SURF

Lets talk about surfing, because fuck it.

>what is surfing?
In this context, surfing is a specific gamemode for Source engine games, namely the Counter Strike series, Team Fortress 2, and GMOD.

It involves sliding along sloped surfaces called ramps to get from one point to another, there are many different types of surf maps, each with their own unique goals.

>what's the point?
You can divide surf maps into two main categories, combat and skill. Combat maps involve players fighting against each other, and skill maps are just about getting from point A to point B. You can further divide maps into arena, linear, trick, etc, but that's less of a distinction.

>how does it work?
To surf, you slide along sloped surfaces. You gain speed by 'falling' to the bottom of the ramp, and jump by moving off the top. While surfing, you must strafe against the ramp using A and D only, pushing W or S will cause you to fall off/not gain speed.

>how do I get started?
There are tons of tutorial videos on youtube and other places, or you could just jump in a surf server. It's an easy skill to learn, but a hard one to master with an incredibly high skill ceiling. There are several surf communities, many with servers specifically for people just starting out.

I fucking never see you assholes discuss this most Based of gamemodes on Sup Forums, so lets change that. It's the most fun you can have in an FPS game, bar none.

Post your favorite/least favorite maps, discuss anecdotes, WR runs, which game is best to surf in, etc etc.

Surfing is cool but Icy Jumps is better.

Surfing more like Burfing because it's so gross it makes me throw up

Do you get motion sickness or something?

>you must strafe against the ramp using A and D only, pushing W or S will cause you to fall off/not gain speed.
If you can only sidestep I'd rather play a racing game so I can see where I'm going. Any vids OP?

Favorite map right now would probably be Telstar in TF2, because you can go fast and the shortcuts are neat, plus it's got a lot of content and a really good jail. Also writing shit on the banner thing to piss off the other team is A+.

Utopia is overrated and overplayed as fuck.

What the fuck happened to EGAN, and why did he/she/they stop making maps. Halloween, Torrent, even Overlook are all really good maps.

No I actually like surf I just saw the burf pun and had to do it

You're not sidestepping, you're sliding forward. Basically the strafing is holding you against the ramp, and you gain forward momentum by sliding along it.

Here is some super high level surfing on a super hard map:

Just to give you an idea of what is possible.

>surfing is a specific gamemode for Source engine games
stopped reading there
fucking delete your thread

Y tho?

wtf is going on in that video

surfing sure changed from the early days, sheesh.

Troflcopter is basically a robot.

I know it probably makes me a pleb, but I fucking love combat surf in TF2. Like, I'll hop on resurfed or whatever every once in a while, but combat surf is just so much fun. The constant high speed movement and action, the skill ceiling of surfing combined with the skill ceiling of the base game means you can get some crazy awesome shit happening like midair headshots at super high speeds or sweet twitch direct rocket hits.

Skill surf can be super comfy too, when it's not frustrating. Just pop on some music and fly through a good map. Surf maps are getting more and more well made and aesthetic as time goes on.

Does nobody on here surf anymore? I know there used to be a few people that do it, have had discussions in the past. I know it's a relatively obscure game mode, but damn.

defrag for babbies

Surfing and it's community were ruined by leafy autists.

this shit is beyond autistic

>Doesn't even know about 1.6

delete your thread underaged fuck

How so? It's pretty easy to learn, and you don't have to be a WR fag to surf.

I heard a lot about leafy for a while, but I think it's died down a bit. As long as it gets more interest into the game mode and keeps shit from completely dying, I'm cool with it.

I said 'Counter Strike series' you dumb fuck. It started in 1.6 (or arguably in quake), but more people play the other games these days.

Is that being done freestyle on reaction or is he just working on memorisation?

I remember someone from /agdg/ making a game like surfing where the direction in which you look at you retain momentum.

