There is a rather old layer of unbelief in the urban English working class, as I have found. They find the general premise of the messianic salvation in Christianity hard to believe, though are open to simpler deism or even animist notions.

Because Henry VIII and his advisors nationalized Catholicism in the 16th century and created 'The Church of England'. This was like the 'Luthern Church' in communist East Germany, in other words it wasn't a religion so much as a government department staffed by bureaucrats. This led to a situation were freemasonry was more exciting, and it replaced protestantism as a religion among the elite and middle ranking establishment. The ordinary people lost interest in religion years ago, as the Church of Englands essentially fake and uninspiring character was obvious. Apart from Islam, freemasonry is now the most popular religion in the UK.
Stiff upper lip attitude of brits. The world is too harsh to them, trying to fit God into that doesn't work.
It's an act they sell to Americans because they know redditors love the accent.

Then explain the lack of fervor for Catholicism in France. If anything, religious strife prolongs religious fervor, and that is why Americans are so much more religious than Europeans today.
I do agree however that national churches are just extensions of the ruling state and that is exactly why they exist rather than any supposed theological differences.
