic novels and trade paperbacks through the book store market, as seen through the prism of BookScan.

>Some preamble:
>“Direct Market” stores (also known as “your Local Comics Shop”) buy much of their material for resale from Diamond Comics Distributors (though, not, by any means, all of the material your LCS has for sale – many DM stores are also buying from book-market wholesalers, or directly from publishers). While many DM stores have Point-of-Sales (POS) systems, because our market buys non-returnable what we track in our side of the industry is what sells-in to the store, not what sells-through to the eventual consumer. In a very real way, this means that the DM store owner is the actual customer of the publisher, as opposed to the end consumer.
>The bookstore market, however, buys their material semi-returnable, where they can send back some portion of titles that don’t sell (but not, usually, all unsold product). Because of this, sell-through is the data that is tracked and trended. Bookstores that have POS systems are able to report their sales to BookScan, a subsidiary of The NPD Group (they bought it from Nielsen).

>Raina dethrowned by Dav Pilkey

comfy

>Clearly, the first thing you can’t help but notice is that all twenty of the Top Twenty are books aimed at younger readers – it was just eighteen last year, and fifteen the year before You have to hit #23 before you reach a book aimed at adults (“Persepolis”), #29 before you hit a book aimed at adults that could be considered DM-driven (“Saga” v7), and a staggering #36 before you reach something that that is a superhero comic (“Batman: The Killing Joke”).
Damn, now we know why DC Zoom and Ink are a thing. How the fuck is TKJ still so fucking high? Who doesn’t have that book yet?

>Kids” comics is absolutely the hottest demographic of the moment, reminding me in any ways of pre-Direct Market times when comics were on the newsstands and the audience was assumed to turn over every several years. One difference between then and now is that when those kids turn over, Pilkey and Telegemeier and all of the rest of these authors will still be waiting for the next incoming group of kids because these are permanent formats, not transitory ones like periodicals were.
Kinda funny reading all the bitching about the kid imprints from DC in light of this. Dido knows what he’s doing.

>Yang above Bendis
Pisses me off that Bendis is the one who gets to do whatever the fuck he wants while Yang had to tie in his run to other shit, despite Yang being a more successful author than Bendis. Also how the fuck is Marvel doing so fucking poorly when they’re such a huge success in the mainstream? They need to pull their heads out of their asses.

Attached: 9E93A267-B9E0-49E4-960A-D36925440032.png (433x325, 17K)

I do not understand how Marvel does so poorly. Dropping from 5th last year to 7th even though they have a shitton of normie popularity. Like how do you have marketing that is THAT BAD while being owned by Disney?

7,696 CIVIL WAR II BENDIS BRIAN MICHAEL

I was wondering why this beat out Millar's but then I remembered that they finally released the collected edition just last November. But that does seem weird that Millar's Civil War is so low on the chart.

14,474 BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT: MASTE MILLER FRANK
I guess we know why they’re letting him write Superman: Year One. I hope he does a good job, Supes could use the boost.
>229 11,079 DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH JOHNS GEOFF
It’s fucking crazy to me that this is still selling so well.

His arc that didn't directly have crossover shit was actually fucking good too. Honestly he doesn't even need DC so they need to start treating him better or he'll leave.

Marvel just does not have any evergreens, but I don't get why they haven't been able to force something into one by now.

They’re terrible about trades and it pisses me off and makes me happy at the same time. Their recent trash shouldn’t sell well, but I also want Marvel to improve their sales because it’s good for the industry as a whole.

DC having over just over twice the number of titles on the Top 750 (101 compared to Marvel's 50) yet only being 5% ahead in dollar sales compared to Marvel just goes to show how much more expensive Marvel collected editions are.

Really glad to see that Dav Pilkey still has it after Captain Underpants.

I expected better from the WW stuff, like at least one at 20k+. Seems like only existing fans bought trades last year with no real boost from the movie. Strange for DC.

It really just seems like they could throw together some kind of classic Iron Man collection and force it into popularity. Doesn't have to be something new. Like you'd only need for 0.5% of moviefags to buy it just because they added the bluray to their Amazon cart and got it as a suggestion.

