first season he was suppossed to be this general who lost his son and went soft
so he decided to exhile himself with zuko to get away from it all and ended up becoming a father figure for him while zuko is a replacement son figure
then later on turns out he was jesus and saved the last dragons and was part of the avatar iluminati or something
i think his original design and story was better, it made more sense, nobody born in the fire kingdom could be so perfect and i can buy into hiis wisdom if it is something he adquired through making mistakes rather than being born into it

I absolutely buy into iroh loving his son so much that losing him leads to rejecting the fire nation's values, he died in war after all and war is their fucking identity