It's working on memorization, there's no way to do maps of that level free style. Some easier maps can be done on your first try though, and map design standards generally include "how easy is it to figure out where the fuck to go". If you have trouble with a map, you can always either spectate someone who knows it, look it up on youtube, or noclip through it on your own to find the proper route.

Some skill maps get incredibly fucking obtuse, especially the older ones. I've seen maps get around this by putting giant arrows, but generally on really good maps there's a "flow" that kind of directs you naturally through it.

As you get better at surfing, you'll also start to just instinctively know what to look out for, as certain 'tricks' or 'obstacles' get used by many different maps.

>memorization
Speedrun tier autism, then.

I'd love a game that's just about this mechanic. There is a Source mod called Kreedz Climbing which involved surfing, bunnyhopping, and 'climbing', but most of the maps are shit and the community is completely dead.

Somebody should start up a surf server in TF2 or something, it'd be fun to play it with a bunch of people from Sup Forums. Haven't done it in a while.

That instance is, but as I said here you don't have to be a speedrun fag to surf, there's different types of maps, including arena combat and stuff like that.

It's really rewarding to get good though, because you can do shit like in the video. There's nothing quite like it in any other game I've seen. The flying through the air, making it through tough obstacles and seeing the beautiful maps.

It'd probably just devolve to people arguing about map choices, mic spam, and furry sprays.

I would totally play on it if such a thing existed, but I can't see it ending well.

>It'd probably just devolve to people arguing about map choices, mic spam, and furry sprays.
But that's the best part!

>How so?
is this bait? how is it not immediately obvious? Taking a multiplayer FPS game and turning it into essentially a fucking track and field game where people stop fighting each other and instead try to break the game engine and abuse movement physics to slip and slide around like greased up children doesn't seem autistic to you? You're on the spectrum, and you don't even know it

Man I spent ages in CSS surf serversa
Machine2 was my jam, I was a god on that map and knew it in and out
>tfw going full speed through the whole map, picking up kills in passing until I'm kicked for 'hacking'
I miss it

Is this your first day on here
This doesn't even show up on the radar for autismal things

Try it. I'm not doing a great job at explaining it, but it's fun as fuck. I'll admit that some of the more dedicated surfers may be equivalent to autist speedrunners, but it's super easy and fairly casual to get into, and there are combat oriented arena surf maps if you're not into the skill surf side of things.

90% of my time playing CS anymore is surfing. it's just peaceful. it's like golf in my eyes, kinda. just you against the course

Are there any good tutorials for making surf maps?

You're essentially saying that having fun with a video game not immediately intended by the devs is retarded
And that's silly

It's the best man, I had something similar happen to me on TF2.

>playing on some shitty server as soldier
>getting tons of kills, coming at people from weird angles and bombing them, usually my rockets are going slower than I am
>pretty good at flick aiming and predicting trajectories to some degree
>get votebanned for aimbotting

I still don't see how they think I was aimbotting as a class that uses projectiles.

youtube.com/watch?v=IGjQZz7pQ1Q

There's a lot of other videos out there as well, also check the gamebanana forums.

Basically, ramps need to be less than 45 degree angles, otherwise you could just walk on them. Save/compile and test often, to make sure everything works and your map is actually possible.

Knowing your way around hammer in general is a must, surf can get fucking complicated as shit. I made a shitty map for CSS, and I have a project for TF2 on hiatus cause I'm a lazy cunt.

Don't overuse curved ramps, as that's where you'll get most of your glitches. Many maps use 99% straight ramps and only have a couple of curved ramps where needed. Maps that have a lot of curves like Omnific and Kitsune2 use props for the ramps, made in blender and imported.

Finally, hammer fucking sucks, if a vertice isn't on the grid, it's exact position won't be saved and it will shift slightly, but it's usually not enough to be a major problem.

good point

Would it be combat or skill though?

youtube.com/watch?v=8TXOmPR7uk4

Ok people, what game was the best for surfing? CSS or TF2.