>Honestly he doesn't even need DC so they need to start treating him better or he'll leave.
He definitely doesn’t, and I think them extending New Superman past it’s initial cancellation was their way of trying to keep him. I love that book and I would welcome Yang on any other DC book.
>Marvel just does not have any evergreens, but I don't get why they haven't been able to force something into one by now.
Like it or not, I think Coates Panther will become that, and I think Civil War by Millar is already that.

Normies just watch mcu movies. Disney/Marvel has the general audience by the balls but they don't give a shit about comic books.

>like at least one at 20k+
He notes that
>At #6 we get something we haven’t seen for a long time: a Wonder Woman volume at the top with the first volume of the “Rebirth” era, “The Lies”, bringing in 16k copies – and there’s also a Barnes & Noble exclusive cover that sells an additional 4100 copies, while v2 does 11k (v3 sells about 4300 copies). Nearly 8k copies of “Her Greatest Battles” also charts, as well as a little less than 5k of the first volume of the “New 52” era: “Blood”
So the first Rebirth trade technically hit 20K

>I expected better from the WW stuff, like at least one at 20k+
Has she ever been a big seller? Flash has had a huge fucking breakout from the show. Nightwing is also selling really well. Wish Supes was selling more since I’ve loved the current run, but his string of mediocre to terrible movies makes that unsurprising.

>Seems like only existing fans bought trades last year with no real boost from the movie.

A lot of times, comics sales don't get much boost from the films. There's exceptions, though.

I guess that works then

With DC at least recently we've seen stuff jump up a lot even when the adaptions are bad. Like how TKJ was like 100k on the 2016 chart and a BvS collection broke 40k. Harley and Preacher too. I figured a good WW movie would cause more movement for her.

>So, yeah, that’s absolutely the worst Image has done with the BookScan reporters in six years, losing about half of their volume in the Top 750.

>Much of Image’s chart collapse is on the absolute freefall that has become “The Walking Dead” in 2017. “TWD” used to be Image’s huge juggernaut-like cash cow – just within last year’s Top 750, the 37 placing “TWD” titles sold more than a half-million copies for $17.5m dollars – but things have collapsed and this year the collective performance (on just 17 volumes) is down to just over 200k sold, for just $5.7m in sales. The best-selling “TWD” book is v27 at just over 36k, while v28 moves about 24k. But the real plummet is in the Compendium editions where volume 1 (#7) plunges down to under 19k sold, when it did 71k in the previous year, and hasn’t sold less than 60k in any of the last six years. Before you start shedding any tears for Kirkman and Adlard, don’t forget those compendia are reprints of reprints, and were (essentially) just “found money”, though this is a big potential cash flow crunch as they right-size inventory to adjust to the new reality.

Yikes, I had heard that Image had a bit of a rough year in singles sales (with no new mega-hit), but I had assumed that the bookstore market with continue to be very healthy.

Based DC

BvS was a bit of an anamoly, people were hyped as fuck for it to an insane amount. It being a failure damaged the DC brand as a whole. I don’t think people bought a bunch of SS trades right? And JL trades didn’t benefit at all.

>I don’t think people bought a bunch of SS trades right?
Well, maybe they did and it was regular readers that didn't show up after seeing the shitshow that was N52 SS, and underwhelming Rebirth SS.

rough day for Image

Yeah, the only SS-related trades on the top 750 are:
>Rebirth vol 1
>Justice League vs. SS

TWD is trash and has been for a while. Time to wrap it the fuck up Kirkman.

SS did have one break 20k in 2015, most of their boost was there

I guarantee the reason comics sales are falling off is because people are getting tired of the show

>This is the first year in the history of doing this survey that Dark Horse Comics has been out of the Top 10 (they were #8 last year) but they’re the strongest pub here in the “other” section, as they place 20 titles for 187k.

