You can't sustain a national grid since the valence band of most materials isn't optimal for conducting electromagnetic energy. What people don't realise is power plants are already extremely efficient and could be a lot more efficient if energy companies were given enough motivation to reoutfit their plants. Few plants boast tech younger than the 1970s.