CSS was always my go to for combat surf, I could play Surf_10x_reloaded the entire day and not get bored.

>allbright

Fucking why, makes good maps look bad, and bad maps look worse.

Had to stop watching at fucking akai, that combined with the rapping was just too much.

I prefer TF2 in general, just because of the variety. That and some of the TF2 specific maps are really fucking good. CSS or CSGO combat surf always seems too srs for me, and RPG servers get really old really fast unless you get in on a reset before everyone else is basically immortal.

should've post the best version
youtube.com/watch?v=sY6qHjo2LKk

I just posted the first one I saw. The fact that he beat the former record and then went back and beat his own record is unreal.

How the fuck is he so good? It doesn't seem physically possible. All we need now is for him to actually make maps himself.

youtube.com/watch?v=xkkU-4dUhgQ

This was one of my favourite fuck around maps for this shit. I spent more time on here than I'm willing to admit.

he actually streams on twitch sometimes. it's crazy watching him replay a map over and over and over and playing from the same checkpoints over and over and over hammering out a run just for that one final run where everything comes together

The amount of secrets on the final version of this map is just silly. The fucking avatar minigame alone astounds me, that he put that much time and effort into making something that most people that play the map probably won't even see.

>final version
Excuse me? They updated it?

I think there's a v2 or something, where the bonus has an actual ending.

Wasn't the v1 fairly bare? I don't remember it too well, because the updated version got played a shit ton on the main server I play on. Was basically 24/7 for a while, and it'll still be on for hours when it gets switched to that. I'd prefer that over fucking utopia any day.

But yeah, final version had powerups and shit on the main map, accuracy, a shield, other shit. When you finished the bonus you could go through a door and you'd be a giant with a big shield, ammo regen, and be basically immortal to anything but backstabs.

Time to fucking install TF2, there goes my weekend.

I don't like CSGO and CSS surf maps, they are way too fucking fancy looking, can't tell shit
In 1.6 it was all super clear

I haven't played 1.6, but I have seen surf_classics, and if that's in any way indicative of how older maps looked, then I'm glad they changed.

>he can't handle the aesthetic

surf_classics is legendary

surf_classics is objectively shit. The starting maps are overly simple, the middle ones are just stupid with un-needed ramps and shit everywhere, and some of the ending ones are okay, but not great.

Like, half the stages require no skill whatsoever, it's only tier 2 or whatever for the last 2 or 3 stages, and even that's pushing it. It's too easy and too ugly to be considered a good map.

it's not about the difficulty or the ramp glitches or whatever. it's just a legendary map because it's just a collection of old school surf maps. it's purely nostalgic

Your nostalgia doesn't make it not an objectively bad map.

Like, why deal with that bullshit when there are so many great maps out there? Maps with decent challenge, smooth ramps, good looks, etc? I just don't get why people play it aside from 'babbies first surf map'.

i like overgrowth too

Well, that's nice for you. I still hate classics, cause I always see it getting played in lieu of better maps.

I'd say this thread was not quite a failure, but not a success either. Maybe when I finish the maps I'm working on I can shill them here and there'll be more to discuss. Too tired for this shit right now.

what's your opinion on mesa

Combat surf was the shit. Too bad I sucked at it

They're good maps, but the crystals and displacements can get in the way. The TF2 version is pretty easy, haven't beaten any of the others.

>I haven't played 1.6

Faggot

Your opinions are pure shit

Just gotta keep at it brah, you can't get better if you don't get better.

I used to suck, but suddenly I didn't suck so bad, it was amazing. Every time I start to think I'm getting good someone that's actually good will join and wreck my shit though, so there's that.

Surfing has outgrown 1.6 brah, just deal with it. It's literally better in every way.

who /zts/ here?

who was
veegee surf or aus surf here?

kz and surf were the best

Someone should make a boku no pico themed surf map with a hidden porn room with images from the movies.
