It became garbage after cocksucking swedes buffed Ottomans even more.
Mechanically speaking, positive tolerance of heatens/heretics is the same as secular state, and it's very easy to get.
It's a combination of nostalgia glasses and the fact that compared to games that focus on any one aspect (Vic2-Economy, CK2-Characters, Hoi3-War) it's a cookie cutter game with little depth.

It's not entirely accurate, and it's not a terrible game to be the first Paradox game. CK2 is a bit weird for a strategy game in that it has a lot of focus on individuals and your dynasty, rather than the state you run, and vicky 2's market system is fucking undecipherable.
I have 800hrs into it. Its well worth the money while on sale.

The problem I have with the game is the mana and lately they have been adding many shallow features rather than deep features.
Still EUIV with all DLC is much better than its was when it launched.

I'd suggest CK2 if you mostly want to have (((fun))). It has the best mods out of all Paradox games.
Should also have the option of having your country colonized by other cultures (for example, inviting Songhai warriors to your country), giving you the "diversity" boost, which increases technology.
Also, have other stability enhancing events, based on liberating divorce, free love, etc

You can play as Semien eu4 but you have to start as Ethiopia and then release it as vassal
Pretty fun and difficult, you're also the only Jewish country on the whole planet so conquering stuff always makes you kek
