nationalism, territory. everyone in the balkans wants to claim territory from other countries because they once historically had that territory or because they have people living in those territories (lots of serbs live in bosnia). it's just a clusterfuck of rivalries. the religion is just there to unite and divide, like being orthodox is an essential part of serbian identity. there's no such thing as a serbian muslim because that would make you a bosnian (or an orthodox bosnian would be a serbian)

The case for genocide is Srebrenica, which was the killings of military aged males for what they had done to surrounding Serbian villages. If the Serbs were """genocidal""" they would have killed the women and children too. It's a massacre at most.