>Dark Horse’s #1 book of the year, for the third year running, is a “Plants Vs. Zombies” title. This year it is “Boom Boom Mushroom”, which sells about 22k (down from almost 29k copies last year). There are nine other volumes of “PvZ”, on the Top 750 BookScan this year. Together they sell 110k combined – more than half of Dark Horse’s placement – and $1.1m in sales.

>Dark Horse’s other big success in 2017 is the first volume of “The Legend of Korra”, “Turf Wars” which debuts to just over 19k copies. Dark Horse also continues to do well with comics based on “Avatar: The Last Airbender” which has five volumes place for just over 40k, total.

It's just my personal observation, but they seem to be having a hard time keeping Hellboy and B.P.R.D. stuff in stock lately. The Plague of Frogs TPB's have been out of stock for a few months now on Canadian amazon

This one hurts. Injustice is going to be poison for Supes and WW in the long run. It’s wildly successful and has made Supes and WW seem weak willed, not helped by that fucking retard Hack Snyder using it for DCEU Superman.

Agreed. The show is garbage and Kirkman was retarded enough to copy it in the comic. If he’s smart he’ll wrap it up before it totally sinks.

No Ostrander at all, meaning that the recent reprints have sold under the 4K threshold for being on the Top 750.
No wonder DC is dragging their heels on finishing that

Manga writers own their books so while Snyder, Bendis and Johns won't receive $3 millions. Toriyama, Isayama, Ishida Sui, Katsuhiro Otomo, Junji Ito and all the mangakas will get big numbers even with taxes and editorials.

>Who doesn’t have that book yet?
I ask this the same question whenever I see it in top selling graphic novels.

BPRD isn't as popular as Hellboy where they can just keep it in print forever, and where bookstores will just keep it in stock.

>Ostrander Under 4K
>Trash like Injustice selling 15k+
>Coates Panther selling a shit ton
>Priest Panther nowhere to be seen
All the newfags have godawful taste. We are swinging back towards eedgelord shit and readers have no one to blame but themselves.

a damn shame

Ehh, depends. I think with DC trades the royalties are paid if you sell above a certain level so Johns and Snyder might be doing fairly well even considering that. And Johns has his executive deal. But yeah, working on your own stuff would get you more.

Considering the TWD show started around 2010 that would explain the jump they had in the 10's. I assume that Image still operates smaller and differently than most companies would so it might not impact them too much, but I think they need another mega hit, otherwise they'd have to wait for Vaughn to get a Saga TV show off the ground or something.

>but I think they need another mega hit
Good luck with that. Only ones who stand a chance are Hickman, Lemire, and Remender. Kirkman has been mediocre as fuck for years.

It's more likely that BKV will hit big with yet another title than one of those 3 that you mentioned. Neither of them has that mainstream appeal.

doesn't need to be something good to catch on, strangest shit gets popular sometimes

>Kirkman has been mediocre as fuck for years.

If being non-mediocre was a factor in success the quality level on a lot of things in general would be a lot higher than it is now.

Movie makes a billion but the comic can't break top 20 in sales. Marvel being carried by normies.

BKV is in a league of his own. At risk of sounding like a newfag did he do much capeshit work besides Runaways? Because he seems to have gotten big purely off his indie work, while his capeshit work seems totally inconsequential to his success.

He did some mediocre Batman iirc.

Then yeah I’d rate him all by himself. Even Moore made his name doing capeshit first, no disrespect intended.

Huh
When Didio said Rebirth wasN'T selling as much as New 52 I was curious to see numbers

They didn't do so hot in 2017 so I can see them wanting to fix their 2018.

>Year / # of Titles / Unit Sales / Dollar sales
>2010 96 648,403 $12,523,128
>2011 107 660,706 $13,083,378
>2012 104 688,870 $14,811,979
>2013 130 767,686 $15,620,981
>2014 131 931,239 $19,207,755
>2015* 119 1,074,304 $21,701,088
>2016* 117 1,234,047 $23,203,071
>2017 101 827,544 $15,234,525

7 years of straight growth gone so I see why they want to butt in on the kids market more aggressively in 2018 and 2019. None of that "we have a TTG and Scooby doo book so if you find it you can get it" crap and more "BUY OUR SHIT".

