I think that even if the economic argument was solid, it just wouldn't fly. Human nature is that people won't want to work if they know they can still live comfortably without lifting a finger. And the more comfy the minimum income, the more people choosing that way of life, the less people running the businesses to support it, and so on.
What of people who blew all their guaranteed income on alcohol and smoking? Such a socialist setup would have mitigations still for those who still seemed to struggle. They'd be given even more basic income. And round we go again..

I can't lurk in brit/pol/ cause it's not comfy. I don't know how many posts I wanted to make here, and how often I started writing a post before realising. I was off to Sup Forums, Sup Forums and /fit/ mainly.

Admit it, there's litterally no difference between the tories and labour
>Human nature is that people won't want to work if they know they can still live comfortably without lifting a finger Marx was right about one thing: Human nature is malleable.
People could get by comfortably working half the hours they do nowadays, but most don't. Some are engaged in system-justification, some are rampantly consumerist, but all take as gospel that their 40hr work week is reasonable.
Besides, I always emphasise that minimum income lets you obliterate employment regulations. You know the old Grand-Theft-Auto games where you press a button and start a taxi-driving job? Imagine real world employment being closer to that level of triviality than to the current process of resumes, interviews, etc.
Even if people were content to laze around most of the time, working at McDonalds, or cleaning the street or such, for a week or so with no strict regulations, a hiring policy that's essentially "walk up, get job" and a lump-sum payment at the end of it, would be a relatively easy action for any NEET to take. Unlike going from NEET to work today, it needn't be such a high-effort process.
>Such a socialist setup would have mitigations still for those who still seemed to struggle One could always rely on a mix of charity, work, and some kind of foodbank system that could absorb excess agricultural production/imports. (Pedantically, I've got to point out it isn't socialism at all - if anything it's the "last stage of capitalism" or such, because you're strongly trying to keep the means of production in private ownership instead of letting an unemployed mass get up to no good.)
I'll admit I'm open to the idea of a disability or old-age supplement to minimum income, though, since there's obviously a high chance that for working age people the expectation remains that you work say 4hr a week on average across the year, which would still add up in the end. That's my practical vision of the system in the "near" future.
Landon Jones

I'm not saying that is why they are doing it but they will have to get one or two just in case the public get suspicious. When they do that Brit/pol/ will go back to shilling for the tories.

>Marx was right about one thing: Human nature is malleable. Probably should have included the main reason I said this: Consumerism isn't an innate human state, it's something that people were taught by marketing men. People could be taught to always aspire to more. The press could (as it does now) manipulate public opinion to encourage taking at least some work. (Consider, for just an hour's work a month you get to say you're "Not a scrounger" in truth, of sorts.)
We then flow into how we could live the dream life of an 18th century miner working a minuscule number of hours, but we don't, and from there into the wider point again.
Josiah Turner

Yeah but its the right kind of government spending. Investing in infastructure is much better than giving trillions in foreign aid and to benefits scroungers.

Most people identify themselves as middle class. It's also useful to take that perspective because most of the precariat have such bloody weird employment arrangements that the number of hours is the least of their problems. Especially once you pile on the various cluster-fuck of subsidies, tax credits, etc the government currently throws out to keep employers happy.
For all I like the idea of flexibility in the future, nonsense like being notionally self-employed for Deliveroo is....err... Nonsense, like I said. Fuck that.

>we could save I mean let's be honest, even if we did we'd piss away 700m or such of it on administration costs.
I'm reminded of the Scottish story with prescription charges (which the Conservatives kekworthily still want to re-impose) where they prepared to budget for extra costs as a result of abolishing it, only to find they were paying as much in administration as they were earning in fees.
>They were crying about muh £350 million a week for the NHS Be fair, the contention was that it was a lie, not the figure itself. It's not that £350 million was particularly special, it's that it was misleading as hell.
