Very basic mythology of the Jizo statue: When children die they are told to stack stones in order to move on and reincarnate. However, demons will destroy the piles they make, so Jizo-Sama a saint figure protects the children. Travelers can give offerings of stones to these statues to help the children. Very basic understanding, maybe youtube-user can dig something more in depth up.
Let me guess, the sensei gave him fake seeds/pebbles to test his perseverance, trust or something. He knew it would not grow in the first place. Reminds me of a story/fable with a father and 3 sons. He knew 2 of them cheated cause they had crops.
Also the practice of placing Jizo statues is, like a lot of Japans customs, still commonly done today >youtu.be/HDp48S3TIR0 >youtu.be/VP4G1Wd_Xag ------------------------------ From mourning the ending of life we move to the beginning of the new as this last month has marked the begining of Cherry blossom season - a time to celebrate new life, and the chance to enjoy late nght parties to view the cherry blossoms [with the accompanying hangovers afterwards] >youtu.be/c77puBw4X0w NHK worlds english language program "japanology plus" covers more about this traditional practice: >youtu.be/3AtW82MhNeE

What is 'death' compared to running into Jei in the dead of night?
Whenever we see a character touching/scratching their face, they seem to almost always take their hand out of their sleeve and through their clothes. Why is that?

Best guess is a way to avoid your elbow bumping your swords. Don't wanna dishonor them blades just to rub you chin or scratch your nose.

You ever think the magistrates think Usagi is a secret psychopathic mass murderer with his body count?
"Oh dear. It seems I left another pile of bodies. I wonder how that happened?"

Poor Kimie. A peasant girl just can't compete with a ninja girl, a samurai girl, and a beyblade thief.

Yeah I've been wondering that too. Seems like it would be dangerous if you need to draw your sword quickly