This thread will die soon but thanks for having one good thread without companywar faggots and Sup Forums shitters Sup Forums.

He did Y:The Last Man (60 issues) and Swamp Thing over at Vertigo, though only the former is at least partly creator-owned. Y sold well and was critically acclaimed, but his Swampy was more controversial.
He also wrote Ex Machina (54 issues) at Wildstorm,

Whoops, meant to add that none of those are exactly capeshit, but are capeshit-adjacent, and were all published under DC imprints/banners.

What happened in 2014 that caused that leap?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_K._Vaughan#Bibliography

He's done some, yeah.
His Mystique was good but I've never read some of his other capeshit other than that and Runaways.

>not helped by that fucking retard Hack Snyder using it for DCEU Superman.
What are you on about, user

Maybe it's just an indicator of new people getting into comics? Since it's one of the first books the average person might buy. That gives it some extra momentum over time.

>but his string of mediocre to terrible movies makes that unsurprising.
Movie success or lack thereof, doesn’t affect comic sales. Just look at any Marvel comic.

Note that DCSHG is also sold through Scholastic book fairs and shit and that's data we don't have. It could be significant, though I imagine 2016 when it was new was probably still higher than 2017.

>827,544 units sold

>I am sure that no one is surprised that Batman is DC’s most lucrative property – about a third, thirty-two of the ninety-eight DC branded books are either directly Batman, or a member of his extended “family” (“Nightwing”, “Red Hood”, and so on), and account for 289k of DC’s sales.

>Batman franchise is 35% of DC's bookstore sales

I want to die lol

>How the fuck is TKJ still so fucking high? Who doesn’t have that book yet?

It (and Watchmen, to a lesser extent) are how teenage readers get into comics aimed at adults, since they're in school libraries, next to comics harder to find copies of or a bit too mature for teen readers (like Barefoot Gen and Maus, both of which where in my high school library back in the Forgotten Times)

What's surprising to me is how bad Manga does. My Hero Academia, the current hot shit, is at America Chavez numbers? That seems weird.

>Kinda funny reading all the bitching about the kid imprints from DC in light of this.

Only retards bitched about that. Those books clearly aren't for us but that doesn't mean they shouldn't exist

Jesus DC really does kick Marvels ass when it comes to trades

people really overstate manga's success

>Dark Horse is out of the top 10 but they're 31 with the shit house publishers who don't even deserved too get named

Time to pack it up Dark Horse

Ostrander did a ton of Star Wars comics.
His royalties on them are $0.00.

>>Batman franchise is 35% of DC's bookstore sales

Where have you been user? If you look at floppies Batman isn't just supporting DC but the entire industry

Always surprises me Nightwing sells so well in trades but DC doesn't do more with him compared to the characters he is selling around like Superman or Harley Quinn,

Why would they do more when he sells just fine and they can push their A listers and random B/C listers of the month instead?

I wouldn't mind more dick

these numbers are for 2017

Because there is a clear interest in his character that is not based off some movie or TV show, since he isn't in any of those, and you think they would want to try and foster and build up that market for him more and see if they can turn him into a bigger seller than he is.

But yeah, he sells better than DC probably expects him to so they are content with it and rather move their attention elsewhere.

My own tears user.

That might be true but then I’m shocked it’s outselling Batman: Year One. That’s the perfect starting point.
Ehh I’d agree somewhat. Flash has definitely benefited from the show though, his sales are only behind Batman. BP is fucking huge now thanks in part to the movie. However Iron Man And Cap haven’t really benefitted at all.

It’s because DC just promotes every decent Nightwing writer to Batman. Assuming the movie gets off the ground that might change.

It’s fucking insane. What happens if he ends up like Wolverine? But I don’t know if that even can happen, he’s got an enormous fanbase that eats up everything he’s in.

Killing Joke has Joker, Year One does not

That is what Dick's book has been forever. It is basically a stepping stone for creators that DC wants to test.

The Batman franchise is basically what the X-Men franchise used to be.

How is it that Joker is in fucking everything and yet people still aren’t sick of him yet? How many times can we have le edgy nihilistic clown before people got bored of him? I barely made it through Arkham Origins when he showed up and was fucking furious when he showed up in Knight.

Yep and it does the character a disservice, he could easily be an A-Lister if DC would just invest time and talent into him.

When did the X-Men fall from grace? Was it really just Bendis who sank them? It’s insane how badly they’ve fallen in popularity. I don’t think Batman stands a risk of suffering that fate though.

Why does everyone hate edgy shit

>What's surprising to me is how bad Manga does. My Hero Academia, the current hot shit, is at America Chavez numbers? That seems weird.

Did you even look at the chart? MHA v1 did 33k or even v9 at 18k, Chavez isn't even on this chart and comparing it to direct market numbers doesn't make sense because they have different price points and audiences.

Sup Forums really is filled with bakas.

They don’t, normies love it. Just look at the success of Injustice and how DKR/Watchmen are cultural icons.

Do you even know how the difference between monthly comic sales and book sales work?

>promotes every decent Nightwing writer
That explains Devin Grayson in reverse. She started on Titans and moved to Gotham Knights, then got saddled with Nightwing

She's a Nightwing fangirl so she like Waid probably begged to be put on his book but unlike Waid was not an A list writer, so they let her

so, comics economy's are dead or not?

bump

No. Just floppies. DC knows where the money is and Ink and Zoom are the smartest moves they've made in years

>Moore sells $3 million without doing anything
how does King make that much more than Lemire?

Because if you look at that chart, King had his first four volumes of Batman, and Batman/Flash: The Button (which just released last year in hardcover), and the two volumes of Vision.

Lemire only has Old Man Logan and Descender on the list.

Because Lemire isn't writing Batman

I'd argue the X-Men started their decline around the 00's with Fraction. But Bendis did accelerate it and everyone that came after didn't do a good enough job so sales got even worse, to the point where they hit the 30,000's. That's pretty fucking bad for a title that used to be 100,000 or more, in a time when doing 50,000 or more is a success.

I'd say the decline started after Morrison left and Austen got his grubby hands on it

Here's Hibbs' 2014 analysis:

>DC has yet another banner year during 2014 in the book stores, according to the BookScan reporters – that kind of growth is really exceptional, especially since DC’s transmedia in 2014 was mostly on lower-key Television (“Gotham”, “Flash”, “Arrow”, “Constantine”) rather than any theatrical driver – the big blips for DC (2008 & 2009) were largely a result of the sales of “Watchmen” around the movie adaptation’s release.

>DC continues to be the #1 publisher (west or east) with the BookScan reporters, and they continue to do that without a Top 20 hit in the overall BookScan list (their top-selling book, “Batman: The Killing Joke” is such while only being #27 overall) which shows a wide support for a large number of perennial books, a generally healthy position to be in.

>As just noted, their #1 selling book is a Batman comic; as is the majority of their top 10 as listed – #2 is “Dark Knight Returns”, #3 is the first volume of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s New 52 relaunch of Batman (“Court of Owls”), #4 is the second volume of same (“City of Owls”), #6 is “Batman: Year One”, #7 is “Hush” #10 is v3 of the new Batman (“Death of the Family”), #12 is “The Long Halloween”, #14 and #15 is more Snyder/Capullo (v4 “Zero Year” and “Death of the Family” in a hardcover format), and #16 as a tie-in to that (“Joker: Death of the Family”, which reprints the non-“Batman” bits of that storyline). People would seem to like this Batman fellow, especially when done by Snyder and Capullo.

>All told, fifty-four Batman or Batman-related titles place within the Top 750, clearly making it DC’s most popular franchise, and, the franchise with the most number of placing titles as well (“The Walking Dead” continues to sell more overall units, though) – with a massive eleven of those being Snyder / Capullo collections or repackagings.
